The leap to management. Nervy few days ahead

239

The leap from player to manager is difficult.  Talents which maintained your career on the field, like technique, fitness and an ability to follow team instructions, mean nothing.  Instead, you are required to support, develop and discipline players who work in a constant state of flux.  You need to understand and work within budgets, and you know that a few bad results will see grown men yell obscenities at you to compensate for whatever inadequacy they have (they are always there).

So why wouldn’t Scott Brown want to manage Ayr United?  Setting all the negatives aside, Scott needs to do something to get him through the days, months and years ahead.  Being retired and wealthy in your thirties must be great, but what gets you out of bed and going in the morning?  The novelty of hair care will soon fade.

His one full season in charge of Fleetwood Town ended with a respectable midtable finish, but the current campaign started disastrously and Scott was hooked six games in.  Things did not improve for Fleetwood who are bottom of League One without a win in 13 games.

Ayr are a different challenge.  A win over bottom side Arbroath last night, with Scott watching from the stand, saw them move out of the relegation play-off place.  Next up they have the monied Queens Park, who now occupy that play-off spot.  Their campaign could pivot before Scott has time to learn all the player’s names.

For Celtic, it would be helpful to foster good relations with another Scottish club.  Our fringe players benefit from loans in the hands of a manager who knows our systems and where they can be watched every game by a Celtic coach.  Hopefully we’ll see a couple make the journey before the month is out.

We’ll discuss Matt O’Riley tomorrow.  Celtic’s face is set to stone to any club asking about him.  It will be a nervy few days, nonetheless.

  1. Hibs know the score …and they know 2 certainties ..when you play Rangers at Easter rd ..you are playing 14 ( plus VAR) …when you play us ..you play 11 and you are positively assisted by officials ..and they adjust their game and expectations accordingly

    100% agree with you

Some other teams have that same attitude against us .

The amount of space for both teams amazed me ……

3 points closer and closing the goals gap too …..

Let’s get back to firing on all cylinders and Kyogo buries a bigger percentage of chances created for him .

  7. As I said earlier in the week, scum will beat most teams in the league, nothing we can do about that, other than gubWe them, which we have done.Don’t expect that to change. This Celtic team will not be stopped.A couple of weeks we will have a bench full of starters,to back up the formidable 11 on the park.

Dont be fooled by the Ibrox noise, the media,we have heard it all before.

  8. Good morning all from a very, very mild Garngad.

We knew this day would come when MO would attract other teams but we should be starting bidding at 25million in THE SUMMER.

Reluctantly if Mikey J would like to go now then I will drive him to the airport myself even if he is only going to Hibs I will still drive him to the airport..

Now get the finger out Cellic and get a striker and LB, keeper can wait to summer.

  9. Transfer window profile : The wonder kid who is still a kid !

Thursday, 25th Jan 2024 08:15 by Keith Haynes

At twenty years of age Karamoko Dembélé has found a home in Brest, France having signed a four year contract on a free transfer from Celtic in the summer of 2022. The fact he managed to get a good deal at Stade Brestois 29 after a disappointing end to nine years at Celtic is commendable. It displayed a determination to succeed from a young man who was out in the cold at the time.

Surprisingly, Karamoko featured just once for his club in August this season with two inclusions on the bench. He had a better run of it the previous season with fourteen appearances from the bench and was involved throughout the season. Unfortunately he contributed no goals or assists. This season and before the summer transfer deadline ended he was put out on loan at Blackpool, this has seen him flourish in league one. He has featured in the squad for twenty three games so far with fourteen starts and eight assists. He has found the net twice. You may have seen him put away a goal assisted by Kyle Joseph last week in the FA Cup against Nottingham Forest.

Despite his 5’7” height he does possess pace and awareness on the football field. He played just the one game for Celtic but had a decent number of opportunities to impress at Brest. It didn’t seem to work out. He’s young and being in a strange country could well have affected his overall confidence, it’s hard to say. He does deny this and states he loves the country and culture. Kieran Devlin writing in the Athletic stated in 2020 ‘ More importantly, I’ve been told by multiple sources there are worries over his application and attitude. This is why he’s not part of the first-team picture when he was originally planned to be more involved this year, with hopes he might even be James Forrest’s understudy on the right-wing.’

Scottish football journalists still follow Karamoko and often report on his success at Blackpool. He was once described as a potential to have all the assets to play at the very top of the European game. Kevin Graham from ‘A Celtic state of mind’ explains. “He was a generational talent. And I’m maybe gonna say something here that people will probably slaughter me for, but I’m going to say it anyway. And I don’t think it’s daft. If Delia or Rodgers were the manager of the club, Karamoko Dembele would have been a first team regular the now.”

It’s possible the talent that Karamoko seemed to have at thirteen has been wasted, and that concerns many even today. Looking in to his profile it’s very clear the attitude has been wrong and his application poor. However, that seems to have sorted itself out this season. Maturity perhaps ? At thirteen years of age he was playing in the Celtic U20 side, yes thirteen. Everything he did turned to gold. But at eighteen he couldn’t even get Celtic to offer him anything at all to stay. They had made their mind up. Their final straw came when his attitude impinged on training issues and that was that. Even Ange Postecoglou when Celtic manager came in for a bit of stick from Karamoko. When asked why Ange didn’t fancy him in the first team he replied, “A lot of reasons that I can not say, but I think the manager didn’t really like the way I played or saw something that was missing in my game.

