That. Was. Incredible.

Just a short blog today.  I found the notes for my speech this morning.  A lot of positive things should have been said about Tony (one of the nicest CQN’ers I’ve met, and I’ve lots of great CQN’ers), Jim (more committed to the welfare of others than he would be comfortable you knowing), and David (combines the cynicism you can only get by spending 30 years in the publishing business with an often incomprehensive enthusiasm and positivity).  Three people who make things happen.

The CQN Golf Committee have organised nine incredibly taxing CQN Charity Opens, which seems to require an addition to stress, as they clearly thrive on it.

I got my timing all wrong when I set the whisky auction to end at noon yesterday as I was otherwise engaged until late afternoon, when things were getting a bit hectic, but with minutes to go, E (abbreviated) stepped in with what was an opening and winning bid of £550.  The money is already with Mary’s Meals.  My thanks to E and to A Ceiler Gonof Rust, who donated the prize.

None of us had any experience at organising this kind of event.  You think all you need is a mic. and a few speakers!  I asked Phil Agnew if he would do the raffle and auction for us.  He ended up supplying what would have been thousands of pounds worth of consultancy, which saw us over the line, wouldn’t take a penny for his trouble and provided a print signed by Henrik Larsson from his daughter.  They are a family with a long-established link to Mary’s Meals.

The quality and sheer volume of donations for auction and raffle overwhelmed us. We made a call that it was probably wise to limit the number of items we put up last night, and hold some for a later date – all will go towards Mary’s Meals. Thanks to everyone who came forward.

These are just the thanks I didn’t get to last night, more to come.

I’ve no idea how much money you raised yet but I am sure the cash is in to build the second and third school kitchens.  Within weeks your buildings will be feeding circa 2700 of the poorest children on the planet.  That.  Is.  Incredible!  Well played CQN.

I’m not going to pester you to read the Magazine or buy the Seville book today, but the MyDonate like to Marys’ Meals……

Have never heard us sing vile songs anything like the Aberdeen child abuse and anti Irish stuff. You have???

    Don’t believe you! Sorry.

Of course its not acceptable and is unpleasant but does that mean that club/supporters are entirely condemned?

The total result is everybody condemns everybody else, everybody else is scum and all is hatred. The seeming rush to find the bad in everything and everyone we come up against just gets me wearied.

Anyway I’m either taking all this too seriously or not seriously enough so best park this one I think.

No offence intended to anyone just an opinion, minority by the looks of it!

No falling out mate you’re entitled to your opinion like everyone else.

I happen to think that sometimes football supporters are too precious and sensitive about chants from opposition fans. However, these songs were vile and one is overtly racist, totally unacceptable in any modern society.

I was appalled at the Jimmy Saville song — absolutely vile — and equally appalled at the treatment handed out to Neil Lennon ( who I saw in Ashton Lane with his mates this evening == think they watched the game in a local hostelry ) — yet I am pleased for guys I know who are very decent people and who have supported the Dons all their days.

One of them gave me his time and recollections for Seville for which I am grateful.

My longest conversation on Friday night was with Archie MacPherson as I had to unexpectedly reallocate myself to the seat beside him — and he made a very telling point.

He said that despite the internet allowing absolutely free access to pornography and the like we live in a really prudish society, and that football is no longer the “social” game it once was. Taking the two together he meant that we are subjected readily and easily to all sorts of filth and that football fans no longer know what socialising on match day is.

Why anyone would think it ok to sing the Saville song etc is beyond me and where we once had friendly rivalry with the fans of different clubs we all too often now have one set condemning the other because massed bodies of fans do something that goes over the line in terms of actions and chants.

Football is meant to be a game — a social past time — an entertainment and we have to fight to get it back there.

It would be interesting/revealing to know what they mean when they sing “He’s one of your own” that would answer a few questions.

One of my best mates was an Aberdeen supporter, his dad was the Marketing Manager of the club for several years.

I knew many of the guys that he travelled an the Glasgow Aberdeen Supporter’s club; we got on fine but stayed well apart on days when we played them.

I’ve no doubt that many of them were there and singing the Savile and ‘Wrong Country’ song recently at Parkhead alongside many of their fellow fans.

As I said, completely unacceptable in modern society.

for some reason the Aberdeen fans want to rival the Deadclub’s fans levels of intolerance and hatred. have to say I’m surprised at their puerile behaviour as I’d always had a respect for their club and fans (hooligans excepted). At the Scottish cup game they choose enmasse to confirm what a shower of knumbnuts they are these days.

  17. I was in the company of a lifelong Rangers supporter yesterday. He is a Scot who owns a few businesses out here. It was the first time I had made his acquaintance and at first he seemed a decent enough guy. Then the drink started to flow. The meeting took place in the Croatia Club on the Gold Coast and it was a football function. He started telling anyone who would listen that Rangers had been wrongly demoted to division 3 and would “Soon be back in the Champions League”.

I listened for a while before challenging him.

I pointed out that they were not demoted and that they were in fact “allowed to enter the third division as a new club, leap-frogging other clubs who had long been waiting for that opportunity”.

He went on to deny that Sevco were a new club. He claimed that the old club had been wrongly liquidated because HMRC subsequently lost their claim against them.

Of course I told the assembled gathering that Rangers were liquidated not because of the case that was at the time at the First Tier Tribunal stage. I explained that they were liquidated because the new owner had failed to pay, among other debts, National Insurance, PAYE and VAT. Money they had already collected from employees and customers. Money they actually used to keep the insolvent club operating on a day-to-day basis.

It took another businessman, an Arsenal fan from Essex, to confirm that what I was saying was correct. He agreed that the current entity was indeed a new club and that the old club were liquidated along with its history.

The Rangers man loudly denied this and even went to claim that the liquidation had been cancelled when “HMRC lost the case”.

The Arsenal man laughed disdainfully at this.

“Are you really telling me,” he said. “That the directors of Rangers FC went into administration and then liquidation because of a potential debt that had not yet been found against them? Apart from the fact that it couldn’t happen legally, they would have to be complete idiots to do that. Companies go into administration and liquidation due to actual and admitted debts, not debts that may or may not materialise. You’re talking complete rubbish.”

It then get really interesting when one of our hosts, a Croatian, challenged the Rangers man to explain why the club had failed to pay transfer fees to football clubs, including a Croatian club for the transfer of Jelavic. That got all the other Croatians on-side.

Of course the hun denied this and claimed it had all been paid.

His final reaction? “This just proves everyone is against us. Even the English football supporters. We will be back stronger than ever.”

Deluded doesn’t even begin to describe the guy.
