The loss of our greatest living legend

1049

Sean Fallon was known as The Iron Man, a hard left back at a time when pretty much all footballers were hard.  I met him and his wife Myra at their home a few months ago to prepare an interview in advance of his autobiography, which is due for release soon, the hard-man reputation could not have been further from the character of the person.

He was the most generous spirited man I have been in the company of for years.  Myra is a force of nature, unquestionably the wind in his sails.  You have never met a happier couple.

The stories he told about how Celtic were transformed from a sporting irrelevance into one of the most powerful and feared clubs in Europe were incredible.  His story was one of huge and dramatic achievement.  You and I are the beneficiaries.

The players he signed are legendary.  Kenny Dalglish, who was in tears in Sean’s home the night he agreed to go to Liverpool, Danny McGrain, a person Sean could not speak highly enough about, and countless more.  He was a committed Celtic man but took no pleasure in the death of Rangers, such was his generosity of spirit.

Sean described Jock, himself and Sir Robert Kelly as a three man team who had the vision to drive Celtic forward.  He believed that when Sir Robert died in 1971 the club’s loss was significant. Nothing was the same again.

His own parting from Celtic, in 1975, was far from satisfactory, but if he told me once, he told me 10 times, “I don’t want a single word said against Celtic”.  The club that you and I recognise is the creation of Jock, Sean and Sir Robert.  They transformed an amateurish football club into a legendary movement.  He, more than anyone I ever met, never wanted a figurative goal scored against this legend.

Today we have lost one of the architects of all we hold dear, a man who achieved the Miracle of Lisbon.  His insights reach back into the depths of our character.  His decision to author an autobiography is a gift to you and me.  I’ll share many of his anecdotes between now and when it’s published.

My sincere condolences to Myra, son Sean and all the family.  We have lost the man who was our greatest living legend but they have lost a great husband, father and grandfather.  A remarkable life has come to an end.

Says all you need to know about one of our greatest. My God he gave us so much and did so with humility, dedication and a real and lasting love for the club.

A great man and a Celtic Great.

  2. I thought it was commonly accepted by us that Big Jock’s move from our manager was not handled very well by the board. Just look at THAT famous picture. Why is it unreasonable to think that same Board would have been any kinder to Sean? Sometimes a critical comment is justified. Stephen Sullivan did spend a lot of time at CP while on the Celtic View.

Just a tad-I’d forgotten how good my Mum is at those withering looks of disdain.

Just as well I stayed at my sister’s last Saturday, haha!

  4. Bada bing- yes some kind of control is needed. Neil handles them well but all they need is one wee chink in the armour.

I would assume post press articles are monitored for accuracy, and offenders dealt win appropriately?

Pf Ayr- Much the same inane question only worded differently, on the lines of

“What did Mo’s goal mean to him”

“How has the loan period helped Mo”

“Is Mo in the frame for a start”

“You are Swedish, are they surprised back home he has not done better at Celtic”

    Ad nauseum.

  5. Rest in Peace Sean Fallon

For wonderful servants like Mr Fallon a minutes applause …a rousing one …is IMO a great way to celebrate the life of a hero ….

  8. We’ll raise the roof for Sean today and rightly so. On occasion a minutes silence is a wonderful, poignant tribute but I’m afraid the visitors today have a history of disrespect on these occasions.

  9. Sun shining, game against a team I loathe more than Sevco AND Juve ticket just delivered.

  10. Minute’s applause

    18.01.2013

Hearts would like to inform supporters travelling to Celtic Park tomorrow that there will be a minute’s applause before the match to celebrate the life of Celtic great Sean Fallon.

Fallon, assitant to Jock Stein and responsible for bringing in such players as Tommy Gemmell, Kenny Dalglish and Danny McGrain, passsed away in the early hours of this morning.

The club would like to take this opportunity to pass on its condolonces to the family of Sean and everyone connected with Celtic.

Supporters are reminded that referee Iain Brines will begin the minute’s applause prior to kick-off and would encourage supporters to represent Heart of Midlothian in the best possible manner.

In recent interviews with Sean Fallon note that he kept using one phrase– namely that “it was most important………” and then various things would follow from those words buy always to do with the well being of the club, the fans of the club, the image and the history of the club and so on.

All these things were things that he stressed by repeatedly using that phrase— in all that was what was “most important” about the man. His sense of value, his sense of decency, his sense of the common good.

There is a lesson there for all of us.

CFC treated both Messrs Fallon and Stein shabbily that is the reality …the fact that neither held any animus is to their credit.

First part:You express your opinion as fact.

Second part:Probably true, but how would you know whether Sean and Jock held any animus? Are you or were you privy to their inner thoughts?

The point I make is simple.

The scribe describes Celtic`s treatment of Sean as “shabby.”

The timing of the criticism of Celtic is inappropriate in the extreme.

    Viz. our conversation .

    One question.

Which lover of Celtic does not defend his club when the media describes them as “shabby?”

    To absent friends.
