Teach them how to win the league with style and within budget

1046

I wasn’t at the 4-2 game against Oldco on 21 May 1979, when “10 men won the league, tra-la-la-la-la.”  Martin42 is still dealing with the consequences of going without me, but I endured the 0-3 defeat 20 years later that saw the title go to Ibrox.

In the intervening 19 years the authorities in Scotland have done their best to ensure we do not have a potential league winning game between Celtic and either of the Rangers group of clubs, but here we are.  There may never be another opportunity.

That Celtic team in season 1998-99 started poorly with new manager, Jo Venglos, working among one or two strong personalities in the dressing room, but by the springtime we were flowing and a title challenge was on.  When we met Newco on 2 May, a win would only give us an outside chance of the title.

Then came the news that we would play with a rookie, Scott Marshall.  The result wasn’t Scott’s fault, but the chance added a pressure to a defence which already had Stephane Mahe, for some of the game, anyway.  We could not handle the pressure.  Oldco stuck to task and won comfortably.

This was a time when titles in Scotland were decided by sheer brute force.  David Murray’s Rangers’ aggregate income for the four seasons which followed Celtic’s title win in 1998 was £180m – but they spent £282m, an average loss per season over four years of £25m.

The Rangers way of doing business was working.  It delivered titles and denied you and me football success.  There were many reasons to dislike how they did business.  Liquidation would take another 13 years, but the consequences of financial irresponsibility were always inevitable.

Newco will walk into Celtic Park on Sunday with their own version of Scott Marshall, Jak Alnwick, who has made just two senior appearances (no clean sheets) since arriving in Glasgow 18 months ago.  We need to make sure he endures a torrid afternoon.

After watching Graeme Murty earn two draws at Celtic Park I have a bit of respect for what he can do there.  He should not be underestimated, few managers arrive for their third visit undefeated, but the man is so embattled right now, his ability to prepare a team must be significantly impaired.

By contrast, Brendan Rodgers gave a tactical masterclass in the recent games at Ibrox and Hampden, costing Murty any chance of securing the Newco manager’s job long term.  For Brendan, Sunday is all about getting the job done as early as possible, before preparing the squad for the cup final, which is only three weeks away.

I know it’s greedy to ask for too much when we are within touching distance of a second successive treble, considering we only won two in 48 years before last season, but I really want this one.  Let’s do it for everyone who was at Celtic Park on 2 May 1999, or who lived through the years when David Murray and Dave King sat on an Oldco board which lost £35.3m with a turnover of only £44.8m.  Contemporary times show that some lessons cannot be taught too often to those who refuse to learn.

The same people are strutting around our game with the same sense of entitlement.  Show them how to win the league with style and within budget, Celtic.

Raffle to play in an 11-a-side game at Celtic Park, closes 15:00 today, Friday 27th

An incredible opportunity to play on the hallowed turf at Celtic Park around the end of the current season 2017-18, in Club sponsor Intelligent Car Leasing’s match.

You will be provided with complimentary Celtic kit and receive the full match-day experience including arrival through the front door, access to the dressing room and proudly walking down the tunnel to enter the famous field of play.

Both squads will be managed by a former Celtic player. Date 16 May, 11:00 kick off. All monies raised will be donated to Celtic FC Foundation, a registered Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (number SC024648).

How many stolen trophies has the Compliance Officer stripped the day then ?

Once a mug, always a mug!

    =========================

Its a good sound bite attention grabber but stripping titles is not the job of the Compliance Officer. His job is to investigate if the UEFA License to Rangers was granted and monitored properly in 2011 by the SFA.

There are two posts on SFM in response to questions from a guy who has persistently argued over since 2013 that there was no overdue payable to HMRC at 31st March 2011 and that if porkies were told in September then Rangers would not be sanctioned until the next season.

Under the rules that is the case as long as the rules were honestly kept to in 2011. That is the background to what follows in response to The Lawman aka Jas Boyd.

You have provided the opportunity to remind folk what Res12 asked and I’m reposting my responses on SFM for those who have forgotten.

