Sweden, Finland, Norway and Denmark all possible for Celtic

947

Delighted for Aberdeen, winning away from home in Croatia is no mean feat for a Scottish club, but a 0-3 result, anywhere, is a special result.  None of the other 32 away teams could manage so much as a two goal win.

The Inverness defeat on their maiden European performance was pity, if not a surprise.  Winning your home game is regarded as the Cardinal Rule in Europe, but they have a puncher’s chance next week in Romania.  Score the opening goal and it’s anyone’s game.

Today’s draw for the Champions League 3rd round qualifier has the potential to get a bit tasty.  There are plenty of potential opponents from northern Europe with trips to Sweden, Finland, Norway and Denmark all possible, while Celtic are the only seed from northern Europe.  Hopefully Uefa, in their keenness for geographical neighbourliness, don’t feel the need to send us to Israel, Poland or Serbia.  If we take care of Stjarnan, of course.

For what it is worth I think a lot of those who contribute to the political debates are obviously more literate than others,…

Have to disagree there I’m afraid – more reminiscent of wee kids in a primary school playground …

MARC WARREN is ready to quit Twitter after the golf star was subjected to horrendous abuse by hate-filled bigots.

“The Rangers/Celtic thing raises its ugly head every single time. You get people saying, ‘I wanted you to win until I found out you are a hun,’ that sort of stuff.

“Don’t get me wrong, I’ve probably brought some of that stuff upon myself by putting a bit of banter on Twitter about Rangers or Celtic or whatever.

    ====================================

Nice of him to admit he’s a Hun. And nice of him to do the un-Hunlike thing and acknowledge some of the banter was instigated by himself.

He’s playing well, right up there at the halfway point.

I hope he goes all the way.

Then misses a three-footer to take the claret jug on Sunday. The Hun.

    ;))

  7. Some very good results for LOI this week. Dundalk got a good result away to Bate Borisov going down 2-1. Bate are regulars in the Champions League group stages.

UCD a university side who play in the second tier and advanced in the last round also went down 2-1 against Slovan Bratislava in the away tie. Goes to show that teams like these who are well into their season cannot be taken for granted.

    An update on Luke Donnelly.

Luke won’t be going on loan to Greenock Morton. Ronny wants to keep him at Celtic. Don’t think he will be traveling to Spain though, he’s picked up an injury. Hopefully nothing too serious.

Great to see my favourite player, the one and only Charlie Gallagher, being talked about. As was said yesterday, Charlie was a better passer of the ball than even Bobby Murdoch but, of course, Bobby is the finest all round player I have seen in the Hoops. Charlie couls strike a ball too.

*his shot in the ’65 final that spun of the bar and down for wee ten thirty was an exocet. And some said he and Bertie couldnae play in the same team

  11. Went to EIBAR on May 8th this year, watched them play ESPANYOL on a Friday night. Go every year in May with a few pals to watch LA LIGA GAMES, did Ath Bilbao on the Saturday night v Deportiva La Coruna in Ath Bilbao new stadium, but EIBAR was great.

Any CQN’s going to EIBAR will have a great time … I had my HOOPS on and could not buy a drink. Had my photo taken by the ‘famous Scotland The Brave’ murel and all the EIBAR fans cheered. It takes about an hour on the bus from Bilbao with all the stops, you arrive in the main square which is full of fans, they have a beer tent, music etc. in the square and pubs galore around the square, went in their pub with the lads and was made so welcome, the back of their team shirts says ‘ Escozia La Brava’.

The ground is up on a hill above the square, hundreds of steps and little streets up to the ground, but in certain areas they have put elavators to get you up the steep parts, handy when you have had to much hospitality.

The ground is very tight with 2 may be three temporary stands, but creates a great atmosphere, they lost 0-2 when I was there but played really well just nothing up front after selling their star man to Derby in the January window.

Great team, town, and people any Celtic fans going will talk about their experience I am sure for many weeks.

  12. I don’t know anything about Ernie except that he is perhaps not too keen on the SNP and probably has a fine selection of hacking jackets.

  13. Just been looking at the 1 st div odds, and am surprised to see the huns are odds on, Hibs are 9/4, free money imo, esp if they get off to a better start than last season, and I reckon they will.

Honestly can’t see lower league rejects and kids winning it, even with help from the cheats with the whistles and flegs.

  16. according to the orcs Warburton is the man not just changing things at sevco but changing the way everybody will think about football,

    he’s introduced double training sessions,

    A new 4-3-3 formation ( wow)

Players to pass to each other.

Why has a manger never done this before, it’s took a guy his whole 2 years in management to come up with these ‘off the planet ‘ ideas.

Welcome to 2015 orcs, everybody’s been doing these things for Years HH

  17. Posts- what would we do without them?

For starters, we wouldn’t have anything to hang the ole’ onion bag onto, or the crossbar!

Don’t think there’d be much money in making them as once you have a set of goals you’re not gonna replace them every season. Or would you?

Its not as if the Tartan Army at Wembley is a regular event!

Posts are boring but without them we wouldn’t have the beautiful game as we know it.

I see Izzaguire our international left back is taking the Parkhead internet whipping bhoy role temporarily vacated by Efe Ambrose, previously owned by exclusively by Georgios Samaras. Would that be the same guy that played and defended magnificently when we last qualified for the last sixteen in Europe, same guy that’s an auto pick for club and country. To me Emilio Izzaguire sometimes ‘isn’t where a full back should be’ and when he tracks back he’s under pressure, and quite frankly, puffed. This comes down to Ronny Deila and his singular tactic of pressing high up with both full backs, and definitely not down to Izzaguire’s defensive capabilities, which are what they are.

What does the cliché ‘we need cover for Izzy’ actually mean, in the eyes of the supporter. Does this mean Izzy just needs a rest or dropped, or what. The likelihood of Celtic finding and signing another left back, superior or equal to Izzaguire in the current worldwide dearth of Philip Lahm’s, is zero, and we’ll be much more likely to reshuffle with Fisher, Mulgrew, or even Tierney in domestic games.

Celtic even with the windfalls of CL football or the ‘impending sale’ VVD, I don’t reckon will spend the serious money required on an adequate full back that is certain to, be sidelined whilst the splendid wee Honduran and easily the best left back since Tom Boyd, is around Paradise.

  19. Well done the Dandy Dons. Good to see another Scots team doing well in Europe.

Agree with other posters with regards to the oul political discussions on here prior to the indy ref, most, not all, were discussed without recourse to name calling and school yard tantrums. However a couple of months prior to the ref a few contributors decided that they would bombard the blog with SNP Yes campaign ‘sound bites’ multiple times a day. This drew ‘retaliatory’ posts from those supporting the ‘ No’ camp – again in some instances multiple times a day. The whole thing turned quite nasty and the bitterness continues on the blog.

Yes I totally agree with ‘Celtic Fanzone’, the sheep have replaced sevco in the scottish top flite and we dont need them anymore, nobody misses them, the ‘old firm’ is dead in the water, we – everybody in the top flite – will prosper without them. They are history and I would like to think in time we will forget all about them, just like you would a bad dream. Cheerio, dont come back.
