That. Was. Incredible.

1667

Just a short blog today.  I found the notes for my speech this morning.  A lot of positive things should have been said about Tony (one of the nicest CQN’ers I’ve met, and I’ve lots of great CQN’ers), Jim (more committed to the welfare of others than he would be comfortable you knowing), and David (combines the cynicism you can only get by spending 30 years in the publishing business with an often incomprehensive enthusiasm and positivity).  Three people who make things happen.

The CQN Golf Committee have organised nine incredibly taxing CQN Charity Opens, which seems to require an addition to stress, as they clearly thrive on it.

I got my timing all wrong when I set the whisky auction to end at noon yesterday as I was otherwise engaged until late afternoon, when things were getting a bit hectic, but with minutes to go, E (abbreviated) stepped in with what was an opening and winning bid of £550.  The money is already with Mary’s Meals.  My thanks to E and to A Ceiler Gonof Rust, who donated the prize.

None of us had any experience at organising this kind of event.  You think all you need is a mic. and a few speakers!  I asked Phil Agnew if he would do the raffle and auction for us.  He ended up supplying what would have been thousands of pounds worth of consultancy, which saw us over the line, wouldn’t take a penny for his trouble and provided a print signed by Henrik Larsson from his daughter.  They are a family with a long-established link to Mary’s Meals.

The quality and sheer volume of donations for auction and raffle overwhelmed us. We made a call that it was probably wise to limit the number of items we put up last night, and hold some for a later date – all will go towards Mary’s Meals. Thanks to everyone who came forward.

These are just the thanks I didn’t get to last night, more to come.

I’ve no idea how much money you raised yet but I am sure the cash is in to build the second and third school kitchens.  Within weeks your buildings will be feeding circa 2700 of the poorest children on the planet.  That.  Is.  Incredible!  Well played CQN.

I’m not going to pester you to read the Magazine or buy the Seville book today, but the MyDonate like to Marys’ Meals……

The thing about the sheep is this – they have ideas above their station.

In the absence of their old nemesis that was the dead club, they are now taking aim at us.

    Absolute cretins they are.

They have to be put back in their place.

They do have aspirations to be our number one rival club. Hope they succeed instead of sevco.

  5. Is is very rarely possible to facilitate an exact 50/50 split when it comes to neutral venues. When Celtic played Rangers at Ibrox as a neutral venue in the cup semi-final, we got the Broomloan and Govan stands (22,000) while they got the rest (30,000). We also played them at Celtic Park in another neutral venue when the Celtic support got a bigger allocation then that of our rivals.

It would be a logistical nightmare to split the Govan and Main stands between Celtic and Rangers supporters because of the nature of the buildings as the authorities would somehow have to split the supporters in the concourses under the stands, not forgetting the problems at the turnstiles, so it is easier and safer to allocate entire stands to one support.

As for the possible Rangers v Dundee United semi-final at Celtic Park, it would be impossible to ensure a 50/50 split unless the SFA allocated 15,000 tickets to United fans (my estimate as to the number they would reasonably be expected to bring with them) and 15,000 to Rangers, based entirely on the fact that that’s all United were getting, hence a 30,000 crowd in a 60,000 stadium for a national semi-final.

When we play Cup Finals at Hampden against Scottish clubs – Rangers excepted – we always get the lion’s share of tickets because the SFA do not limit the Celtic allocation to what the opposition are getting. It just wouldn’t make sense and would be financial stupidity.

On this occasion I agree with the SFA’s stance in rejecting United’s plea for a change of venue. If Celtic had reached either of this year’s Cup Finals, would we have been happy if it had been changed to Ibrox to stop us having a “home” tie?

I know and I will, having seen your post yesterday I was close to making the Independent but couldn’t change plans.

  7. I understand all those sentiments, I really do.

But I have friends and family who support Aberdeen (&DU) as fanatically as we support Celtic. They are not scum.

That fact does infer either that the supporters are all good guys.

I really dislike the huge generalisations made when we talk of other clubs/support. It serves not positive purpose. The rush to use words like scum & hate is excessive to me

Not a popular view I suspect but just how I feel.

  8. 16 roads - 3-IAR on

DD – I accept what you are saying, but they have a particularly obnoxious element within their support.

They have been running amok at grounds all over Scotland this season, not that the SMSM report these incidents.

The Rangers are dead so I’m going to hate the sheep now instead. :D

The problem with Aberdeen is they think they’re a big club.

That was their first trophy in 20 years and their first final in 14.

That is not a big club.

Hibs and Hearts have a better record in getting to finals than they do in that time.

The Sheep think they are our rivals now.

    They are not.

They think they can challenge us now.

They cannot over a season but in one off games they can.

Most of that squad our out of contract at the end of the season and their captain is 35.

They are not a credible rival over a season.

Any talented players they have are harder to replace for them than it is for Celtic to replace our players in this sense – we can let star performers go and still be champions.

    They can not.

Should Pawlett leave, they have very little to offer and that was shown today – no goal threat minus him and Hayes.

I wouldn’t trust them to beat Sevco because they are not superior enough that they didn’t need to win on penalties against a team who bottled it.

Most of their chances today were long range shots.

That doesn’t fill me with confidence.

When we play them again at Celtic park Celtic must give them a beating they won’t forget in a hurry and leave them to ponder that over the summer.

  12. The reason the sheep are bleating now is because their team are doing well. There was none of this belligerent attitude when we took nine off them a few years ago and we’ll put manners on them after the split just get a few banners with mint sauce on them

You were probably wise to stick to your original plans. Some great CQN/friends company in The Independent, with a few songs of resistance, then pretending to be posh with Wee Oscar’s ma and da in The Copthorne took its toll :-)

At the recent game at Parkhead the majority sang the Jimmy Saville song as well as ‘You’re in the wrong effin country’. At Pittodrie a few weeks ago some of their shouts were even worse.

Well that little comment was completely unnecessary and unexpected from you.

I wasn’t at the game as I said. If GTF was all that was said, Celtic supporters have used that expression thousands of times against managers/players of opposition clubs and I doubt you’d christen them scum!

Truely understood but we tell people to GTF, sing (from others point of view) anti British songs, chants suggesting doubtful parentage etc etc. I think it is possible to be too precious about these things.
