The 29 day resurrection, Same old Alloa

736

Yesterday’s win over Motherwell came 29 days after the defeat in Gibraltar but for all intents and purposes there was a lifetime between the performances. Celtic have been transformed in that time. It’s still early days but you can see the week-on-week improvement in Celtic.

We look like a proper team, one which will be difficult to play against and will carry a threat. Although we went home raving about the flowing, attacking, football, Celtic were patient early in the game; it took them 11 minutes to craft a chance. I think this is going to be a feature of our play this season. Getting our systems organised and feeling our way into games before stretching opponents.

Scott Sinclair probably did more last night than on his marquee performance at Tynecastle to show what he will bring to the team. He often played between the forward and midfield lines and always had an eye open for the defence-splitting pass.

It was another solid performance from Moussa Dembele, who looks increasingly comfortable in a Celtic shirt. Goals help, of course. Top performer was Tom Rogic. Twice he scored by perfectly timing a run into the box, the first of which was an exquisite piece of work between Rogic and Callum McGregor.

You will have again noticed Rogic’s fondness for ‘having a pop’. He’d developing that antenna for goal which we like so much in Kris Commons, a good number of Motherwell keeper Craig Samson’s saves came from the Aussie.

In the next round it’s ‘Same old Alloa……..’ This game comes in the midweek between the first and second European group stage games, so a home tie against lower league opponents will probably be a welcome change of pace for Brendan and the players. And us.

The Road to Lisbon

As many of your know, our own Mouldy67 will undertake an enormous effort in May to commemorate the 50th anniversary of something or other. He and others will cycle from Celtic Park to the Estadio Nacional in Lisbon to raise funds for the Celtic Foundation.

They will leave Celtic Park on 6 May 2017 (50 years to the day since we won the league across the city), arriving at Estadio Nacional on 25 May, the 50th anniversary of the Lisbon Lions becoming the first team to break the Spain-Italy-Portugal stranglehold on the European Cup.

This is a stunning project. At the moment, opportunities exist for you to join Mouldy and the others in the cycle, you can also become a project sponsor, or simply donate to the fundraising effort. For more information, visit theroadtolisbon.com

Jobo, thanks for those figures about Tom’s attacking prowess last night.

His goal against Killie at Rugby Park showed what ability he has.

Belated thanks for your post on Tuesday about sevco thinking last season’s Scottish cup final did not exist.

I hope you and your son had a good time playing golf at Musselburgh.

Over time UEFA will shut us down if flags are widely displayed.

Why are you tackling me? I am not threatening our club – what would you do?

    ——————————————————————————————————————–

“Tackling” you? It’s a blog! What you propose makes no logical sense – so I disagree, that’s all. If you don’t want people criticising your viewpoint then don’t post on a public blog.

Given how easy it is to take a flag in and given that there may be circa 60k people in attendance I suggest the only thing Celtic (not me) can do is remain vigilant and get stewards to confiscate anything UEFA might find offensive. This allows them to demonstrate to UEFA they’ve done all they can – which may or may not be enough.

There are many on here who are concerned about/ have distaste for the actions of the Netanyahu government.

The question for Celtic supporters is that any public display of such distate at a football match under the auspices of UEFA will inevitably bring severe consequences to the club we profess love. It is not a question of suppressing creedom of speech. That can be done outwith the stadium and, unfortunately, a banner bearing the slogan “FTSFA” though expressing the opinion of many Celtic supporters would also fall foul of UEFA rules. HH

Quick point and question, maybe it’s been covered as I haven’t read the blog much… Anyway..

Last night, after the game when bt sports were announcing their upcoming fixtures; one of the games was Dundee v rangers*

Now the club crest or badge for sevco was back to the oldco one.. With the 3 initials intertwined, rather than the one they’ve been using recently, I think it’s got a lion in the middle, don’t really pay much attention to it to be fair. … So it gave me a few questions…

When did they change the badge?

Why did they change the badge?

Why would they start using the oldco one again?

What is the significance of this?

