The Guidetti enigma

1242

I was asked to contribute a piece on John Guidetti to a German magazine last month.  John was on his way to winning the European U21 Championships with Sweden, while being every inch the football personality.  The German publisher wanted to know why Celtic, Stoke and Manchester City had decided against re-employing a striker with a flattering pedigree.

During last season it looked like John was destined for the English lower leagues, or perhaps one of the resting homes in Turkey, but a few weeks at a tournament later he’s won himself a five year deal with Celta de Vigo.

Guidetti is a better player than he looked at Celtic last season.  We don’t play a system which lends itself to a classic, British style, penalty box striker, which is what John is, but would you give him a five year contract to play in La Liga?  Of course not.  You’ve watched the player way more than Celta’s scouts and you know better than they do.

This is the truism in scouting, people who watch a player week-in, week-out, know vastly more than a scout who only gets to see a month’s games, or a handful of games across the season, or worse, a selection of DVDs provided by the agent, or TV highlights.

What’s made John Guidetti is his outlier season, 2011-12, when on loan at Feyenoord he smacked home an astonishing 20 goals in 23 games.  Without that season, the Celta scouts wouldn’t even know his name.  Maybe the serious illness he subsequently suffered robbed him of his mojo, maybe he’s a pound or two heavier than his fighting weight, but my money’s on Vigo suffering buyers regret soon enough.

The best of luck to John in Galicia, but I suspect he’ll be available for loan this time next year.

I agree. Fantastic highlights. I once watched the All Blacks beat Japan (?) about 145-0 in a World Cup game. The guy next to me, a big, normally dour bloke, said: If they show the highlights tonight, they`ll have t show the whole game.

Being the open-minded guy I am, I was willing to accept the POSSIBILITY that she thought it referred to Jock Wallace. I then read that she bought shares in Rangers and that they `were in her blood`. That would suggest the Wallace comment just might be a tad disingenuous 0:-)

Former Rangers owner Craig Whyte strikes again as investors who backed his company lose £2million

THE liquidator of the company has given up trying to get any money back after failing to recover any of the missing £2million.

INVESTORS who backed a company set up by former Rangers owner Craig Whyte have lost £2million.

The liquidator of Merchant Corporate Recovery (MCR) has given up trying to get back any of the money ploughed into the company.

The £2million was raised by selling 1000 investment bonds at £2000 each in 2009.

Whyte, 44, and fellow director James Holmes promised they would achieve returns of 9.75 per cent by taking over struggling companies and restructuring them to sell on.

But liquidator Ian Richardson, of Grant Thornton, has told creditors no money can be sourced from any of the seven firms the pair invested the money in.

    All seven went into liquidation.

Whyte and Holmes were both directors of three of the firms and Whyte a director of a fourth called Liberty Capital Limited – an offshore company based in the British Virgin Islands which received a £125,000 loan from MCR.

Richardson said in a liquidation notice published at Companies House: “Liberty was placed into liquidation on May 27, 2013, but the liquidators have no
information regarding this loan.”

Money was also put into a logistics group, three travel companies, a discounts firm, and a communications group.

One investor who put money in,
writing an online financial forum , said: “Several of these turnaround companies, all set up by the same people, have
disappeared in a puff of smoke. I too have lost a lot.”

Richardson has told investors they could apply to the Financial Services Compensation Scheme to try to recover their money.

  10. Good luck to the 7 Celts in court today and well done to FAC and our own HT for the work they do to support them.

It strikes me that in the vast majority of cases-if not all-the ‘offended’ witnesses for the prosecution are Police State Scotland. Either they are offended, due to bigotry and ignorance or they are under instructions to support this ridiculous law. This is a sad and dangerous state of affairs that can have far reaching consequences for these youngsters in the future. Everyone from Tom Devine, the writer of ROH Gerry O’Glacain and numerous lawyers have explained why this isn’t sectarian and yet supporters are still making court appearances.

It isn’t just us though and FAC are reaching out to other clubs supporters who have suffered.

On Police resources: There didn’t seem to be any issue at Paisley on Friday night – Plenty uniform officers; mounted police; film crews and plain clothes. All for a Celtic friendly.

John McGinn potentially off to Houston? What a shame.

Wish him the best but we ought to have had a punt on him. Put him out on loan.

4-4-2 did an article on it recently.

At Houston,he will team up with Giles Barnes. He’s still only 26 and a great young player who really struggled wi injury.

McGinn will love it and return a better player,IMO. Though he might love it too much to leave!

Lindsey Sharp is a product of her upbringing, and indoctrination by her family – it is shameful and sad.

The views of all those who engage in these evil, bigoted acts and sectarian rants, is learned behaviour, and it prolongs the crass traditions of the ‘dark ages’, which we ALL should have left behind.
