The 29 day resurrection, Same old Alloa

736

Yesterday’s win over Motherwell came 29 days after the defeat in Gibraltar but for all intents and purposes there was a lifetime between the performances. Celtic have been transformed in that time. It’s still early days but you can see the week-on-week improvement in Celtic.

We look like a proper team, one which will be difficult to play against and will carry a threat. Although we went home raving about the flowing, attacking, football, Celtic were patient early in the game; it took them 11 minutes to craft a chance. I think this is going to be a feature of our play this season. Getting our systems organised and feeling our way into games before stretching opponents.

Scott Sinclair probably did more last night than on his marquee performance at Tynecastle to show what he will bring to the team. He often played between the forward and midfield lines and always had an eye open for the defence-splitting pass.

It was another solid performance from Moussa Dembele, who looks increasingly comfortable in a Celtic shirt. Goals help, of course. Top performer was Tom Rogic. Twice he scored by perfectly timing a run into the box, the first of which was an exquisite piece of work between Rogic and Callum McGregor.

You will have again noticed Rogic’s fondness for ‘having a pop’. He’d developing that antenna for goal which we like so much in Kris Commons, a good number of Motherwell keeper Craig Samson’s saves came from the Aussie.

In the next round it’s ‘Same old Alloa……..’ This game comes in the midweek between the first and second European group stage games, so a home tie against lower league opponents will probably be a welcome change of pace for Brendan and the players. And us.

The Road to Lisbon

As many of your know, our own Mouldy67 will undertake an enormous effort in May to commemorate the 50th anniversary of something or other. He and others will cycle from Celtic Park to the Estadio Nacional in Lisbon to raise funds for the Celtic Foundation.

They will leave Celtic Park on 6 May 2017 (50 years to the day since we won the league across the city), arriving at Estadio Nacional on 25 May, the 50th anniversary of the Lisbon Lions becoming the first team to break the Spain-Italy-Portugal stranglehold on the European Cup.

This is a stunning project. At the moment, opportunities exist for you to join Mouldy and the others in the cycle, you can also become a project sponsor, or simply donate to the fundraising effort. For more information, visit theroadtolisbon.com

Did not mean don’t disagree with me, of course not – but was looking for some sort of other answer.

As Jobo says, shutting down an area with innocent people not involved, is draconian – however it may well be the only thing that placates UEFA.

Let’s hope it all comes to nothing and these people are just sounding off.

We will need a strong police/steward presence next Wednesday.

Terrific to see some new additions to the blog as well as a personal abuse free debate.

Brendan’s Celtic has exciting potential and the club are investing in players. That shouldn’t be overshadowed by puerile protests.

  3. Anyone displaying a flag / banner that contravenes the UEFA rules is treating me, Celtic and tens of thousands of other Celtic people with utter contempt.

Celtic getting fined, banned or punished will not advance the Palestinian cause one iota.

Apologies if I misunderstood – I thought you were advocating that, should someone fly a flag, then we should close the area where it happened. As you say – UEFA would make that decision for us.

Hopefully our support will be focussing on a slick performance on the pitch.

There will be plenty of cops – overtime, innit…?

Sutton’s feelings and pronouncements about Ronny were shared by a great number of Celtic supporters, the difference being, he expressed them on national TV.

Whether he should have done so is a matter of opinion, but my feeling is that he expressed them as a concerned and frustrated Celtic fan.

I would rather have that than the likes of Andy Walker who criticises Scott Brown for calling Jamie Walker a cheat while seeming to excuse the dive.

Someone like Sutton who isnt afraid to call a spade a spade and criticise Celtic when justified is better than a clown like BFDJ who always thinks the Ranjurs are great….

  8. Participation in sport normalises and legitimises rogue regimes and rogue regimes seek out sport to gain legitimacy. UEFA facilitate this at a number of levels.

    Those are conscious political acts.

Refugees Welcome is a political slogan presented by many football supporters. Because it’s ‘acceptable’ it is ignored.

    Might be a nice TIFO…

  9. I recall a few years ago that the Ajax fans displayed a huge Star of David flag. I don’t know if it was during a European of domestic tie. Does anyone know if they received punishment for it?

Level5 dropped the Palestine flag debate in here earlier. Disrupt our chance of a £25m bounty is their concern. No right minded Celtic fan will use the Hapoel game as a place for Holy Land politics. Wave the green flag next Wednesday.

  14. The day we see Sinclair, Moussa, Griff and Roberts unleashed together will be a day to remember. Watched Brendan’s interview last night, he explicitly said he has told the club the two players he wants. One mighty be Vorm, the other a midfielder. I think he will only get the midfielder if we make the CL.

  16. Saw some talk earlier about Rogics performance.

One thing that struck me last night was with the injection of pace into our team, defences are having to sit deeper and as a result so far it created a lot more space for Rogic to play in and as well as that, there were a lot more options for him to pick from.

Our play has underwent a huge change and perhaps through time teams will find a way to adjust how they set up against us to make it more difficult but right now it looks like its going to be a boon time for whoever gets that #10 role!

The big fella has taken his chance and has also probably made it hard for BR to look at another option for that position right now.

Play well and keep the jersey!

He’s still only 23, but it somehow feels like he should be older due to the time he has been here. If he can keep fit now then it is going to be very interesting to see if Brendan can get the best of the undoubted talent that he has.

Ban all flags and symbols of identity which challenge the dominant narrative?

I loved Tom’s contribution last night. He was my motm. His strength and stamina allied to his quick skillfull feet was a revelation to me last night. Scotstoun Clair is the real deal. We are in for a fun fitba season. Happy Days.

  20. I think people who expect to see Sinclair, Roberts, Dembele and Griffiths in the same team every week are going to be disappointed.

I’m pretty sure all things being equal Rodgers wants to play 4-3-3, Sinclair and Roberts are automatic choices, which leaves Dembele and Griffiths to fight it out.

He has shown he can be flexible when required, so sure we will see various formations through the season, the 3-2-3-2 he played v Imps could be very useful against packed defences at home.
