The 29 day resurrection, Same old Alloa

736

Yesterday’s win over Motherwell came 29 days after the defeat in Gibraltar but for all intents and purposes there was a lifetime between the performances. Celtic have been transformed in that time. It’s still early days but you can see the week-on-week improvement in Celtic.

We look like a proper team, one which will be difficult to play against and will carry a threat. Although we went home raving about the flowing, attacking, football, Celtic were patient early in the game; it took them 11 minutes to craft a chance. I think this is going to be a feature of our play this season. Getting our systems organised and feeling our way into games before stretching opponents.

Scott Sinclair probably did more last night than on his marquee performance at Tynecastle to show what he will bring to the team. He often played between the forward and midfield lines and always had an eye open for the defence-splitting pass.

It was another solid performance from Moussa Dembele, who looks increasingly comfortable in a Celtic shirt. Goals help, of course. Top performer was Tom Rogic. Twice he scored by perfectly timing a run into the box, the first of which was an exquisite piece of work between Rogic and Callum McGregor.

You will have again noticed Rogic’s fondness for ‘having a pop’. He’d developing that antenna for goal which we like so much in Kris Commons, a good number of Motherwell keeper Craig Samson’s saves came from the Aussie.

In the next round it’s ‘Same old Alloa……..’ This game comes in the midweek between the first and second European group stage games, so a home tie against lower league opponents will probably be a welcome change of pace for Brendan and the players. And us.

The Road to Lisbon

As many of your know, our own Mouldy67 will undertake an enormous effort in May to commemorate the 50th anniversary of something or other. He and others will cycle from Celtic Park to the Estadio Nacional in Lisbon to raise funds for the Celtic Foundation.

They will leave Celtic Park on 6 May 2017 (50 years to the day since we won the league across the city), arriving at Estadio Nacional on 25 May, the 50th anniversary of the Lisbon Lions becoming the first team to break the Spain-Italy-Portugal stranglehold on the European Cup.

This is a stunning project. At the moment, opportunities exist for you to join Mouldy and the others in the cycle, you can also become a project sponsor, or simply donate to the fundraising effort. For more information, visit theroadtolisbon.com

Survey completed whilst people ‘take sides’ in the forthcoming CL qualifier. As someone who sat beside the Green Brigade (I was there before them!) I found them in the main entertaining but completely unable to distinguish between what was ‘acceptable’ and what was ‘unacceptable’ I eventually asked to be moved principally because I was fed up being stopped by the police every time I went up or down the stairs at 111 to my seat ‘ I am in my seventies date I look like I am in the Green Brigade ‘ fell on deaf ears anyway and then all the additional GBs arriving from the front from other parts meant I was in a standing area before it was one! (See age-related statement! ) Anyway they definitely regarded themselves as ‘We can say/display etc what we like rules are for others IMO’ Most banners were/are excellent but a banner which compares Wallace and Bobby Sands was an example of a perfect banner at the wrong time. Ie when UEFA rules apply as it is obviously a political statement which was what it was meant to be. A Scottish Cup Final would have been the perfect scenario IMO. Btw never heard many asking why Astana were playing in the UEFA competitions.. Sauce for goose etc. date I was vernacular ‘ Dae ah ‘ caught out again by the corrector!

tbh, I’ve never heard of him, watched less and less fitba since the Juventus game @ Celtic Park. The Beautiful game Stinks as it is.

    Come on Brendan.

  22. Cosy Corner Boy

Quite how swelling UEFA coffers is going to help some poor kid in Gaza who has no idea how many or how splending flags or banners being waved at CP are, escapes me.

However if it’s really about offering practical support how about a joint funded collection to provide humanitarian aid through an NGO to those in need of it? I appreciate making sure such aid reaches its target is not easy but nothing worth doing is.

The arrangement is Celtic were fined 18k euro last time so let’s call it 22k this time.

Celtic pledge to match any money collected before the match up to a £10k cap.

If £5k collected £10k aid is delivered. If £12k raised then £22k in aid is delivered split £12k collected £10k club.

This makes it a joint effort by club and support totally in keeping with the charity on which the club was based.

UEFA don’t get the £22k and whatever is raised is directed to where it will be appreciated.

I’d call that total solidarity with no risk.

Celtic F.C. would then quite reasonably be accused of ” taking sides.”

Betcha they wouldn`t go anywhere near such a proposition.

    MACJAY

Celtic could easily address that by pointing out to UEFA that they were doing their utmost to ensure that rules were adhered to.

As it would take place outside the ground,UEFA have no say in it.

    I wasn`t referring to a UEFA response.

I was thinking more of a Jewish and perhaps Israeli response.

In addition , how would Nir Bitton feel ?

You probably know that I have had very little sympathy for Israeli conduct over a large number of years.

But I really don`t think we should be involving our club in what are very delicate issues.

    Outside the ground?

Go for it….but there will always be one nutter.

  26. I know the Israeli flag has no legitimacy in the Bible.
