The Guidetti enigma

1242

I was asked to contribute a piece on John Guidetti to a German magazine last month.  John was on his way to winning the European U21 Championships with Sweden, while being every inch the football personality.  The German publisher wanted to know why Celtic, Stoke and Manchester City had decided against re-employing a striker with a flattering pedigree.

During last season it looked like John was destined for the English lower leagues, or perhaps one of the resting homes in Turkey, but a few weeks at a tournament later he’s won himself a five year deal with Celta de Vigo.

Guidetti is a better player than he looked at Celtic last season.  We don’t play a system which lends itself to a classic, British style, penalty box striker, which is what John is, but would you give him a five year contract to play in La Liga?  Of course not.  You’ve watched the player way more than Celta’s scouts and you know better than they do.

This is the truism in scouting, people who watch a player week-in, week-out, know vastly more than a scout who only gets to see a month’s games, or a handful of games across the season, or worse, a selection of DVDs provided by the agent, or TV highlights.

What’s made John Guidetti is his outlier season, 2011-12, when on loan at Feyenoord he smacked home an astonishing 20 goals in 23 games.  Without that season, the Celta scouts wouldn’t even know his name.  Maybe the serious illness he subsequently suffered robbed him of his mojo, maybe he’s a pound or two heavier than his fighting weight, but my money’s on Vigo suffering buyers regret soon enough.

The best of luck to John in Galicia, but I suspect he’ll be available for loan this time next year.

  1. No need to lose sleep over the boy Guidetti, he won’t lose any over us. An enigma? No. He was pretty transparent from the start, the fact that many of our supporters took him to to be more than he was is not his fault.

A good footballer, no more than that . Our craving for a new Henrick is not his fault, we need to look loser to home for that.

Re hearts and sheep tickets, play them at their own game.

If we normally get 3,500 for the sheep pen but they’ve slashed our allocation by x%, then give them the exact same percentage of tickets they request from us. Do the same to the mini huns. Eff them.

  4. ipaddy…,

I expect they rarely take up the full percentage they are offered never mind cutting it.

Scottish football is being ran for firstly the benefit of Sevco first and Celtic’s profitability second by Celtic employees with their Celtic hat on. Sleekitly and against the words spojen by our high priest lets call him a profit rather than a lord his prophecies are obviouskly pish. Dr. John Reid.

Ipaddy, I don’t have a problem with them cutting allocations, if they have been able to sell these seats to their own fans. Scottish football is stronger when teams can get bigger crowds of season ticket holders.

Aberdeen wanted a bigger allocation from us last season. We said no. But we were wrong, in my view. Why on earth would a club deliberately leave a ticket unsold? 2,000 or 4,000 visiting fans would make little difference, when we have 40,000 of our own there.

Same thing when we are fixing to clinch a league title, and the home team (motherwell, killie, whoever) refuses to sell us more tickets – even leaving the park half full. Something awfully wrong with that.

I think it should be an SPFL rule that (safety, segregation aside), no ticket should be withheld from a willing buyer.

    Just my 2 cents….

The league rules of 5%mean we have to give 3000 whereas 5% of 18000 is 900 so we would get even less I think we have to go with it until they can’t fill their stadiums and will want to increase our quota to make money. I’m not 100 % on the 5 % maybe someone here knows better H H

  17. WITS: I don’t disagree. My brother is over from Canada and couldn’t believe how easily Dublin beat Kildare. Dublin were clinical and awesome in that game but there was a lot of unforced errors and wasteful play today. I’m just putting it down to an off day. I was in the upper tier of The Cusack Stand and like the team, I thought Hill 16 was very quiet today.

    HAMPDEN IN THE SUN

Oh Hampden in the sun, Celtic 7 Rangers 1,

That was the score when it came time up,

The Timalloys had won the cup.

I see Tully running down the line,

He slips the ball past Valentine,

It’s nodded down by ‘Teazy Weazy’,

And Sammy Wilson makes it look so easy.

    I see Mochan beating Shearer,

The League Cup is coming nearer,

He slams in an impossible shot,

The Rangers team has had their lot.

Over comes a very high ball,

Up goes McPhail above them all,

The ball and Billy’s head have met,

A lovely sight the ball is in the net.

Young Sam Wilson has them rocked,

But unluckily his shot was blocked,

Then big Bill with a lovely lob,

Makes it look such an easy job.

Now here is Mochan on the ball,

He runs around poor Ian McColl

Wee George Niven takes a daring dive,

But Smiler Mochan makes it number five.

Down the middle runs Billy McPhail,

With John Valentine on his tail,

With a shot along the ground,

The cup’s at Parkhead safe and sound.

Here comes Fernie, cool and slick,

He ambles up to take the kick,

He hits it hard and low past Niven,

The Tims are in their Seventh Heaven

I think you’re missing the point mate. For years these clubs have been willing to sell us as many tickets as they can but now they’re looking at cutting allocations which leaves many fans, who financially supported their clubs for years, unable to obtain tickets.

It occurred to me earlier that amongst all the articles criticising Celtic for hoovering up the best talent from our rivals (4 in 5 years is it)I must have missed the equivalent newsprint pointing out Aberdeen’s similar bullying of their lesser rivals with 3 ‘stolen’ this summer alone..

Aberdeen’s closest rivals ICT ‘shorn’ of Shinnie and not even a fee, St Mirren losing Kenny Maclean for a pittance and Paul Quinn joining from Ross County.. But of course Derek McInnes is one of the MSM’s own isn’t he.

Just goes to show that, even in the US, Rangers have got it in for Selleck.

  23. Interesting times, dangerous times. The recent UK budget and the Greek government is an interesting paradox.

Could we, be as bolshy as the Greek people and tell Gideon to feck off? I feel his careful timing fo the cuts will let him drip feed the cuts. By the time we , or the great unwashed as he sees us , get active it will be too late.

    Canamalar,

Sure nothing to be had at HRMC. Three cited all scots. Looks like a political decision has been agreed upon. A compromise edging the ball a bit closer and placing it within a Scottish context. Suits the SNPs austerity mantra and huns voted No. Tories can choose to remain selective.
