Taking a pop at Celtic, vulnerable Heynckes

403

I’m not going to tell you it’s right to post tickets by Special Delivery, or pass on a £7 charge, because I know many would, if given the choice, opt to take their chance on regular mail, with a lower (or zero) charge. The value of Special Delivery only really kicks in when your tickets have yet to arrive but all your pals have theirs. Which isn’t going to happen to all of us.

What I will draw to your attention is the gleeful rush to print an inaccurate story that the club gave fans no option to collect tickets in person, thereby forcing them to pay a Special Delivery charge, running in one of the country’s newspapers of Record yesterday.

There are probably upwards of 100 decisions made by Celtic each week. While clearly the club get most right, they absolutely get some wrong and others remain open to debate. If you are going to have a pop, at least pick on something they’ve actually done, not something you are fantasising about.

Or seriously upgrade your fantasies. Having to write, “Earlier we wrongly reported there was no option to collect from Celtic Park but you can in fact pick up from the club ticket office” is just demeaning.

Jupp Heynckes (72) looks like getting the job of preparing Bayern Munich for the Celtic doubleheader. There’s little Heynckes doesn’t know about the game, but despite his successes, he’s always struck me as an unlucky manager.

He was the man who ended Real Madrid’s wilderness decades when in 1998 he won their first Champions League since 1966, but was sacked days later. He exacted revenge over Real when at Bayern in the 2012 Champions League semi-final, but blew the final in the Allianze on penalties to Chelsea.

That defeat did for him, although Bayern took most of the following season before announcing he would be replaced by Pep Guardiola in the summer of 2013. Heynckes duly destroyed Guardiola’s Barcelona on the way to winning another Champions League, before the door hit him on his bum on the way out.  Despite his glories, a vulnerability surrounds him.  This is a Champions League winner you can look in the eye and sack, apparently.

I hope that vulnerability remains for a few weeks yet.

NEW CQN PODCAST FROM CELTIC PARK ON SATURDAY

Kevin Graham is back with a new CQN Podcast from Saturday. He talks to supporters on the bus on the way to Parkhead, interviews John Paul Taylor outside the ground and captures the atmosphere and action inside the ground before getting some more supporters’ views on the bus home after an eventful afternoon at Celtic Park.

Apologies for a few sweary words in this podcast near the end.

  2. KT getting it for a ‘poor’ performance.

20 years old, getting played out of position – the opposit eof his natural left-side, against superior quality players than his own side.

    Criticism? Away, ride yerself.

WGS – did a glorious job for Celtic with the dros slef tby MON – CL participation and last 16 was miraculous, and also winning titles up against those cheating orange bastards.

Butr he’s stubborn wee ginger ninja – and tonight he got really, relaly luicky.

Scotland won in spite of his selection and subs.

It’s obvious CalMac is the player in form, with better experience and quality than Bannan or Morrison (both of whom were excellent, I must say).

But we scraped a deserved win, when deploying CalMac against ten men from the 20th minute would have ensured a more comfortable margin.

Played on a tightrope, got lucky. Unusually.

Now it’s cup final Sunday #1 for WGS’s Scotland.

Slovenia are much lesser quality than Slovakia – no Hamsik or Nemec to gild them. More Scotland’s level; i.e right there for the taking. IF we’re fearless enough. IF we play McGregor and take the game to them.

As for the Scotland v Celtic argument, I would opine it is a GOOD thing for Celtic if Scotland make Russia:

    Aside form Celtic receiveing a bundle of cash for participating players, it should be cautioned that Brendan Rodgers is not a stupid man;

the league will be wrapped up early-mid April, the WC players will receive their ‘close-season’ rest late April-early May, come back to take the Scottish Cup – and the World Cup itself will be used as a perfect pre-season for all participating Celtic players, tuning them up nicely at top-level for the immediacy of CL qualification matches.

Let’s be trealistic – Scotland, if qualified, ain’t making it out the groups, nor Sweden (Mick, for instance) nor Oz, etc.

We could have a full team there, competing, tuned-up, rerady to blast into the qualifiers mor ematch-fit than they ever have been; they can get their extra rest November, after a lead established in the SPL.

Think about it; win-win for Celtic coming up. ‘Mon Scotland; there’s no more Huns there to decry or boo our players, and the boys I know that follow other sides accept the Celtic contingent give Scotland a fighting chance; the days of a Hun core on the field or terracing are gone; just the offices to sort out.

Oh, and well done Poland for my LMS.

Those that backed England and squealed like stuck pigs or excited schoolgilrs at a One D gig, in the last minute need named and shamed… ;))

Was amused by Michael Stewart calling Jim McIntyre an Ayrshireman and favourite for the Kilmasonic job. When did Dumbarton become Ayrshire? :-)

*He scored against us during the TB era at Parkheid in a draw that possibly cost us the League, we drew 11 games and only lost 1 while deidco lost 3.

After scoring as he ran up the park he waved tae his mates up in the sand, cue for the irate Tims, eff off ya dob.

Big Pierre who finished top scorer in the country with 26 goals rescued a point for us in the 89th minute.

  4. Delaney,

I played against both Dumbarton Academy and Dumbarton St Pats. Two very good teams but St Pats had it by a country mile. McIntyre is a good young manager who fell foul of the inevitable that is associated with a team like RC. Lose your best players every year, try to restock and build a team, start again next year! Eventually, the process takes longer and you get the sack.

I hope he gets another chance.

Great Result last night, had a wee bit of trepidation when I saw the Team-sheet but apparently all equipped themselves well and got their just desserts.

Excellent, especially pleased for WGS and the Bhoys.

And Broonie, who may get a last pop at World Cup Qualification efter all… Looks like if we finish runner-up in the group, it’s a straight draw… that will be down to luck, they’ll be some very good teams in that Pot.

Still, Slovenia away First, now that’s a big ask.

  20. Out of position is always gonna be more difficult but defensively KT had a good game, can think of a number of blocks etc… that he made and runs he tracked when other older players switched off. He could easily have had a penalty, set up Griff for shoot that hit bar, rigtfooted cross put ball on griffs head and if he had wee nit more awareness a knockdown would have led to tap in.

AS at left back got more freedom to move forward but was defensively he was poor players ran off him lots and more that 60 % of his crosses hot the first man, not something we see fron KT at right back never mind left back.

KT awareness offensively and defensively is better than just about anyone on the pitch

He had the ML role yesterday and done it well, he was in team that did not loss a goal and got best result at this level for years.

KT gets pass marks cause the bhoy is different class.

  21. BMCUWP,

Will we qualify? Hope so, but…………it’s the hope that kills ye, eh!
