Taking the foot off the pedal talk

1410

The count of how many times I’ve heard “I hope we don’t take the foot off the pedal like we did last year” has reached double figures. This is never a good sign. Football games, against any level of opponent, need to planned for and respected.

During last season’s League Cup semi-final, Celtic went two goals up early on, then made 100% sure the result would never be in danger by denying Newco even an attempt at goal (the match stats recorded one attempt, which was actually a wayward cross from a free kick). Compare and contrast with Borussia Dortmund’s two goal advantages last night. While I’d love to score a barrel-load, winning the game is all that really matters.

We have seen enough Celtic teams dominate possession in Europe against less-resourced teams only to lose to the sucker punch. This has been a harsh lesson, which I hope has been learned.

I doubt many of us know what to expect from Newco. They won the Championship but this season didn’t have to contend with vastly superior Hearts team. They are also in the semi-final because they thumped Premiership Dundee 4-0 at Ibrox, which is a huge result for any lower league team (we’ve failed to score twice against Dundee recently).

All my “Rangers” supporting pals tell me they are hopeless at defending, so there’s a decent possibility they will defend deeply and play on the break – just as several others have done effectively against us this season. We’re going to have a lot of possession in the final third, but Scott Brown and Nir Bitton will need to offer a lot of defensive cover.

Most of all, we’ll need discipline. There’s a red card winging its way to the first Celtic player to stare at an opponent in a rash manner. The First Minister will probably get involved too, so be prepared.

Did you read Walter “dare I say it, 10 in a row” Smith? What a man to have in your corner days before a big game. He’ll have them thinking it’s 1957 all over again!

    its not the money they invested ( which has already been taxed) that Hector is after..

    Its the declared loss on that investment that they used to offset subsequent tax liability. Had it been a genuine investment that had incurred unforseen loss I think that would be ok. However those indulging in this scheme did so in the full expectation that the films would flop and therefore provide opportunity for tax relief.

    Basically a wideo move exposed. I don’t care who did it – they need to be punished for abusing the tax system that other honest citizens contribute to.

    Nothing wrong with your brain mate. These schemes are set up to be as convoluted as possible in order to disguise their true purpose – dodge tax.

  3. WEEMINGER on 15TH APRIL 2016 2:35 PM

    Are these schemes something like this?

    1) You’ve got £500k to invest

    2) You invest £100k in once scheme;

    3) You invest £400k in another scheme;

    4) Scheme 1 makes a £400k loss for you (deliberately) and closes you’ve lost your £100k;

    5) Scheme 2 makes a 400k profit and you take it and your investement back out.

    6) You offset the loss against the profit resulting in no tax being paid on the profit.

    7) You now have £700k with no tax owing.

    Is that it?

    I think it would be very very unusual for a football player to have his ‘salary’ paid to a Ltd company, the player is an employee of the club, in the scenario you mention he would be an employee of his own Ltd company. I don’t doubt many players have Ltd company’s or other arrangements for other income but I would doubt any British based player has his ‘salary’ paid to a Ltd company… but if you know of some I take it all back :-)

    Don’t recall such an article from the dr when the bhuns were liquidated ….. Generally speaking, I have no sympathy at all for anyone avoiding paying tax to ‘protect’ huge fortunes …… If everyone paid their due taxes, the rate might not be as high for the rest of us …. I am also confident that, although individual players may have invested their salaries unwisely / greedily, I am confident CFC will not have anything to answer to here…… I’ll bet Ming, Walturd and the Loaf will be crapping themselves, though …. And most of the other Sevco directors ……why ? … Because there will be less money for thr loan pay-back pot once they all have the taxman at the door of the big hoose again ……….. HECTOR, YOU ARE A LEGEND . hahahahahahaha

    Your salary gets paid to a Ltd company and then you get paid in dividends.

    I think the tax paid on dividends is 18%.

    Better than basic and higher rate taxes.

    Yes many ways to benefit from a Ltd company but that’s not my point..one of my points would be, I pretty sure there are no third party arrangements allowed in British football, having a Ltd between you and the club would be a third party arrangement..

    Well, firstly, I’m talking about high earners here. If the contract is big enough then I’m pretty sure their agent would advise them to seek accountancy advice, and an accountant would suggest the most tax efficient way to set up. As an example. most of the high earners have an image rights company which they own – much of of their income is via that vehicle and disbursed to the footballer in various ways (salary, dividends, benefits-in-kind).

    Secondly, I am not stating that the football club pays a Salary into his Ltd. co. The football club pays an invoice for services rendered. The footballer and his accountant decide how he is remunerated.

    In the Rangers case it was a different approach. Murray set up a scheme that utilised EBTs and their high-earners went through that. They were paid some salary and the rest via EBT.

    All you Bhoys who are asking Tommy G to be stripped on Sunday in case we get a penalty have surely been drinking. Celtic getting a penalty against the Rangers I have more chance of winning the lottery and I dont buy a ticket than the hoops getting a penalty. H.H.
