For a decade or more Celtic produced prodigious youth teams but watched as Dundee United, Hibs, Hearts even Hamilton Accies graduated more effective adult players. Key to this is perhaps ensuring that players are tested at a higher level at key times in their development. In short, if you have not played regular first team football by the time you are 22 there is a good chance you will not fulfil your potential.
There is cost to this development, you’re not going to win all the time, especially when the two teenage central midfielders are surrounded by other young players: Adam Matthews, 20, Tony Watt, 18 and James Forrest, 21. Half time substitute, Victor Wanyama, is still only 21.
I’m looking forward to seeing more teenage kicks in the coming months.

On Friday morning I was asked what my wish list would be before the transfer window closed.
I replied that it was imperative that we strengthened at centre half and up front.
I’m pleased that we’ve added players where I hoped we would so the board do deserve credit for backing the manager.
Don’t know anything about any of the new acquisitions so just need to hope that the manager and scouts have got it right.

Was at the game yesterday and agree that it should have been well won by half-time, and we missed Wanyama in the second half. Heartening to see so many young players get their opportunity this season – they can only improve with first team games.
Would like to thank the old guy next to me for asking if I was available for a lumber later – I wasn’t – but it made my day….
