The great United reunion, signing backup keepers

1109

Ronny Deila’s dream of reconstructing the Dundee United team of 2014 is on track as United have agreed terms for the sale of striker Nadir Ciftci, who is set to join Stuart Armstrong and Gary MacKay-Steven in green and white hoops.

United are feeling sore at losing three players to a rival but it could be argued this deal is a positive result for them.  They are no different than Celtic in needing to acquire good players who will enhance their team and generate transfer fees when they leave.

Armstrong and Mackay-Steven gave Celtic a timely boost when they arrived in the team in February.  If Ciftci adapts as quickly he’ll do well.

Signing a backup goalkeeper is a tricky call.  Do you blow a large slice of budget on a genuine contender for the goalkeeper’s jersey, or perhaps promote the next teenage David Marshall?  Both are viable calls.  If we sign Logan Bailly (29) for a fee from Belgian club Leuven the expectation at Lennoxtown is that he will push Craig Gordon.

That would leave us with competition across the field, apart from the left back slot…..

  1. Booooooooooo at signing Cifti.

Booooooo at signing a quantifiable talent we’ve heard of.

Booooooo for not signing an exoticcally-named unknown whose exploits we have to look up on wikipedia and whose name makes us sound cool and knowledgable once we’ve spent three hours with the mirror trying to master the pronunciation.

Booooooo for not gambling at least five million on a 50-50 chance of an absolute dud.

    Boooooooo in general.

Astonishing gesture from Billy McNeill. Legend is a word tailor-made for him.

New striker will give us an additional attacking style option. Considering the lack of impact his predecessors made he cannot became worse!! Deserves a decent Celtic welcome and a fair crack of the whip.

Still expect that Ronny will have an eye to bring in a Scandinavian option to “bolster” the attack.

Bearing in mind how things work at CP, almost certainly dependant on us qualifying for group stages.

Understand that RD has previously declared he feels he has enough resources at hand to qualify?? Unless that was a misquote or an MSM fabrication?? Who knows for sure anymore.

    On Dukla game:

felt the team were either under orders not to get too involved and operating at 60% – hardly any pressing in evidence or working in groups. Or they failed to follow orders, or too many personnel changes to allow a cohesive unit to build up and operate/function effectively.

Have watched other teams being told to work at 60/80/90 in practice matches and might explain what we watched the other night? It was a practice match??

Losing 5 was pretty crappy, never easy to take. Less worried about that at this stage than others. Looking At our general play we were not value to be Taking 3 goals. So an unexpected wee bonus there :-)

Never really be a fan of pre-season friendlies. Can’t think of one I ever enjoyed. Too many subs and constantly disrupting the flow of the game.

Can’t see how Sociedad game will be much different.

The endless complaints relate to how the Celtic board has always been a vehicle for chancers to trouser all the perks they can get.

Like I said, ive been going to see Celtic for 45 years, and in all that time, ive never once met any board member.

They set themselves apart from the supporters.

Men in ivory towers….lording it over the club.

IMO….Celtic should be more democratic, we are run as though Celtic are the personal plaything of DD and PL.

And I don’t like that fact.

    We are Celtic…..never forget that.

  6. Deluding ourselves if we think we are a CL club. Europa League is our level now. The financial climate the club is operating in has seen to that. Our almost fanatical insistence of selling our best players at the first sign of a profit is soul destroying.

All under the guise of ‘Do you want to go the way of Sevco’ We have spent £3 million so far in transfers, on 4 players this summer. Received £2 million from the sale of Adam Matthews. A net spend of £1 million on players. If that is what our board consider an adequate investment to gain entry into the Champions League they are simply insulting every one of us.

    kitalba – Some perceive that their contribution is being squandered in material vanities at the expense of the quality of the football team that takes the park. I think people have a right to object to waste and hubris;

    ——————————————————————————————————————–

It’s a hard act to balance, I think when some see the improvements to the stadium they will puff their chests out with pride, I know the last time I was there a lot of people were walking round the stadium taking photo’s and the general feeling was that it was money well spent and long overdue.

On the other hand, if you ask the same people would they rather have a £6 – 8m striker instead of the improvements what would the answer have been ? Why can’t we do both probably…

  9. Same rubbish every pre-season by the same suspect supporters. Making one positive comment a season and finishing a post with hh doesn’t make you a Celtic supporter. Yes we all ideas of how we would do it differently but this should be done constructively and respectively to the club we support and it’s employees, who are all employed to try and make our club better. We could of beaten Dukla 7-0 and the same folk would spouting the same random nonsense. We are in good shape and improving. Friendlies are for fitness and experimenting. Back to lurking.

  10. Why abbreviate and make your post unreadable – when a few more letters will make it readable – please ALL stop the disease that is ABBREVIATION.

  17. What a pile of mind numbing negativity this morning.

As I have recently begun to do, I took a quick look at CQN this morning. Simply awful, bitter stuff.

What is particularly sad is that Winning Captains posted a link containing a real Celtic Story. A few folk commented on this. The vast majority were too busy, wrapped up in their own hatred. Some may not even know who the subject of the article was…..

Off to to do real life stuff on this beautiful, 30 degree morning……

  18. We have a poor recent record in signing Strikers. Hooper was the last decent purchase in that department. If Ciftci can get 25/30 goals per season in the SPFL, that will be good progress. I have reservations about his discipline but as Tony Donnelly said earlier, once he pulls on the Hoops, he is one of us and will get my 100% support.

He did well last year joint 2nd with Leigh in goal scoring charts Ciftci got 14 from a team total of 58, Leigh got his 14 from a team total of 84. As a percentage of team goals Ciftci’s 14 would have translated to 20 had he been playing for Celtic.

    ——————————————————————————————————–

I read the annual accounts – there is NO big ‘chunk’ of money lying in Reserves.

All that comes in goes out.

Extra comes from either Champions League, or borrowing.

Should we borrow £20 million every time we don’t qualify, or should we borrow £20 million in the hope of qualifying?

£20 million would get us ONE Champions League-type player for two seasons – when wages and fee are added up.

I think the most important thing about ciftci signing will be his effect on gms and Armstrong,

The three link up really well and interchange, and will create havoc in spl defences! Really would like a bustling centre forward as a plan b and would let stokes and scepovic go! Off to watch tennis now! Got a cheeky tenner on Anderson at 4/1 .

  24. Ciftci is a decent piece of business.

I have watched video highlights and he seems to have the raw tools.
