The leap to management. Nervy few days ahead

239

The leap from player to manager is difficult.  Talents which maintained your career on the field, like technique, fitness and an ability to follow team instructions, mean nothing.  Instead, you are required to support, develop and discipline players who work in a constant state of flux.  You need to understand and work within budgets, and you know that a few bad results will see grown men yell obscenities at you to compensate for whatever inadequacy they have (they are always there).

So why wouldn’t Scott Brown want to manage Ayr United?  Setting all the negatives aside, Scott needs to do something to get him through the days, months and years ahead.  Being retired and wealthy in your thirties must be great, but what gets you out of bed and going in the morning?  The novelty of hair care will soon fade.

His one full season in charge of Fleetwood Town ended with a respectable midtable finish, but the current campaign started disastrously and Scott was hooked six games in.  Things did not improve for Fleetwood who are bottom of League One without a win in 13 games.

Ayr are a different challenge.  A win over bottom side Arbroath last night, with Scott watching from the stand, saw them move out of the relegation play-off place.  Next up they have the monied Queens Park, who now occupy that play-off spot.  Their campaign could pivot before Scott has time to learn all the player’s names.

For Celtic, it would be helpful to foster good relations with another Scottish club.  Our fringe players benefit from loans in the hands of a manager who knows our systems and where they can be watched every game by a Celtic coach.  Hopefully we’ll see a couple make the journey before the month is out.

We’ll discuss Matt O’Riley tomorrow.  Celtic’s face is set to stone to any club asking about him.  It will be a nervy few days, nonetheless.

Has there ever been an occasion Celtic and the huns are still in a round, that Viaplay chose not to show the games and pick a none ‘OF’ game 🤔

Figured it was Brown of Spurs but Blavklaw was a bit of a punt as I only knew he was a Scottish international keeper from early 60s.

No idea of his first name or team.

I remember the game,Bill Brown very good keeper,Adam Blacklaw (3 caps).Waiting for the only player with a Scots connection to have won an Oscar,as supplied by St,Stivs.

who asked you anyway ……only joking! honestly,if I was in your company I would let you buy me a drink.

  6. “Rangers have made an approach to Twente in a bid to land left-back Gjis Smal this month after the 26-year-old decided against signing a new multi-year contract with the Dutch club. (Voetbal International)”

“Rangers hold a significant interest in Twente left-back Gjis Smal, but a deal for the 26-year-old is not yet over the line. (TeamTalk)”

“Rangers have no interest in signing Dutch left-back Gijs Smal despite reports suggesting the Ibrox club had made an approach for the Twente 26-year-old.”

The above appear, in that order, on the BBC `gossip` site today.

I think they offer good reason why ALL `gossip` in the MSSM should be ignored,

Unfortunately, too many CQNers do not share that view.

Agree the SMSM do talk a load of 💩 however the first two may be plausible and the third because money became involved 😀

  8. An Dun,

I will happily give you the benefit of the doubt, and say,I dont think you are as dumb as your last two posts make you seem. Its what happens when you have agendas locked solid in your brain.

  9. If a player wants to leave Celtic because their agent presents them with a move to a bigger stage with bigger money, then they will surely leave. The mindset is that this kind of of opportunity may not arise again, and/or serious injury may occur at any time, so take the opportunity whilst it’s on offer. It is understandable, although unpalatable to supporters.

In my opinion Celtic can ill-afford to lose any top players during this window. However if the above situation transpires, getting the very best deal possible is the only viable alternative. These days keeping an unhappy player to his contract is not on, and everyone knows it.

Unfortunately with plying our trade in Scotland, successful players like MOR, Abada & CCV are easily affordable for almost all in the top two divisions in England, and the likes of top clubs in Spain.

Of course all the headlines may well be claptrap from Scottish media outlets, we all know they’re capable.

Getting into the second half of the season with our current squad intact must be seen as a ‘result’. If there are further additions during the next week, so much the better.

  10. MOR on loan !!!!!!!

    Abaca to championship !!!!!!!!

These are the stories,a good few posters knickers are shipping more water than the Titanic about.

SMSM laughing at you,and rightly so.

Game was before I was interested in football.

Names I became aware of a few years later.

  12. To lose Liel and Matt during the windae would obviously weaken the squad as we compete for a League and Cup double. Matt has a good chance of competing at the Euros in Germany in the summer, will certainly make the squad. And if Liel was to go the likes of Southampton he could be playing in the EPL next season. They are our players though and both possess a bit of the quality that Brendan keeps going on about. Only a striker would add to our squad, and Kohn could be that player, or even Rocco Vata if Brendan thinks he is up to it. Might be. As for bringing in a goalie and a left back that’s for the birds. In the summer as Champs, different scenario.

  13. Aaaarrrggghhhh, fek sake, just had a nightmare that the Transfer Window had closed.Mrs TB calmed me down saying another week to go.Why the angst..Knows nothing about football, but is intelligent.

    AT 😂😂

Started to be aware of what football / Celtic was around 1963 but didn’t start going regularly to Celtic Park until 65/66 season.

Have a vivid memory of the excitement around the 65 cup final.