These questions have all probably been answered at some point knowing this blog so just throwing these out there to save time searching and reading.

The real danger is thar UEFA would not levy a small fine but impose more severe sanctions due to the obstinacy of a small number. To conflate the issue of the cheating by RFC (IL) only clouds the issue. Celtic should have done more but when you have the governing bodycomplicit and the club unable to seek legal redress makes it nigh impossible for CFC to act.

But, sticking to the matter in hand, it is all to easy to say as Corkcelt does that he is not worried. Perhaps, UEFA sanctions might be some to worry about.

Since TET was responding to my original post, I hope you dont mind me jumping in, and throwing out a question or two (and they are questions … not digs at you, or anyone else).

If the SFA is corrupt, and Celtic cant rely upon them to protect Celtic’s interests fairly, isn’t that all the more – not less – reason why the club needs to take steps to do the right thing?

Why do you say that the club is unable to seek legal redress/it is impossible for the club? Sevco have done okay in the courts. And the Bunnet did okay taking them on …. just ask Farry. …

    THE EXILED TIM

I agree that UEFA rules are at best inconsistent and inconsistently applied. In fact they are downright stupid – where the punishment for serious crowd trouble is virtually the same as that for waving a banner, the contents of which they don’t approve, or the flag of a nation which they do not recognise. Logically they require to be changed. My point badly made is that if a club wants to play in one of EUFA organised competitions, it has to comply with all of the rules.

    MIKE IN TORONTO

Greetings. I would like the Board to be more proactive in defending our interests.

As I understand it, and am open to correction, the club cannot, under SFA rules sue that “august” body but am sure that ways could have been devised to highlight and challenge the cheating. Hopefully, questions can be put to the AGM to express the concerns of ordinary shareholders and an end to “taking it on the chin”.

The Farry case was a breach of SFA procedures by Farry and lying to his employers. Don’t think it falls into the category of suing the SFA. But, there again my memory ain’t what it used to be.

I think that our PR Department needs to be strengthened to combat the Level5 propaganda.

Our Board should be held to account at the AGM.

Long ramble but hopefully our support recognises that protests outwith the ground is OK but breach of UEFA rules involves probable penalties against CFC, and, in the long run against us, the supporters. HH

  24. The same fans who can’t wait to get their hands on the €35 million from CL qualification at the same time say f*** UEFA we don’t like you or your rules. Gives us peace, support your team and leave your flags at home.

  28. The overwhelming reaction I have on reading tonight’s blog is that we do not seem to trust our fellow Celts very much- it’s almost as if we do not know our own crowd.

In December 2009 when we played another Hapoel under Tony Mowbray, the same dire forecasts were made and the same concerns were raised and the same insults were used (uninformed- need to travel more etc;). Hey ho we won 2:0 but Hapoel were happier as they topped the group and we finished 3rd ( we lost the away goal to a late sucker punch). What political events happened at the game? Very little- a few fans tried to coordinate a late protest but the majority of Celtic fans ignored it, concentrated on the football and did not let us down.

It’s the same every Poppy Sunday- handwringing posts about the shame that our young uninformed fans are supposed to bring and, hey ho, very rarely do.

We have a good support. We have a good supporting record- not because we take heed of warnings from the like of Mats Nilloc but because we have always had a good sporting ethos. Our small away support in Israel, showed their respect to Palestine by visiting it, eliciting the same sneering attitudes about uninformed liberal westerners that they are getting on here.

So, my final view is- We’ll be fine. We have almost always been fine. We have rarely let the club down. When it has happened it has been a small group with flares (sadly 10 a penny at Euro games and will not lead to CP closing anytime soon) or 2 people with a fairly silly F*** UEFA banner which UEFA were silly enough to impose a fine on and draw further attention to their draconian powers.

That is not to say that I condone any protest inside the ground or encourage one. It is just that the vast majority of the Celtic support already knows better.

P.S. That dictum about travel broadening your viewpoint is just so much p**h. Donald Trump has flown all over the world and he understands nobody. He should have stayed at home and read more.
