The cycle of sacking managers

654

We spoke about Stale Solbakken here as an option during one of our recent management vacancies.  At the time he was manager of Copenhagen, who were playing monopoly with the Danish game and had become the first regular Champions League competitor from that country.  Yesterday he was sacked as manager of Wolves, who are 18th in the second tier of English football.

Mick McCarthy led Wolves to promotion into the FA Premier League in 2009 but was sacked in February after slipping into a relegation place.  The club were relegated and Solbakken was appointed in July.  Solbakken, still only 44, won five leagues in six seasons at Copenhagen and competed well with a tiny budget in the Champions League.  He is a good manager but his failure at Wolves presents more evidence that the fabled guru football manager doesn’t exist.

Managers are cogs in a management system which involves players, scouts, technical experts, coaches, youth development staff and administrators.  If a club gets all the other components right, as Copenhagen unquestionably did, the guy with ultimate control over team matters will appear to over-perform.   Conversely, if you have a genuinely talented manager but he doesn’t work with a crucial part of the football structure, progress will stall.  Martin O’Neill taught us more about football tactics in his first season than we had learned in the previous 20 years, but he was not known to sign players he hadn’t identified when playing against his teams.

Wolves chance of recruiting a manager as good as Mick McCarthy is slight.  They could do worse than look at how Celtic stemmed the flow of failure by taking a guy who was already working with the scouts, coaches, technical experts, youth development staff and administrators.  Don’t look for a guru, get the system right and find someone who will work within it.

Good point. At the 6-2 game, the guy next to me was so drunk he slept through all of it. He woke up at the end and asked if we’d kicked off yet! He must’ve been absolutely steamin’ because the noise from start to finish was phenomenal.

Buy woolies and operate it as a Celtic sportsware franchise, buy the history (intangable asset) and stick the old brand on every Celtic shop in the world,

    I am good mate, thanks.

I’ve been reading the debate with interest, but am so far removed from it all – geographically at least – that I find it difficult to comment. I haven’t seen any footage from Dens Park and know little about the GB other than what I have read on here.

It’s an interesting discussion none the less.

Aye it looks like Celtic Park will soon be full of WWF minded peepul and the fat right sing bassas who cant stand them but will tolerate them as long as they keep putting their hands in their pocket for them. You can take a horse to water etc.

Tonights debate has convinced me more that the BMCUWP, MWDs, BTs etc will soon be wincing with embarressment.

I am heading home tomorrow, and going to the Hearts game on the 19th.

It’s the only game on while I am there.

The family season tickets are right next to the GB in 111. I’m meeting a coupla posters beforehand, and swapping tickets with them.

They-like most people-just want the chance to be in the mix,to have atmosphere like when we were younger. The GB provide that.

I doubt it will be provided for us in the seats we have swapped for!

Maybe the GB are getting a bit above themselves, possibly they are becoming self-important,I dunno.

What I do know is that the ground is like a morgue without them.

On the other hand, does their presence actively discourage others from starting the songs and chants, like we did in the past?

Not every chant started in the Jungle, far from it……..

the seats, the season tickets, resultant age of supporters, supporters buses spread about the stadium, losing supporters buses – thats what happened to the spontaneous singing,

I have a problem when reading the debates on CQN. Everybody has a point to different degrees So respect everyone’s opinion. What I really enjoy on the nightshift is a wee bit of music now and again to chill out. Here is my contribution to chillin’ out.

I find it difficult to criticise the board when it comes to finances, they have done a pretty good job under difficult circumstances.

Their defence of the biscuit-tin is a marvel to behold.

Their defence of the ethos of the club, mmmmmm, largely not.

Their treatment of the paying customer, even less so.

And their total disdain for the dyed-in-the-wool fan just beggars belief.

Did I say disdain? Ah,swap that for contempt.

When you are at a game that is historically known to be an alcohol fuelled holiday time fixture that has been so bad legislation was brought in to stóp drunken yobs getting entrance to the stadium. Yet you know the police wont do their job and some real move guy has foolishly brought his sic year old daughter to the game. The language is deplorable, bottles of vodka are being passed about and a banger goes off near his daughter. The poor guy instead of being smart enough not to take his daughter has to leave the stadium as that would be the smart thing to do but being a big daftie complains and gets a smack. The stewards and polis trash everyone involved. The fathers mates wince in embarrasment.

  25. Since being saved from the precipice 20 years ago Celtic has enjoyed a remarkable despite competing with a ‘cheating opponent’ weilding massively greater cash than our club has.

Our club has achieved its current position of last 16 in the CL and still in all other domestic competitions aghainst a backdrop of outrageous financial imbalance and largese across football throughout Euorpe.

Our club navigates through a bias media, and refereeing body. It also has to contend with the balance of public opinion still being anti Celtic….

Despite all of this, recently beating the best in Europe, a great asset management programme for talent, and the potential of 3 or 4 titles to be won in the next few years, thanks to our leaderships prudence, we have a body of support which still seeks to magnify our weakensses, create schisms, rather than drive home our advantage….

These paranoid, malcontents raging against perceived or imaginary injusticies, based on ignorance or cognitive dissonance, amaze me…

I would love to see every armchair Quarterback given real accountability and a few seasons to activate their great masterplans……

If it wasnt such a risk to Celtic I wish one of these ‘armchair experts’ would actually grow a pair and put themselves up to do PL’s job…….

    AoW,

dont believe so, was no attack, the mhan displayed all the emotions most of us would acknowledge as proper response to threat, many of us would fire in as he described but enough would know what was important, our charge.

Now take that same passion and turn it on the Celtic support, make the Celtic support a Celtic supporters biggest threat ffs mhan sober up, everyone of us has a incident to report and they stick out because they are rare, swapping rare incidents storys can be manipulated jeeze we already know this MSM 101 ffs
