The kind of Armageddon that buys you a meal, takes you to a show & onto a nightclub

738

As far as Armageddons go, this one will surely be known as the Amiable Nursemaid of all Armageddons.  The kind that not so much wipes everyone out, but buys them a meal, then takes them to a show and onto a nightclub.

Sky has renewed their deal to cover the Scottish Premier League after Our Man sorted them out yesterday.  They will show a handful of Scottish Football League games as part of the deal, a nice quid-pro-quo for SPL clubs for their annual contribution to the lower leagues.

Delicious irony: those SFL rights are worth more to each SPL club than they are to any SFL club.

Chief harbinger of doom, Neil Doncaster, will, on the one hand, be relieved that there is still income to pay his wages.  On the other hand, he must surely be embarrassed at the spectacularly in accurate scenario he portrayed to SFL clubs, and to several people in the media.  Did he embark on a flamboyant bluff or did he simply not know what he was talking about?

Remember, why we are here in the first place… Our good causes this year are The Haven Centre in Blantyre, Oscar Knox Neuroblastoma Appeal, Martin Chambers Ecuador Trust and Aberdour Primary School Parents’ Association.

We have already distributed over £2000 thanks to the sale of a Joseph Gormley painting back in April. We have two further fantastic paintings by Joseph; one of Scott Brown and one of Henrik Larsson. We also have a wonderful signed Neil Lennon print by the artist Gary Brandham.

The items are being raffled on ebay right now for the price of a £1 ticket. Winners will be drawn at the CQN Open on Friday night. There will be further raffles and auctions on Friday night with some excellent golfing and other sporting activities been donated by the Celtic family. Perhaps the pick is a limited edition canvas print of John Thomson, donated by the John Thomson Memorial Committee. There are only 22 of these in the entire world, representing the 22 years of John’s life.

This is a unique opportunity to win three great pieces of Celtic memorabilia, items which would normally be pushed out of the reach of most people at auction. Tickets cost £1, buy as many as you like, but participate. This is what your club is all about!

  1. Given our now normal unpreparedness for a European qualifier, any victory tonight will be a good result. Any victory and a clean sheet an excellent result. Can’t see where the big win optimism is coming from, a shaky defence and shot shy forwards in pre season shows we are not ready for such a big game. But that’s Scottish football, as Lenny said we need to start our season a lot earlier so when these games come around we have 3 or 4 competitive games under our belts. That’s what league recostruction talks should be discussing, not how quickly can we get Newco back into top division.

    2-1 Celtic (Commons & Forrest)

We’ll then get a draw at least next week.

Where abouts are you sitting tonight? Just so I know whether or not to ask a frinedly steward if I can move seats.

I’m as excited for this game as I have been for any Euro qualifier even during the O’Neill and Strachan years. Bursting to get to the stadium and start the Celtic Park thunder.

Looking forward to watching tonights game on CTV.

Got to go out and keep it tight but not be too cautious, reminded of the Utrecht game in 2010, two first half goals them seemed to be happy to settle with that 2-0 lead in the second half when we could have went on to score more.

Regretted that in the away game where the team deemed to not need strengthened before the deadline went away and made a pigs ear of it, with Hooiveld and Majstorovic in central defence.

Id settle for 4-0 right now.

I’m a Celtic fan from the cradle to the grave but

It only goes to show that many people still don’t get it.

This is not simply about a football team which has shamed us all. This is about a social condition pervading the depths of Scotland. A social disease which has blighted the development of a country which claims to be proud of its heritage.

Proud on the surface but when the truth is revealed we should be rightly ashamed.

Scottish society has at its heart its own form of apartheid. It is more subtle than the forms exhibited in South Africa and in USA, but it is there nonetheless.

If the demise of RFC leads to an improvement in the mindset of Scottish society, fantastic. However, I have yet to see any real evidence that the influential members of Scottish society have altered any.

