The 29 day resurrection, Same old Alloa

736

Yesterday’s win over Motherwell came 29 days after the defeat in Gibraltar but for all intents and purposes there was a lifetime between the performances. Celtic have been transformed in that time. It’s still early days but you can see the week-on-week improvement in Celtic.

We look like a proper team, one which will be difficult to play against and will carry a threat. Although we went home raving about the flowing, attacking, football, Celtic were patient early in the game; it took them 11 minutes to craft a chance. I think this is going to be a feature of our play this season. Getting our systems organised and feeling our way into games before stretching opponents.

Scott Sinclair probably did more last night than on his marquee performance at Tynecastle to show what he will bring to the team. He often played between the forward and midfield lines and always had an eye open for the defence-splitting pass.

It was another solid performance from Moussa Dembele, who looks increasingly comfortable in a Celtic shirt. Goals help, of course. Top performer was Tom Rogic. Twice he scored by perfectly timing a run into the box, the first of which was an exquisite piece of work between Rogic and Callum McGregor.

You will have again noticed Rogic’s fondness for ‘having a pop’. He’d developing that antenna for goal which we like so much in Kris Commons, a good number of Motherwell keeper Craig Samson’s saves came from the Aussie.

In the next round it’s ‘Same old Alloa……..’ This game comes in the midweek between the first and second European group stage games, so a home tie against lower league opponents will probably be a welcome change of pace for Brendan and the players. And us.

The Road to Lisbon

As many of your know, our own Mouldy67 will undertake an enormous effort in May to commemorate the 50th anniversary of something or other. He and others will cycle from Celtic Park to the Estadio Nacional in Lisbon to raise funds for the Celtic Foundation.

They will leave Celtic Park on 6 May 2017 (50 years to the day since we won the league across the city), arriving at Estadio Nacional on 25 May, the 50th anniversary of the Lisbon Lions becoming the first team to break the Spain-Italy-Portugal stranglehold on the European Cup.

This is a stunning project. At the moment, opportunities exist for you to join Mouldy and the others in the cycle, you can also become a project sponsor, or simply donate to the fundraising effort. For more information, visit theroadtolisbon.com

Do Be’er Shiva look better than Motherwell or Hearts; not at all. Ember Mike summed it up. A fast paced game with our wide men will cause them real problems. If we are sensible, they won’t cause us many. I’d be hopeful of 2 or 3 goals against them at Celtic Park. Depending on how they respond when going a couple behind, it could easily be more.

Parkheadcumsalford, we will be waiting a very long time for any apology from anyone at Tynecastle.

We still have not been told the outcome of their investigation into one or more of their fans hitting Rab Douglas with coins about thirteen years and them making a public apology to Neil when he was attacked at Tynecastle.

In one game, Andy Webster caught Didier Agathe on the knee and we were awarded a penalty. Steven Pressley then launched a tirade of abuse at Didier that he was feigning injury. Didier was out for six weeks as a result. To rub it in, Henke scored the resultant penalty for us to win 1 nil.

A horrible lot out Gorgie way apart from those who have backed Resolution 12.

Agreed. If we hit them hard early, they might not have the stomach for the fight. They will only score if we get complacent at the back. Best to keep possession like last night, frustrate them, tire them out and the mistakes and chances will come.

  4. These flag-threatening nutjobs are part of a ‘cell’ of nutjobs in Scotland – always desperate to cause some kind of trouble, because they have nothing else in their lives – Clerkin the arch nutjob is a good example – the Scottish Resistance….dear God.

The sadness is that some of them choose to call themselves Celtic fans.

Make no mistake about it, just as they would sell the working class down the river for their contorted dogma – so they would also damage Celtic for a stupid gesture, that they could ‘natter’ about on their facebook pages.

If I see any flags, I will report it to stewards – I urge others to do the same – if it happens in the Safe Standing Area – I would support closure until they learn their lesson.

