Tanks on the lawns of Uefa

The premier business paper where Uefa is headquartered in Nyon, Tribune de Geneve, today ran an advert, paid for by public subscription, questioning the governance of Scottish football.

IMG_0729

The advert asked readers to reference The Offshore Game report: Doing SFA for Fair Play and explained some of the issues governance, accountability and oversight in Scottish football.  It reads:

“A report by The Offshore Game (TOG), an arm of The Tax Justice Network (TJN), has highlighted examples of poor SFA governance in respect of:

• A Commission established in 2012 by the Scottish Premier League to investigate the use of employee benefit trusts to reduce the tax paid to HMRC by an SFA member club where the SFA provided key testimony which is now being questioned.

• The processing of a UEFA Licence in 2011 by The SFA when Court Officers called to collect overdue tax from a member club between Champions League and Europa League qualifying games. Proving there were no overdue and unpaid taxes was a condition of granting then retaining a licence to compete in both UEFA competitions. The tax concerned was never paid!

• The SFA have neither commented on the TJN report nor attempted to address the issues it raises. The TJN has called for an independent review of the SFA to make it more accountable.

• A group of shareholders of Celtic PLC acting in terms of Resolution 12 of the Celtic PLC AGM of 2013, have been pressing the SFA for over two years for a satisfactory explanation of their administration of the UEFA licensing process in 2011. In the absence of any meaningful reply they have now taken up the case with the UEFA Club Financial Control Body.

The TOG report highlights the financial cost over a decade to the British Taxpayer in Millions of pounds. The cost to Scottish football in terms of the loss of trust placed in the SFA to govern the Scottish game with integrity is incalculable.

Football fans everywhere are invited to read this important report into the game in Scotland.”

Our game suffers from a perceived lack of oversight, accountability and governance; fundamental requirements in modern sport which have been painfully lacking across world football for decades.  Uefa now have an opportunity to measure where Scottish football, and their own processes, are on these metrics.

Do you think that supporters who go, watch and support their team should listen to views on the team from those who do not watch the team. ?

    General question.

An overdue payable….damn it Stuart can we not just blame UEFA or Craig Whyte?

Everyone – keep the faith. Seems, from WC and James Forrest comments that even more is afoot than we imagine.

Seriously though UEFA took rRangers word for it that there was no overdue payable or UEFA didn’t see it as overdue or did and allowed them to proceed?

And the SFA washed their hands of it from March 30th? You are having a giraffe. What other e-mails do we have up our sleeve?

    Just read James Forrest’s article.

I think that the SFA are the ones who need to be dealt with as Res12 is trying to do. Rangers died as a result of their crimes and that’s pretty much as bad things can get for a club.

The problem for Scottish football is that although we all know it is corrupt and run by a bunch of incompetent cronies cheered on by the stupid, cowardly f**k-wits in the press, it is all to easy for them to just keep on ignoring this. The only hope is that the criminal courts and Uefa do something but can we really believe that these institutions are willing to rock the boat. Uefa has many skeletons in the closet and the SFA has many henchmen placed in strategic places within the European game even though some have been proven to be wholly inappropriate appointments, like the bigoted Hugh Dallas and the world’s greatest administrator of dodgy tax schemes, Campbell Ogilvie. The courts have a great record of not dealing with abuses of power.

My old man is 86, followed the bhoys home and away for the majority of his lifetime and for the last 7/8 years has no been fit enough to go “watch the team”, are you asking if I should give his opinion of the play he gets to watch on the telly less credence that yours because you managed to get to the game ?

Are you suggesting my old man is any less a Celtic supporter or qualified than you to have an option, because you and those you call real Celtic supporters can attend games ?

Really, really, because that’s what you are saying in you own inimitable arrogance. Backtracking now will look weak so stick to your guns and make exclusions, open to all that can afford and are fit enough to attend, aye very good, a real inclusive dude.

I see your point. It’s a very valid one, at that.

However, ‘they’ are in a boat which is getting smaller. That boat has more and more folks jumping on. That boat is always going to rock and hopefully it’ll tip and the dirt will end up in the water… not only to be cleaned, but to be absofuckinglutely exposed as the main poisons of all ‘this’ (not just scottish football) toxic corruption which has affected so many while hiding behing the brotherhood!

Disappointed to see flak directed at Winning Captains. He, and Los Cuatros Heroes, are deserving only of our utmost appreciation and admiration for their efforts on our behalf.

Any minor points can be dealt with by email or, better still, after EUFA has adjudicated.

If we have waited four years surely a few days longer is not a big ask.

If the Board does not do its part then each and everyone of them can expect a right hard time at AGM and a failure to sell season tickets in the future.

CQNers living abroad might consider using points from the advert to write letters to local newspapers in the relevant language on the general topic of “Governance in Sport”. This might be of special interest in USA where there is a focus on corruption in sport at present. HH