  12. Celtic midfielder Joe Ledley is keen to see the Scottish Football Association consider a switch to summer football to help clubs in European competition.

The Parkhead club kick off their season tonight with a crucial Champions League qualifier against HJK Helsinki and take on a team that is already in top form.

Halfway through their domestic season, HJK thumped KR 9-1 in the previous round and Ledley says Celtic could benefit from playing through the summer.

“If it is going to help us with the Champions League then yes, but it obviously down to the Scottish FA to sort that out,” he said.

“The other teams have got an advantage because they are halfway through their season so it would be nice to get a couple of games under our belt going into the qualifiers.

“It will be difficult but our fitness levels are high.”

I’m with Joe on this one. Summer football is the way forward for Scottish football, at least trial it for 4-5 years

  13. The question is, what Celtic will turn up tonight?

The team that blew sides away in the league.

Or the impostors who flopped in the league cup final and Scottish Cup final.

I think we will win the match tonight but fear we will concede at least one goal – don’t we always.

  14. NEILMCCALLUMLENNON on

Can anyone tell me if the game is on in Oz tomorrow am? Also is the game on Celtic TV for overseas subscribers.

    Many thanks

  15. I think one of the concerns the club has re. Season ticket holders is not how many we have at the start of the season but how many we will have mid season.

Many supporters buy their ticket on an installments plan and it not uncommon for people to give up during the season.

I would be interested to know how much ‘wastage’ we have had in previous seasons.

I doubt Lawwell would have issued his statement last week had he not have genuine concerns about ticket sales. Paul67’s repeated call to arms is telling as well.

Personally I bought my ticket as soon as I received my renewal letter. My support is not, has not and never will be conditional upon what happens to the Huns.

Unfortunately not all Celtic fans think that way.

Your figures dont add up You mention how much Lenny has spent but fail to mention how much we brought in

Celtic did not spend a penny in Lenny first year as it was all financed by Aiden Mick Barry Arthur Hoovield etc

2nd Lenny is on record as saying he never paid more than 1.3 k on any player ( pre Bangura)

3rd we recieved 1.6m from Europa league 500k from Southampton for getting into EPLwith Hoovield we SOLD Juarez and Rasmussan as well as losing at least 10 players off wage bill

So considering we have consistently sold 45k season tickets and all the new merchandise we launched i argue that to wait to see is wrong

I thought our aim nay ever teams aim was to improve, grow and thus giving us the chance to improve on previous season

We plainly havent done this and i believe we are showing a real lack of ambition by not strengthening to give us better chance of getting to Cl group

I really hope we get to group stages but we have lessened our chances by not giving manager the players he clearly wanted and needed

How anyone can make a judgement on atmosphere on the basis of a few pre-season friendlies is beyond me.

Friendlies nearly always disappointed me with the atmosphere but even more so in the summer when many are away and crowds are inevitably down.

Reserve judgement until the season proper gets underway.

  24. Bhoys, CQN has a solid history of dealing with the message rather than the messenger. Sometimes, however, Internet bampots like us do get a bit focused on the journo rather than the newsprint.

Say what you like about Spiers, should we not analyse the article rather than the man?

Should Celtic comfortably beat HJK? Yes. Is there a nervousness that we won’t? Yes. Are the PLC bean counters worried about the financial fallout from the demise of them? Yes. Does the demise of them with consequent loss of income increase the importance of CL football? Yes. If we don’t beat HJK, will there be discontent? Yes. I

Don’t get me wrong, I avidly have supported the proper punishment of them and parity of treatment for all potential SFL applicants. I believe Sevco/The Rangers have unfairly been accommodated in the proposed admission to SFL3. They shouldn’t yet be near the SFL without proper vetting, accounting and accountability for past misdeeds.

Much of the article is correct and not particularly controversial. Let’s focus on the game and the reality that we will have to increasingly plough our own furrow in the absence of an escape from the SPL. This ideally required investment in a centre back and striker before now. Assuming we beat HJK, it is imperative that we do not repeat the mistakes of 1988 and 1998. Let us move from a position of strength to maintain and increase our European profile so that those who might emphasise the negative will in future be forced to write about the continued success of our 125 year old club.

