Tax cheats and self-serving Help

673

Well, at least we don’t live in Spain, where tax fraud convicts are lauded like some sort of distorted victim if they have a connection to football. No one really expected Leonel Messi to go to prison, accountability in Spain isn’t that exacting, but he will have to live with a conviction for defrauding the tax system of millions of euros. A shameful act for one so wealthy.

I’ve always been a bit uncomfortable at the politicisation (from all sides) of the poppy and charities like Help for Heroes. Society has been poor at looking after its literal cannon fodder in the 100 years since the Somme, but flag wavers around these parts have imposed political sentiment on these charities which doesn’t exist elsewhere in the UK.

Four years on from the infamous Rangers-Milan legends supposed charity match, James Doleman’s article yesterday, on the unauthorised use of Help for Heroes logos on t-shirts, gives us more to ponder. It’s impossible to damage a brand which is already at junk value, but activity like this makes it difficult for all good causes to make their appeals.

Moussa played well , strong & pacey with good touch – very visible and available.

Maybe trying too hard and needing a bit of match sharpness.

With 2 goals and some great link up play His strike partner bould Griff was the star man!

We have a great potential pairing and really looking forward to next game v Maribor on Saturday

  2. Corkcelt @ 10:22…

Dembele ? On the basis of 60 minutes, he does have pace and looks strong. Definitely looks promising.

Maybe not at his best when playing with his back to goal.

He is only 19 and I and I think he will flourish at Celtic Park.

  3. So does the transfer deadline on Friday only apply for our first CL game ?

If we progress from that can we sign players for the Next round ?

If we can I don’t think there be any rush to bring players in, we should have enough to beat the team from gilbralter

Good, interesting post. Always liked the fact lots of native Scots followed or liked Celtic as well as the ethnic Irish Scots. We have a mission statement to be proud of and uphold.

As for our history? Keep in mind the mass migration of Irish to Scotland in the 19th Century during a relatively short period. If my memory is correct from reading the subject, Glasgow had as few as 50 Catholics late 1700’s? and as many as 60 anti Catholic organisations ( Glasgow: The Uneasy Peace – Tom Gallagher).

The impact of the Irish famine?

According to the census of population, the Irish-born population of Scotland stood at 126,321 out of a total of 2,620,184 in 1841, or 4.8%. Ten years later it stood at 207,367, or 7.2%, out of a total of 2,888,742. This compared to 2.9% for England and Wales. During 1848, the average weekly inflow of Irish into Glasgow was estimated at over 1000, and the figure for January to April of that year was put at 42,860.

Between 1841 and 1851 the Irish population of Scotland increased by 90%. As the century progressed the numbers of Irish immigrants dwindled to 3.7% in 1911, or 174,715; the respective figures for England and Wales were 1%, or 395,325. The census figures, however, underestimate the total strength of the Irish community in Scotland as they record only those people who were Irish-born; children of Irish immigrants born in Scotland were classified as Scottish.

In the 21st Century hopefully we represent in a sporting and charitable context what’s best from Ireland, Scotland, England, USA et al

Weird why neither Portugal or Wales played in their own red strip

    ————

Something to do with Portugal being the “home” team. Their home shirt clashed with Wales home and away shirts so Wales had to change.

Obviously UEFA have nothing better to do!

We should have enough to qualify without any additions, but I would be much more hopeful if we invested in a feck off CB and a quality middy.

Same , I’m sure Rodgers be hoping to bring in least another 2 of his own players,

  8. Poor game made bizarre by both teams wearing terrible away kits. A product of kits seen as fashion items and not for the function they are needed for.

Modern football. Can love and loathe it in equal measure.

  9. Dembele looked very impressive. Strong, pacy, good link up, can hold the ball up and go in behind.

    Ticks all the boxes.

You could see he was behind the group in terms of fitness and match sharpness, will quickly pick that up at his age.

  10. Thanks bhoys for responses re Dembele. Big and fast are attributes I really like in a forward. Hope the Bhoy becomes a legend.

  11. Brendan Rodgers was excited by his first viewing of the Leigh Griffiths and Moussa Dembele strike partnership.

Griffiths scored twice in the 2-1 win over Olimpija Ljubljana- playing alongside Dembele for 63 minutes before the former Fulham striker was substituted by Nadir Ciftci.

It was the third match of Celtic’s pre-season trip to Slovenia with Rodgers using his substitutes in the 63rd and 74th minutes as he pushed his players with extra game time.

Griffiths opened the scoring in the 27th minute then doubled Celtic’s advantage 11 minutes into the second half before Miha Zajc’s pulled a goal back shortly afterwards.

