The Bank, financial doping and moral hazard

955

Dundee United chairman Stephen Thompson’s comments to yesterdays’ Herald are worthy of attention.  During the summer, when United received a £1m bid from Rangers for David Goodwillie and Blackburn Rovers were hovering, Bank of Scotland, took an active part in the deliberations.  Thompson told the Herald, “The bank wanted me to take £1.2m for him, but I said no to that. I had to stand up against the bank.”

Thompson more than doubled the money on offer for Goodwillie, allowing him to shave over £2m off their bank debt, but this exchange took place only a few months after the same bank told former Rangers chairman, Alastair Johnston, to accept the bid for the club from Motherwell born thousandaire Craig Whyte or the bank would demand same-day repayment of Rangers borrowings.

Bank of Scotland, part of Lloyds Banking Group (LBG), are significantly exposed to Scottish football and required a taxpayer bail-out two years ago, so although their interference in the running of clubs could seem overbearing, we shouldn’t be surprised at it.  It’s business, and if you are employed at LBG with a responsibility to your taxpayer-shareholder, it’s necessary business.

Fortunately, Celtic are free from such interference, as are Rangers, thanks to their aforementioned benefactor, but if a liquidation event at a large club threatened income streams to the league I would be amazed if the Bank didn’t use the ‘Vote Newo FC  into the SPL or repay your borrowings immediately’ line.

Stephen Thompson, who sits on the SPL board, might not have a choice on whether or not to vote a Newco FC into the SPL ahead of 30 Scottish Football League clubs, but he and his fellow board members will be able to set the tariff on any exceptional league entry to what would become a financially privileged football franchise.

12 seasons of cumulative benefit from financial mis-dealings should result in 12 seasons of penury at whatever points rate the league calculate benefit was accrued.  For one scenario I have in mind, around 15 points per season sounds fair, with an expunging from the records of any trophies ‘won’ by Financial Doping.

This is measured, deliverable, is in the power of the SPL board to impose, and sets a minimum moral hazard to inhibit future mis-deeds.

  2. Money can’t buy you love,…eh aye ok ano but it can buy you some prostitutes!! think that fella lost his way during that call. haha

This whole debate about newco is a total yawnfest.

I do not care what happens to thems but I do think

they will wriggle out of this with the least amount of

damage, the old knuckle crunchers will see to that.

On another note I hope that Celtic and the catholic

church pursue that odious cretin jeff winter and bring

the full force of the law down on him.

Let’s use the bad snp law to our advantage and jail

    this brain dead Orc.

Lived in Manchester 31 years and only ever seen no more than a couple of Hun tops (apart from you know when) never had a hint of trouble only the occasional friendly banter when wearing the hoops. Down here they don’t give a toss about Scottish footie in general but there’s far more hoops friendly folk than not…….

There was a fee of 1.75 for my 2 tickets mate. First time i have used it & it’s very good.

  6. If Celtics name is attached to anything that helps to defraud the inland revenue for tens of millions then they will be dragging our name through the mud. Vandalism of the highest order.

I would think that anytime never mind austere times.

If it was a collective debt then I can understand the need for our involvement.

Football sadly now is big business but to consider the huns as being too big to fail is lazy custodianship.

Scottish Football should set an example for football itself and legislate for nothing.

Let things take their course and then come out defiant with regards to the future.

If the SFA and SPL needs dismantled in the future then let them run with their hun Newco strategy and then blow their corrupt backsides out of the water.

Football either means what it says. Platini, Blatter, financial fair play or it doesn’t. Even the hun minded Uefa and Fifa representatives cannot bury this one as it is an integral part of Tory party policy.

Ok gotta go to my fave restaurant.

Have a good night bhoys and thanks for the good wishes.

Len B- The huns have still to pay the full fee to Rapid Vienna as far as im aware. Also stories at the time that 3rd parties financed the deal.At this rate they will make zero on him.