We have to look at the positives as well, this young player is at last enjoying his football and wants to prove himself in the professional game. This season to date may well be the catalyst for Karamoko, but he has to convince a lot of people. Clubs from the Championship have been taking note, nothing has been completed though. It would involve a recall to Brest and then another loan at least unless of course a club can match the value of the player, which isn’t high. He needs development and he needs to feel he is wanted, that’s for sure. He will either be the new Leon Knight or as many expected when he was skipping through defences on YouTube a new Messi !

  10. PRESTONPANS BHOYS

if the penalty had been given and went to V.A.R if would have been disallowed as it was a foul on the Rangers defender …

    As we know !

  11. Paul’s right. If we cannot shift some players on in this window, loan them out to Broony if they are not involved in the managers plans.Frame, etc, would be better in the Championship than the Central League.

  12. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Good morning CQN.

Damp and gloomy where I am … but that’s just the weather.

Another grand day to be a Celt.

The next bit is long winded. Feel free to scroll on by.

Transfer window closes in 6½ days time.

Rightly or wrongly I’ve set my expectations.

I think we’ll bring in zero or one more players.

If that is so, I suspect that will be a disappointment (and possibly even a concern) to some.

    Understood.

My purely personal point of view?

I’m comfortable with it and can live with it.

(Like everyone else I enjoy new faces arriving).

As for comparisons with last year’s squad strength?

We lost a wide man (Jota), a CB (Carl) and a midfielder (Aaron).

In terms of wide men I hoped (and previously posted) that the combination of Palma and an improving Yang might offset Jota’s departure.

To be clear – neither would replace his individual skill level but between them they could contribute the same numbers.

I can see now that Yang isn’t quite as ready I had hoped.

If Kuhn and Palma can carry Jota’s load ?

.. And Liel stays fit? .. I think we’re covered.

At Centre Back – for me it’s more simple.

In the eyes of some, Carl The Unloved became Carl The Essential as soon as he left.

IF … we keep CCV, Maik, Stephen and Scales fit? I see no reduction in CB capacity or capability.

Midfield is interesting. Aaron was a serious short term bonus but, let’s be clear, he often struggled with fitness.

Despite that his numbers were good … I think he had 12 goal involvements last season?

Plus, he was great at controlling midfield.

IF … Reo stays fit, Bernardo continues to perform, Matt stays and Odin chips in?

With Calum running the show I think our midfield’s capacity and capability is easily as good as last season.

In terms of departures obviously I hope we can move some fringe players on.

In practical terms it will allow Brendan and his new coach to work with better numbers.

I get the impression BR just wants to get on with it with a fit squad.

That fit squad is key. If we keep most of our players fit I believe we’ll win the league.

Next areas of squad to address in priority order (again IMHO)

    1. Striker (we simply need another body)

    2. Left full back (we need competition)

    3. Keeper (to eventually replace Joe)

If we get #1 this window? Great.

#1 and #2 this window? Hurrah.

Otherwise they can wait until summer along with #3.

  13. When Ange came in we needed a complete rebuild. We sold 2 of his players last summer and I expect O’Riley and CCV to go this summer. This board will find any half decent offer for any of our players to be irresistible It hasn’t taken them long to dismantle Ange’s treble winning team.

I think lawwell wants rid of Brendan. How to get rid of popular and successful managers. Don’t back them. We have previous in this matter. Stein, big Billy, Hay, Jansen, O’Neil, Strachan and Brendan, first time round.

  14. Back to basics,

The striker everyone wants.I keep saying this is a problem. The reason Gio left, but no one listens. If he is quality,he won’t come to sit on a bench. Its a fact,so just to keep chanting that mantra won’t change anything.

BR knows this.Maybe, just maybe, the reason he wanted Khun.He can play anywhere across the front 3.A front 3 of Abada,Kuhn,Palma,in case of injury to Kyogo,,looks far too strong for this league in the meantime.

The Keeper will be a summer signing.

Still a week to go.Let’s see.

  15. There’s no point in wasting money on players who won’t improve us in Europe, but would be interesting to see who we have been looking at in this Window. Heads down, work hard ,stick together, sure will be a massive summer coming up,to back the manager.

  16. Westcraigs,

When was the last time we pushed any player out the door?.Ange knew the score,BR knows it too.If any player wants to go,and the offer suits, you cannot stop him.Trebling, maybe more, his wages, who would. Its the only way we can operate.Ange sold the RB after 2 years, nobody else.If you do know any player we sold ,when he wanted to stay, name them.Sick listening to this Urban Myth.

  17. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

Westcraigs – we lost 3 effective contributors from Ange’s treble winning squad.

    One retired due to injury

One was transferred for a record fee

    One simply wanted to leave

That is not a “dismantle”. Not even close.

How would you have handled the three cases?

  18. Every season I’m left underwhelmed at our transfer activity …..

Can’t fault our efforts in the league and cups , the results are there for all to see through the years …..how much progress have we made in Europe in the same period …..

The board and Manager(s) have the same ambition for Europe , lets (the Board) show some Intent !

Fans now know the timescales we can celebrate our stars (2 poss 3 years)….players make bonds/partnerships on and off the field only to be broken up on the cusp of producing something in Europe .