“The Giannina case was responsible for focusing on 31st March as key rather than 30 June. Awareness of that came about in June 2016 at same time UEFA (Traverso) confirmed UEFA jurisprudence meant any sanction would have applied the next season had RFC not been liquidated. In that sense Res12 lost its initial locus based on Celtic taking RFC’s place as result of porkies in June 2011”____________________________________________________________________________

This was the question i put to you earlier though it may be in moderation.

I wrote about this in May and June 2016 prior to any confirmation by UEFA and qualified it by speaking with 2 different Football Associations and the Head of Legal at the ECA.

It was clear to me from all cases, precedents and the rules that the June date was a complete red herring in relation to Rangers playing in Europe that season and i formed that opinion purely on self found material.

Back then, i also stated that i was surprised that tens of thousands had been spent by the Res 12 guys on legal advice and that the legal team failed to spot what was very obvious to an untrained legal eye, with an attention to detail.

I think its important here to take stock and confirm that the narrative in March 2016 from the Offshore Report, Res 12 and their legal team was 100% wrong in relation to the June 2011 disclosure.

The above para is an admission of this fact.

    ============================

    Auldheid’s response

Res 12 wasn’t about whether RFC should have been ejected from UEFA CL in 2011 because of the monitoring submission of June 2012.

This is from preparation Notes in Dec 2013 after Res12 adjourned

Celtic AGM 2013 Resolution 12 Follow Up Meeting Preparation. (created 28 Dec 2013)

    ” As a reminder Resolution 12 said

“This AGM requests the Board exercise the provision contained in the Procedural Rules Governing the UEFA Club Financial Control Body Article 10 with jurisdiction and investigation responsibilities identified in articles 3 & 11 (Note 1 ), by referring /bringing to the attention of the UEFA Club Financial Control Body (CFCB), the licensing administration practices of the Scottish Football Association (SFA), requesting the CFCB undertake a review and investigate the SFA’s implementation of UEFA & SFA license compliance requirements, with regard to qualification, administration and granting of licenses to compete in football competitions under both SFA and UEFA jurisdiction, since the implementation of the Club Licensing and Financial Fair Play Regulations of 2010. “

The words in bold embody the intent of Resolution 12 which was to establish if the SFA carried out their responsibilities properly in the granting and subsequent monitoring of a UEFA Licence in 2011 to the SPL title winners according to the requirements set out in Articles 50, 66 and 67 of the UEFA Financial Fair Play regulations introduced in October 2010. Focus was on the 2011 licence when it became obvious that the title winners had an unpaid tax bill of circa £2.8M in August 2011 and as runners up Celtic shareholders had cause to question the application of the rules.”

    ———————————————————

Think of the 30th June submission which misrepresented the status of the tax bill as the loose thread that has led to current SFA investigation.

There was other evidence of misrepresentation at March and September and it WAS understood that UEFA sanctions would normally apply in subsequent years, but the thought at the time in 2013 was that if UEFA knew in good time of misrepresentations/maladministration they would use the power their rules gave to eject a club.

It was the SFA’s job, whom Res12 is clearly aimed at (no mention of RFC in it) to provide timeous information to UEFA and that is what the Comp Off should be investigating (as well as the 3 misrepresentations) as failure to do so allowed a licence to be granted.

In a way it is irrelevant whether an overdue payable existed at any time, that is just the means to the end of making the SFA accountable for their decisions in 2011, and getting caught up in the minutiae of rules interpretation of overdue payables iro Rangers submission is the kind of diversion you seem to enjoy.

What is relevant is did the SFA do the job they were charged with as licensor and that naturally requires looking at what the SFA were told by the licensee (Rangers FC).

I have no problem whatsoever in admitting you were correct on when UEFA would take sanctions under their rules, but as I think I posted earlier, those rules depend on trust and Res12 proceeded to ask questions based on the evidence that the Compliance Officer now has in abundance that trust had been broken (and specific UEFA rules on honesty breached).

I suggest we wait until the Compliance Officer reports to find out if it was rather than debate the minutiae of agreed terms etc. which Bogs Dollox has already opined and for which there is clear support for in letters of 23 Feb and 20th May 2011 from HMRC that show the calculation of sums owed were based on PAYE terms back then and not on the bill that was finally served to Rangers on 20th May 2011.

I could post links to both HMRC letters but as I said they are as irrelevant to what Res12 asked as when UEFA would sanction.

