The 29 day resurrection, Same old Alloa

736

Yesterday’s win over Motherwell came 29 days after the defeat in Gibraltar but for all intents and purposes there was a lifetime between the performances. Celtic have been transformed in that time. It’s still early days but you can see the week-on-week improvement in Celtic.

We look like a proper team, one which will be difficult to play against and will carry a threat. Although we went home raving about the flowing, attacking, football, Celtic were patient early in the game; it took them 11 minutes to craft a chance. I think this is going to be a feature of our play this season. Getting our systems organised and feeling our way into games before stretching opponents.

Scott Sinclair probably did more last night than on his marquee performance at Tynecastle to show what he will bring to the team. He often played between the forward and midfield lines and always had an eye open for the defence-splitting pass.

It was another solid performance from Moussa Dembele, who looks increasingly comfortable in a Celtic shirt. Goals help, of course. Top performer was Tom Rogic. Twice he scored by perfectly timing a run into the box, the first of which was an exquisite piece of work between Rogic and Callum McGregor.

You will have again noticed Rogic’s fondness for ‘having a pop’. He’d developing that antenna for goal which we like so much in Kris Commons, a good number of Motherwell keeper Craig Samson’s saves came from the Aussie.

In the next round it’s ‘Same old Alloa……..’ This game comes in the midweek between the first and second European group stage games, so a home tie against lower league opponents will probably be a welcome change of pace for Brendan and the players. And us.

The Road to Lisbon

As many of your know, our own Mouldy67 will undertake an enormous effort in May to commemorate the 50th anniversary of something or other. He and others will cycle from Celtic Park to the Estadio Nacional in Lisbon to raise funds for the Celtic Foundation.

They will leave Celtic Park on 6 May 2017 (50 years to the day since we won the league across the city), arriving at Estadio Nacional on 25 May, the 50th anniversary of the Lisbon Lions becoming the first team to break the Spain-Italy-Portugal stranglehold on the European Cup.

This is a stunning project. At the moment, opportunities exist for you to join Mouldy and the others in the cycle, you can also become a project sponsor, or simply donate to the fundraising effort. For more information, visit theroadtolisbon.com

Be’er Sheva pull 1 back against Maccabi after 53 mins through Bizaglo. Still down 2-1. Defending pretty poor standard all round here

Weebobbycollins, further to your post about Joe Pesci’s goodfellas character.

Henry Hill thought Joe Pesci did a great job playing that character but couldn’t portray on film the character’s real name Tommy De Simone ‘s, violent and unpredictable persona.

He was out of control according to Henry Hill.

Reminds me of a review of Crass’s excellent ‘Penis Envy’ (1981) in Hi-Fi News & Record Review : “From any angle, ‘Envy’ is a disturbing album…”

  11. Not be online since the game last night. I really enjoyed it. We were well entertained. I think our manager is getting the players to have the confidence to play Ronnie Deila hoped they would play. I supp[ose having the likes of Kolo Toure and Scott Sinclair does help. Mind you, I thought every one of the outfield players (apart from Izzy, when he was crossing the ball) did very well. Not a failure. More of this, please.

Has Neilson apologised? He was a thug when he played and, judging by Sunday, he has his players doing the same. Has Mrs budge apologised for her player being a cheat? Hope she does.

Bizaglo gets a good second and equalises for Be’er Sheva. 2-2 after 68 mins against Maccabi Haifa. They can move the ball about neatly up front, but the Haifa defending is very poor.

Big John Ogu looks like Wanyama on steroids but without the ability. Just sits in front of his back 4 and they leave the football to the front 5 who if they have space can play the ball about a bit.

  14. Our next meaningful game is the final CL Qualifier. Arguably our most important game of the season. So, what is the main topic of conversation on here? The Palestinian flag! I could say it is what makes us special as I cannot imagine any other set of supporters in Britain being so taken up by the possibility of a UEFA rule breach before such a big game.

A wee break occurred but only to talk of possibly Scotland`s greatest ever sportsman deciding not to court controversy by declining the offer to carry the Union Flag!

Ah, Celtic supporters. We really are special!

    No.

And are you really unaware of the impact of a UEFA ban on Celtic?

Why shouldn’t we talk about something that could have such a direct and significant impact on our club?

  20. thomthethim for Oscar OK on

Why don’t some of you barrack room lawyers contact UEFA and ask would it be permissible to display Palestinian flags in protest against Israel, without Celtic being penalised.

That should clear the matter up,unless the double barrelled intention is also to embarrass and damage Celtic.

Only a parasite would latch on to another body for it’s own benefit.

  21. 3-2 Be’er Shiva. To be honest, I think they look pretty poor. Maccabi Haifa make Motherwell look good.

  22. embramike says "the Huns are Deid" on

See that Brendan Rogers has John McGlynn over in Israel taking in this Maccabi Haifa v Be’er Sheva game . He will just have seen Be’er Sheva go 3-2 ahead on 84 mins through through Anthony Nwakaeme after being 2 down early on.

Brendan said when he took the former Hearts and Raith manager on board “I always look to have a technical analyst who will watch opponents”.

  23. I’ll be honest; if we can’t dispatch Be’er Shiva next week we don’t deserve to be in the CL Groups. They don’t look brilliant. Big and organised but defence looks dodgy. Pub team defending by Maccabi Haifa to let them back into it. Looked like couple of poor teams in comparrison to our performance last night!

Do they look better than Motherwell or Hearts?

  25. embramike says "the Huns are Deid" on

So Be’er Sheva come back from 2-0 down to win 4-2 with a stoppage time breakaway goal from #11 Buzaglo, his hat trick on the night. Hopefully John McGlynn has a full notebook for his journey home and a copy of the video of this game.

Having said that, they do not look a great team especially at the back, and won’t like a high tempo, high pressing game, with pacy wide men opening up their defence. And we will close them down quickly and not let them play the ball about.

And you won’t miss John Ogu – he’s a big unit, but doubt he would have much impact in a game in our league due to lack of stamina – and pace -and skill.

Somehow don’t think any of them have experienced anything like a CP European night and 55,000 giving it “YNWA”.

Also it’s a pity the weather looks fair for next Wednesday evening. Don’t think they would fancy playing in last night’s conditions. Would be happy to take a 2-0 result over there with us and grab a first half goal that should see the tie over.

  27. Like many on here, I am an extremely passionate supporter of the rights of the Palestinian people to have their own sustainable, viable State.

Like many on here I do not want to hurt or damage Celtic in any way and I agree any demo or flag waving should be kept outside the stadium. Unfortunately I have no doubt that some flags or banners will be displayed within the stadium and I only hope that the punishment is limited to a fine.

As always what will happen will happen, nothing we say here will impact on what happens so I am not going to worry about it.

Thrilled with the display but as always you have to consider the opposition. Motherwell stood off us and allowed us a bit of space & time, other teams will not be as accommodating. We are going in the right direction and I most certainly don’t want to rain on the parade but we need to keep a sense of perspective.

The tie against the Israelis will tell us a lot more about where we stand.

  28. Do Be’er Shiva look better than Motherwell or Hearts; not at all. Ember Mike summed it up. A fast paced game with our wide men will cause them real problems. If we are sensible, they won’t cause us many. I’d be hopeful of 2 or 3 goals against them at Celtic Park. Depending on how they respond when going a couple behind, it could easily be more.