  6. Having read the posts re the fleg issue, one post stood out for me…….this one.

Mike in Toronto on 11th August 2016 5:25 pm

We were cheated out of league titles, and the consequent financial rewards that came with those titles (money from participation in Europe). The exact number is unclear, but, realistically, we are talking millions of pounds, if not tens of millions of pounds. Yet, as far as I can tell, the Board has done SFA (if you will pardon the pun) to seek redress for same. Yet the slience on this issue from the Board and most on CQN (except for a few ‘nutters’) is deafening.

On the other hand, a comparatively modest fine from UEFA for a flag, and people seem to want the offenders hung, drawn and quartered.

What’s the old saying ‘steal a little and they throw you in jail, steal a lot and they make you a king’….

I am not saying people should wave Palestinian flags (although I am not saying they shouldn’t) ….I get the pragmatism of those who say we will likely be fined (it is EUFA’s ball, so they get to make the rules), but something about this seems wrong to me ….

  7. Mats Nilloc –

I am 1 of 2,800 season ticket holders in the safe standing area. Are you seriously suggesting that if someone else in that area waves a Palestinian flag that I should then have my season ticket suspended? Under what possible loical argument should that happen?

The real danger is thar UEFA would not levy a small fine but impose more severe sanctions due to the obstinacy of a small number. To conflate the issue of the cheating by RFC (IL) only clouds the issue. Celtic should have done more but when you have the governing bodycomplicit and the club unable to seek legal redress makes it nigh impossible for CFC to act.

But, sticking to the matter in hand, it is all to easy to say as Corkcelt does that he is not worried. Perhaps, UEFA sanctions might be some to worry about.

Re Mat Nillocs’ contribution I find that most unhelpful. Some people have deep and genuine concerns for the plight of ordinary Palestinians BUT waving a flag will not move forward one iota the cause they are espousing.

If they genuinely want to help I am sure that regular contributors to this site could list 50 or more practical suggestions. HH

gb has just broken the world record for some cycling event in the qualifying rounds,

if that time is not beaten, and in fact they dont get a medal place in the final, why are they not given the gold anyways as its the best performance in the competition ?

i think that would be fair.

A few of the fines we have had from uefa could and should have been challenged by the club, a half wit hun lawyer would have got us off them, yet the club chose not to do anything and accept the fines, I have to ask myself why this is, they are shrewd business men, they would know that the charges were a stick on to easily overturn.

The one that instantly spring to mind is the Wallace-Sands one, as I said a half wit hun could have got us off that one, but they chose to pay the £42K without a whimper.

  26. Saint Stivs – I think you know the answer to that one! If ‘gold’ medals went to the best performers in the earlier rounds we would have several more European trophies to our name (70 – 74 and 03 at least)

Thanks for response. Like yourself I was surprised that the club meekly accepted these punishments. Perhaps those more clued up than myself could enlighten whether there is an appeals process or would the case have to go to CAS with a potentially more severe punishment.

I also find some of EUFA judgements on what constitutes crowd misbehaviour rather arbitrary but for the sake of the players, the supporters and the club, if we want to be in the competition we have to abide by their rules and, if the Board think the rules require amendment then thatis an issue for a later day. HH

  29. JOBOBALDIE – Perhaps the thought of ‘stitching-up’ their neighbours might make them stop to think – what would you suggest?

  32. I posted a comment last week when the blog was talking about drawing the Israeli team.

Sir Robert Kelly had withdrawn Celtic from the 1968 Euro Cup after drawing Ferencvaros in protest . I also spoke about Sir Robert stating sport and politics cannot be separated .

Big Bones post and a few others earlier have convinced me that whilst we may have really strong opinions on politics , in this case the Israeli treatment of Palestinians there are other ways we can show our support for the Palestinian cause, outside the ground.

Someone posted earlier there are some things more important than sport and they are right.

But to many, me included , Celtic are precious .

Never should anyone put our club at risk of sanction or expulsion