  26. Snake Plissken on

I see the Daily Record have (as usual and completely to form) claimed that the TV deal that is now on off is costing the clubs 17M pounds in a bid to frighten people and continue to evoke an atmosphere of uncertainty and fear while at the same time trying to offer it as proof that the baw’s burst without Sevco in the top league.

Now while the figures may be accurate what this lovely open minded report does not state is exactly how much the clubs are due to get on an individual basis (for placement in the league) and it does not show what they are getting at the moment under the current deal.

If they actually showed that figure then it is likely that we would get a far better picture of how this new TV deal works and the amount of losses that clubs are likely or actually would suffer.

    The record says:

Last year Sky and the country’s leading clubs had settled on £80m over five years but the contracts were never signed. And it’s believed the deal will give the SPL only £63m over a similar period.

When you say “it is believed” it means you don’t even have your facts and when you don’t have the facts then you are in fact running a story with no merit and with such a slant, you are trying to cause trouble.

If it is 63M for the SPL as the article claims it would break down as 12.6M a year for broadcast coverage. This means 1.05M for each club if the money is distributed equally as it should be in my view.

The previously unsigned deal broke down this way:

    80M for 5 years

    16M a season

The top two getting the most money from this deal designed for Celtic and Dead Parrot FC to get the biggest pot (from a bloody pittance anyway)

The other clubs roughly getting 1.4M each

Now IF my assessment is accurate the other clubs could be losing a few hundred grand from the change of TV deal but in fact under the current deal they will at least be able to sustain themselves as they currently do not get (as I understand it) as much as 1M pounds a year based on the deal Scottish football got from Sky after the collapse of Setanta.

Now the MSM could in fact have looked at what the clubs get now and compare it what they are going to get and what they have missed out on for a fair and balanced (sorry for using the Fox news slogan) article which deals in all the facts – not just those which fit the we’re all doomed garbage which has been rammed down everyone’s throats for months.

As Bill Maher likes to say on Real time with Bill Maher – NEW RULE

    Leave Predictions to the Soothsayers:

If you predicted that there would be NO TV DEAL without a certain ex-football club in the top flight, if you battered this out on Radio shows and columns for months and months and if previously you told us the vote would put them back in the SPL, that bank managers would force SPL chairmen into accepting a filthy tax dodging cheating football club who defrauded everyone in Scotland for AT LEAST ONE season (which has been proven to keep Darryl King’s head from exploding) which in turn cost all the other football clubs in the league better prize money for one season alone (until the rest is proven) and probably many more millions over a period of God knows how many years and if you told us that it was a small group of internet bampots who were pushing the agenda and that real fans really wanted to see their town/stadium visited by the dregs of Scottish society because their money was SOOOOOOOOOO vital to the future of every other club in the top league while 30 SFL clubs can get by without them and none of them have gone bust apart from Airdrie who were closed down because of the old club’s previous owner telling them it was “just business”………..

Then you need to stop making predictions.

You told us none of the things that have happened in the last few months would ever come to pass and each and every thing predicted by the internet bampots (but not really predicted because the projections were based in fact not hearsay) has come to pass.

In the week where a genuine source of information and journalism switched off his/her Laptop for good, the Scottish media have embarrassed themselves by their ineptitude, inaction and sheer naked open support of something that was for so long their meal ticket or a habit they could not break that their credibility has fallen through the floor.

The TV while far from perfect is not Armageddon, doomsday or the end.

Save those words for a liquidated football club and its halfwit support who still think they are alive.

Only Doctor Who can regenerate and be the same as he ever was, everything else is subject to the rules of real life and a quick glance a companies house website tells you all you want to know – it is a new company and a new club because they entered financial meltdown and they went to the wall.
