Tests for agricultural fields of Lanarkshire

750

Efe Ambrose is quite rightly receiving praise for an impressive debut on Tuesday but these are still early days, our comrades from Fife didn’t present a great challenge.  Berman Kayal also put in a sold shift and, for the record, I’ve been more impressed by him than the even more lauded Victor Wanyama, when both have been on top form, but I would not consider either for a start in Moscow.

With five days until we play Spartak it was more important we saw Joe Ledley, if only briefly.  Joe will need 90 minutes on Saturday.  Even if he gets this he might still be short of fitness for the Champions League.  The most important result from Saturday will hopefully be Georgios Samaras coming through 90 minutes without incident.

Along with Scott Brown, Georgios is one of only two players with Champions League experience prior to this season.  He was also absolutely critical in Celtic breezing through the qualifiers.  Fir Park is a tight, agricultural, field compared to the expansive artificial surface of the Luzhniki, but it will be a good proving ground for anyone hoping to impress Neil Lennon with their fitness.

Aiden McGeady for Spartak official website.

Did you have any predictions it was going to be Celtic in your Champions League group.

    – I have had such predictions and I talked about them in a dressing room with couple of people just after the game against Fenerbahce in Stambul.

What were your feelings when your predictions came true? What was your first thought?

    – It was positive shock, the chances for getting Celtic were not high. We could get any other team from four seeds but we got Celtic! I’m really happy for a chance to play against my former club. I came to Celtic when I was 12, I grew up there, broke into the first team, and of course I still support Celtic in Scotland. I still take Celtic games very emotionally. It’s going to be really very nice to go back to my native home Celtic Park with Spartak in December when we will play a game against Celtic in the Champions League competition.

When was your last time you have been at Celtic Park ?

    – I was there last time last Christmas. On December 28th Celtic played against Rangers. Celtic beat Rangers 1:0.

When and for what reasons you traveled to Glasgow last time?

    – I have been to Glasgow early September. I traveled to Glasgow just after Ireland game against Kazakhstan. Ireland coach Giovanni Trapatoni let me take one day off and I went from London to Glasgow. Me and my family celebrated first birthday of my daughter Kaya. She was born in September last year. After Kaya’s birthday I came back to London and joined Ireland team.

Who were those you contacted first after Spartak draw Celtic?

    – I got lots of calls and SMS messgaes from Glasgow, and the first person I called was Charlie Mulgrew. We started out together when we were just 12. Charlie stayed with Celtic until 18. After that he played for couple of the other teams, then he came back to Celtic when I was leaving club from Glasgow. For all these years me and Charlie were in good contact and just after the draw we exchanged our opinions.

Do you watch Celtic games regularly in Moscow?

If I only have possibility to watch Celtic games, I watch them in the TV or on internet.

How would you describe Celtic team today?

They are a young team looking to make their mark. Spartak will have a tough game there. The Scottish are known for giving it their all for the full 90 minutes. I hope we get a lot of supporters at Luzhniki to drive us on.

Who would you single out from Celtic team?

-It’s difficult to singe out only one Celtic player. They are all good players, same quality. I could say that Charlie Mulgrew is one of their best players. He was best SPL player last year. James Forrest does very well for Celtic on the right side. Another good player is Garry Hooper who scores many goals for Celtic.

Can we say that Celtic is different now from the team you used to play for in the past?

-Yes, Celtic is different team now and there is only Scott Brown from times when I played for them.

Do you think Rangers relegation to the fourth division for financial reasons has had strong influence on Celtic situation in Scottish football?

    – Of course, these are extraordinary circumstances. In contrary to Rangers, in the past years Celtic developed in right direction. That is the answer why Celtic play in the Champions League but Rangers are in fourth division. Scottish Premier League would be stronger with Rangers. Nonetheless I do not think no That club in the SPL has big influence on Celtic situation. Celtic can still do organic work, expand and improve without derby games against Rangers. Most of the Celtic fans have good understanding of the complexity of the situation. I don’t think Rangers fans would hardly feel sorry if similar happened to Celtic.

Did Celtic result against Benfica play in Spartak hands?

    – Yes, exactly. Draw in that game is good result for us. But it wsn’t a bad result for Celtic either, seeing as Glasgow hasn’t had a team in the group stage of the Champions League for the last four years. They’ve got a group of youngsters who don’t have have the required experience for the competition.

What memories do you have from these two games against Spartak Moscow in 2007?

-I have only positive memories from these games. A lot of Celtic fans reckon that match was one of the most exciting ones in the club’s European history. Tons of chances, two missed penalties, the drama of extra time, series of penalties after the game. Celtic got through to the next round but Spartak played very well in these games as well. It’s thanks to those matches that I understood how strong the Premier League is in Russia

Do you remember who against you played in 2009 in qualifications to the Champions League?

-Against Dynamo Moscow. I played against Dmitri Kombarov on my side. Who could say at the time we would play together for Spartak team in one year. You see how strange are football players careers? WE lost to Dynamo in Glasgow 0:1, but we beat Dynamo in Moscow 2:0.

Are Spartak enough strong to go through to the next round of the competition?

-Undoubtedly. Looking at how the group could pan out, Barcelona are the stand-out team, but the second place is up for grabs between Spartak, Benfica and Celtic. I think we’ve got huge potential. Last year not many people thought we had a chance of qualifying for the Champions League. But we shamed the skeptics. We played very well at the end of the championship and won second place. We beat Fenerbahce in dramatic game for the Champions League group qualifications. After that game we played very well at Camp Nou. We scored twice there and did well. I think that the game against Barcelona gave our fans more faith in good results for Spartak in that group. We are going to do our best to go through to the next round of the Champions League.

For all of their faults, we cannot complain about the SPL being vague in their rules. D9.3 is quite specific! pic.twitter.com/C3sHnJzX

( oops, pressed the wrong key) ………or desparate to save their jobs, or DESPARATELY trying to avoid talking positive about Celtic ……. One thing’s for sure, they’re going to get one helluva shock when FTT / BDO / commission ‘arrive’…….and when greengo plays his ‘get out of jail free’ card ……in the meantime, we should bombard Radio Clyde will emails ( and phone calls to SSB) REMINDING THEM WHAT THE ZOMBIES ACTUALLY DID TO SCOTTISH FOOTBALL …..even if only to get a laugh when they cut callers off, as they did tonight to one wee chap, who must have been P’ing himself laughing……….

  21. If P67 is thinking of writing a book or a collection of posts can I recommend a title, “From a Gorilla to Zombies and clowns inbetween”.

  22. Talk has it that FPLG and CG were spotted in Belfast city airport along with hordes of other brethren who are over for the Big Walk on Saturday.

Don’t know if they were handing out free tickets or not.

Will be interesting to see if Fat Sally is back in time to take charge at the Forres Mechanics game or will that be handed to his junior Durant ?
