The Guidetti enigma

1242

I was asked to contribute a piece on John Guidetti to a German magazine last month.  John was on his way to winning the European U21 Championships with Sweden, while being every inch the football personality.  The German publisher wanted to know why Celtic, Stoke and Manchester City had decided against re-employing a striker with a flattering pedigree.

During last season it looked like John was destined for the English lower leagues, or perhaps one of the resting homes in Turkey, but a few weeks at a tournament later he’s won himself a five year deal with Celta de Vigo.

Guidetti is a better player than he looked at Celtic last season.  We don’t play a system which lends itself to a classic, British style, penalty box striker, which is what John is, but would you give him a five year contract to play in La Liga?  Of course not.  You’ve watched the player way more than Celta’s scouts and you know better than they do.

This is the truism in scouting, people who watch a player week-in, week-out, know vastly more than a scout who only gets to see a month’s games, or a handful of games across the season, or worse, a selection of DVDs provided by the agent, or TV highlights.

What’s made John Guidetti is his outlier season, 2011-12, when on loan at Feyenoord he smacked home an astonishing 20 goals in 23 games.  Without that season, the Celta scouts wouldn’t even know his name.  Maybe the serious illness he subsequently suffered robbed him of his mojo, maybe he’s a pound or two heavier than his fighting weight, but my money’s on Vigo suffering buyers regret soon enough.

The best of luck to John in Galicia, but I suspect he’ll be available for loan this time next year.

Sorry guys but your spouting keech.

Is Dave King a fit and proper person ? Yes or no.

Do we want an SFA that brings proper governance and is transparent ?

I do especially when Celtic paid employees are inviolved.

A rhetorical question. The TV deal that PL negotiated for them worked out pretty well for them at the expense of all other Scottish clubs.

I think we might know each other.

A few clues – Scottish conferences and a surprise ticket for Seville the Friday before the Final.

    Sound familiar?

Nope I have never seen him on YouTube however I refer you back to the blog of the 4 September last year.

There weren’t too many in here who had viewed him on said media raising any concerns regarding his supposed ego

I also imagine if we had supposedly been tracking him for 3 years someone within the Ub would have detected an ego problem

As it was,not the matters now, I did raise concerns at the time about the wisdom of taking on someone who was happy to have spent five years sitting in the Man City reserves and failed to secure a regular place in the first team squad

As it stands the player has exercised his freedom of choice not to ply his trade in a league which many now in the professional game regard as a footballing backwater

    So good luck to him

I think you know I was being facetious, however, by accident rather than design, PL has done us a favour.

you know the point i was making – none of us really know what happens in these meetings and what legal advice is given, we only know the outcome.

  9. H/T,

While it has been a bugbear for Celtic supporters forever and a day that other clubs put up their prices when we visit, I thought they were obliged to give us a certain percentage of the tickets. Is this still the case and are Aberdeen and Hearts flaunting the rule?

I suppose that ticket prices just like pub prices increase when there is a large demand for them

Dublin in February plenty of places you could purchase a guiness for just under the €5

The Tartan Army invade Dublin a few weeks back and you can’t get a Guiness for under €7

Anyway if we reach the Champions League Final at the end if the season how much would you be willing to fork out for a ticket

I imagine it would be a few bob dearer than the normal admission prices to the stadium

I believe it is still the case, and was written into league rules after that dead mob banned our fans from their hovel, but figure is only 5% of ground capacity ? I think (5% figure)

    Hail Hail

  17. WITS: Westmeath were poor but Dublin can only play the team in front of them. Dublin were not on form today, despite the score line, and on that performance would not win the All-Ireland. The Q/F will obviously be a sterner test. I still fancy them to get to the final. Whether they win it or not is another matter.

  18. parkheadcumsalford

I think you’re right but I think the percentage is actually very small (5%?) so they’re probably acting within the limitations.

I hope you’re enjoying your day sir.

  19. Big J, why did you have to jump in with your 2 big feet, I was getting to that bit :-))

I would like to see them being more clinical

Look at kilkenny hurlers, they don’t take their foot off the gas, they don’t rack up heaps of misses and wides. They are true champions

Dublin footballers can believe their own press sometimes.

They are miles ahead of most teams but it does them no favours to stroll around like that

Why even a deaf dumb and blind monkey like me could see that

I think most on here still have Celtic at their heart and I’ll never have a problem disagreeing with people like that. We’ll just differ on the best way to achieve a common goal.