We owe the SPL precisely sweet nothing. This is a league, of twelve, that plans to reduce it’s own numbers to ten, ie eliminate two existing or prospective clubs to form its’ little self-serving cartel, in bed with Sky Sports. The “Old Firm” will represent 20% of that league, with eight other teams lined up to make up the numbers. And that is assuming Rangers actually pay the HMRC, and all other creditors what they actually owe them. Forget about this club or that club voting against Rangers remaining in the SPL, their continuation is guaranteed by one club and one club alone, Rangers’ biggest cheerleaders, Celtic Football Club! We should offer our resignation now, apply to join the SFL and watch the SPL disappear without trace, which it will. Either we are a club or we are not. Or can the Green Brigade come up with some songs about Celtic PLC?

  9. Many of you will have seen Brogan Rogan Trevino and Hogan’s posts over the last couple of days highlighting this wee girl’s illness. Thought I’d re-post the link having read a bit more through Kerrydale Street. Maybe those who haven’t had a look might like to. Why do I always feel shame when I see the likes of this?

After hearing about it from the Bhoys on here I bought series 1 to 3. Never thought anything would beat the Sopranos but Breaking Bad does. Enjoy…I’m just spewing I can’t buy season 4 till March here in OZ.

  11. Bada

    Agreed.

With the Huns financial situation it is scarcely credible that they will be in a position to make any money out of any deals.

No-one, no-one at all, needs to give them anything near some of the suspiciously generous amounts given the PR treatment by some…..

  12. ‘I still believe Craig Whyte’s got a plan’.

Of course he’s got a plan.

It involves the huns being liquidated.

  13. Lads any of you listen to that caller on clyde going on about huns financial situation and he then goes on to mention prostitutes lol

  14. Rangers fan on clyde there, saying rangers would never lose theyre history if they went out the game, blah blah he nervously asked do you agree?

Just thought for a minute 1 of them was going to say “YES THEY ACTUALY CAN LOSE EVERY BIT OF HISTORY” it was avoided.

  15. Hun on Clyde makes good point.

‘The SPL would welcome a newco huns with open arms, they would roll out the red carpet for them’.

  16. Here is a wee poser for you all:

What if newco didn’t finish top 6? What happens with Sky deal? Or even better if they got relegated what happens?

It is against the whole integrity of football and sport in general to have such a contract. Would teams lie down and let them win to preserve the Sky deal and in turn their own jobs?

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

  17. ArranmoreBhoyLXV11 on

Can I just say… I m looking forward to the match this weekend… Can’t wait to see the hoops and stop reading in the papers all the PR spin from the Govan paupers… HH

  18. If the huns are so important and the SPL can’t survive without them why don’t the SPL clubs assume responsibility for the huns tax bill?

    That would be fair.

  19. That caller going on about keeping Rangers in the SPL for the good of our game had me shouting at the radiio

“ye wurnae saying that when you were spending other people’s money to stay top dog ya xxxxx.

Apart for their being no parallel with Mothetwell’s reasons for entering administration that they emerged from as Motherwell it is totally indicative of a mindset that sees no wrong in his club’s behavior.

It is what we are up against and must attempt to correct.

  20. !!Bada Bing!! Kano 1000 on

Bankiebhoy1- I think the ole “undisclosed fee” may appear for a few transfers at Poundland.

Hope Lady Serge gets well and out the hospital soon. Lovely gesture sir.

  23. Jackie Mac. He’s in the squad for the weekend. My bet is he hits a vein of form in the run in. Maybe Kayal being out (although they play different positions) helps his chances getting in the team simply from a numbers perspective.

  24. Big Hail Hail to Paul67. Came in from work to a very professional, weighty, glossy copy of CQN.5. When are you taking orders for the next one ?

Nice one in your lead, another scenario which should be thrown into open forum, so that it can be headed off .

Happy Birthday to Brimmer and Awe Naw (who has probably ’amended’ the messages in his cards already)

    Away to do some reading.

  25. Jeg er Neil Lennon-Greeninbingley on

And as for oldco, newco, borrowedco and, um, blueco, i think Paul had it on the money the other day when he said that UEFA is the deal maker/breaker here, not the SFA.

There are rules which for obvious reasons Scotland’s authorities want to bend or break to keep Them swaggering, on largely unaffected by their 12-year guilt.

UEFA will not let them. IMO the SFA know that.