    This was followed up with.

    TheLawMan2April 25, 2018 at 10:31 (Edit)

See my reply to you earlier.

The position was fluid because the information on which a position was initially held changed as result of new information being supplied. Pretty normal behaviour.

One part of that new information in June 2016 from UEFA was in effect a correction of what Regan had said in 2013 re SFA responsibilities regarding when their role in granting ended.

That was significant apart from what the UEFA correction itself said about Regan’s competency or honesty.

The Giannina case was new information, there was always doubt from the start about the 2011 Interim Accs statement, but nothing until Giannina in 2016 to suggest that when a club admitted they owed money to their tax authority before 31st December they had from then to 31st March to stop it becoming an overdue payable under UEFA rules which afforded that possibility.

There was also the matter of fraud mentioned by HMRC in their letters and a quite revealing e mail were HMRC expressed this view privately.

So yes understandings did change as new information that challenged previous understandings or indeed statements emerged over time.

If the SFA can satisfy Celtic shareholders (not me) that the UEFA license was properly handled by the SFA, in 2011 then the case will rest as a result of SFA being seen to be accountable to those shareholders and providing a satisfactory answer.

If SFA cannot provide a satisfactory answer or SFA declines to, then it will be up to Celtic and their shareholders/supporters to decide what happens next depending on what is reported or not reported.

As I said lets wait and see.

Dr Jo walked into a shitstorm,a complete breakdown in relations between the players and Jock Brown. Fergus had neutered himself by trying to appease people who had no love of Celtic anyway, and passed responsibility to Jock Brown. He could not step in.

As you say,Dr Jo had that team playing some great stuff, despite the behind the scenes stuff. I’m probably wrong, but I think he made four significant signings as boss.

1- Lubo. And where have you been all my life, you utter genius made for a club like us.

2-Viduka. What a striker. What a lazy arrogant worse-than-a-man-short arse. Cost us £1m after Fergus balked at the £3m,we got £6m back. Leeds got £6m of the above, but his performance against Liverpool showed why he could do-if the fat lazy bassa ever got round to it.

3-Mjallby. What can I say? £1.3m of izzatso. A huge presence on the field, and a bit scary off it,even if you were in his company. Almost as scary as Bobo, but a much better player.

4-Riseth. Never really set the heather on fire for us,but rarely let us down. Unspectacular, aye. But solid and reliable. And we got our money back for him.

So,looking at the above,Dr Jo was a success IMO. It was the players and Jock Brown who let him down. They didn’t,couldn’t work together.

Eventually Fergus had to act. It was either hammer the players and remind them of their responsibilities. Or sack Jock Brown. Which he did,on a Friday.

Celtic went out and hammered Dundee 6-0 on the Saturday. I’d have fined the lot of them, cheated their manager, their fans, their owner till they got their own way.

I get your bitterness. I share the same views, not always, but agree with you sometimes nonetheless.

However, it’s not all bad. Despite the £49 salesmen we are currently overseeing the biggest demise of a football (cheating) institution in the world.

In years to come I suspect that people will look back and say that our board played a blinder.

Do I want the titles stripped? Absolutely. Do I think they will? Absolutely. But history tells you that this sort of scam, because that’s what it was, takes time to sort out.

People who are/were involved move on and others eventually do the right thing.

I wish we had been more vocal but then I’m a fan and not a director of the club. If I was a director I think I’d be following the same path as we are now.

It’s not too bad. We can clinch 7-in-a-row on Sunday.

Worked with Gillespies, tag line, Architects by Design.

I drew the masterplan – to others specifications – and was mainly responsible for the Hewden Stuart Garden. My 2 graphics guys Jungle Jim (not of this parish) and Tommy Tight Pants made it look good.

This was before computer assisted technology, the drawings were beautiful. But a bugger to set out on the ground.

The day of the opening drew near and we were informed that there were not enough invites to see Charles and Di do the opening ceremony.

Raging we were. It was our work, but every dignitary from Forres to Fakirk got an invite.

To appease us the work bought 20 bottles of champagne – between 6!

    At ten in the morning.

Watched it on the telly in the boardroom.

    Can’t remember much of it.