After the match it was the strike partnership of Griffiths and Dembele that earned the praise of the Celtic boss.

“It was a great workout for us,” Rodgers said. “Leigh Griffiths’ two goals were outstanding and he worked very hard. We also created other chances.

“This is only his (Moussa’s) first week training since coming in and he looked very strong, fast and mobile.

“You could see that combination up there with Leigh Griffiths. I thought he did very well and obviously tired a little.”

Rodgers added: “We are just trying to get the players up the 90-min mark. Difficult to come in and go straight into 90 min.

“In our last game, a lot of players had 45min, then got players up to 60-70min tonight, will need to manage it again at weekend.”

Stefan Johansen played for the opening 74 minutes despite being linked with a move to Galatasaray.

a quote about Dembele from the Evening Times report of the game

“…and for someone who will only turn 20 next week has the build of a man”

eh, might that be because he is one?

  15. Never saw any of the game but seen the goals. Trying my best to ignore friendlies.

They are for fitness only and with the new Manager they take a more experimental and exam like shape.

    Players being tested and assessed.

Real stuff is the only time to judge.

  16. Hunderbirds are Gone on

Well the pilgrimage to Estadio Naçional (Or Estadio Honra, as we call it in Portugal ;)) went well.

Took the train from Central Lisbon to Cruz Quebrada. Nice 15 minute train ride, along the coast, costs about €3.20 for a return.

Then about a 15 minute walk, uphill, to the stadium.

There was a tv crew outside filming with some people, no idea what for. Me and Mrs H, walked past them and up to the perimeter fence at the open end of the Stadium. I tried a few gates, but all locked, although the view into the pitch, and terracing (now seating) was good from here.

There were about four or five groundstaff, cutting and watering the grass playing surface, which looked immaculate, and one runner pounding around the running track.

We took a few photos, and I was happy to have seen it all first hand and close up. Just as we were getting ready to leave, a young couple approached the perimeter fence, and peered in. I heard the girl talk in English and asked were they Sellick supporters. They were. She was born up north and he was originally from Dublin, but they both now lived in Glasgow.

We were just chatting to them, when a guy approached us from inside. He had a kind of knowing look, and asked were we from Scotland. “Yes”.was the reply. He pointed to our right and told us there was another approach, with an open gate, and we could come in. The four of us walked away and found the other approach. Just as we were nearing the other gate a uniformed security dude appeared from a building to our right and challenged us, but at that point the original guy from the ground appeared and told the guard to stand down, the security guard relaxed and smiled at us “Celtic?”, we all nodded. The original guy was leaving, but told us to go in and take as long as we liked to get photos etc, but not to go on the grass.

So I got some great images, and at least touched the grass. It felt quite emotional, as I plotted out bits from the game that I have watched over and over.

It was a lovely sunny day and 25c, so not as unbearable as the day before.

We took the train back in to central Lisbon, and rounded off a great day with a few Al Fresco beers, in a nice terrace, outside a wee bar :)))

    Great chat buddy.

It never ceases to amaze me how the groundstaff and security staff there are so welcoming and helpful.

  18. Thought Broony and Biton were excellent tonight in the first 60 mins.Dembele looks the real deal. When fit he will take some stopping up front with LG.Two great goals from his magic left foot.Great workout against a very skillful team, especially up front.Efe did well considering.

Watched the Wales game.Joe Allen 16 million.Aye right.I cannot see why so many are desperate to sign him.

Looks a good tradesman, nothing else.Christie,Henderson,Allan, could probably do what he would do for us,maybe even the boy Ajer. Not for me.

Ronaldos header at the first goal was a thing of beauty. The leap and hang were outstanding.

It looks like Leigh is Loving the fitba at the moment. Celtic has been very good for Leigh, especially Ronny D, and I can see Leigh becoming an Increddible player @ Celtic. That finishing is a Gift from God.

He might not be a product of the Celtic System but I reckon Leigh will want to stay @ Celtic for many years. The guy is Loved by the Support and there is so much more to come, IMO.

  22. Have to agree with Turkeybhoy re Joe Allen. Difficult to see what the fuss is about. His poor pass in last game cost Wales a goal and later cost Ramsey a booking. Ramsey was one player Wales could not afford to do without.

A CH is needed now.Toure on loan would be ideal. No way have I given up on Simunovic. When fit,the boy deserves his chance. No way am I going with the “Sick note”crap that so many like to label players with.

If we play as I think we will, with three up front, including Paddy, that would leave 3 places in midfield.Who would drop out to allow a new signing to play?.Who could we bring in within our price range better than what we have.
