The loss of our greatest living legend

1049

Sean Fallon was known as The Iron Man, a hard left back at a time when pretty much all footballers were hard.  I met him and his wife Myra at their home a few months ago to prepare an interview in advance of his autobiography, which is due for release soon, the hard-man reputation could not have been further from the character of the person.

He was the most generous spirited man I have been in the company of for years.  Myra is a force of nature, unquestionably the wind in his sails.  You have never met a happier couple.

The stories he told about how Celtic were transformed from a sporting irrelevance into one of the most powerful and feared clubs in Europe were incredible.  His story was one of huge and dramatic achievement.  You and I are the beneficiaries.

The players he signed are legendary.  Kenny Dalglish, who was in tears in Sean’s home the night he agreed to go to Liverpool, Danny McGrain, a person Sean could not speak highly enough about, and countless more.  He was a committed Celtic man but took no pleasure in the death of Rangers, such was his generosity of spirit.

Sean described Jock, himself and Sir Robert Kelly as a three man team who had the vision to drive Celtic forward.  He believed that when Sir Robert died in 1971 the club’s loss was significant. Nothing was the same again.

His own parting from Celtic, in 1975, was far from satisfactory, but if he told me once, he told me 10 times, “I don’t want a single word said against Celtic”.  The club that you and I recognise is the creation of Jock, Sean and Sir Robert.  They transformed an amateurish football club into a legendary movement.  He, more than anyone I ever met, never wanted a figurative goal scored against this legend.

Today we have lost one of the architects of all we hold dear, a man who achieved the Miracle of Lisbon.  His insights reach back into the depths of our character.  His decision to author an autobiography is a gift to you and me.  I’ll share many of his anecdotes between now and when it’s published.

My sincere condolences to Myra, son Sean and all the family.  We have lost the man who was our greatest living legend but they have lost a great husband, father and grandfather.  A remarkable life has come to an end.

I’m watching the St Mirren-Ross County game at work.

In the build-up to the game the two chairmen where in the studio with McCann and Spanner talking about league reconstruction – you just know where this is going.

Spanner: “Given everything that’s happened do you now regret not allowing (tribute act) into the Premier League?”

Looking jaded at the obvious agenda, Gilmour said: “What’s happened has happened.”

Anyone who is still in need of a Juve ticket should keep an eye on the clubs website.

At the last AGM a shareholder asked why he had been moved out of his seat for a CL game and when he went to the game it was not a UEFA sponsor who was in his seat but a ghuy who had bought a ticket at the TO.

PL explained that UEFA are allocated ‘x’k tickets for the game but regularly hand back a load just a day or two before the fixture and Celtic then just put theses out on a first come first served basis. PLHad said he had written to UEFA to ask that any unused sponsors tickets be returned earlier.

If UEFA return tickets for the Juve game a day or two before the game they may be on sale at the TO, keep an eye.

Heard huge drop in take up of Sky Sports since the summer especially from pubs. They are desperate to get Sevco back in the SPL.

Hearts are taking advantage of the newly created “extra man against Celtic” rule they will play with 12 men, plus the officials and a stray dug they found down the back of the Gorgie Road..

  10. Gary Hooper 5/1 to score in both halves today. Like the look of that, and celtic -1 goal at 5/6.

So best avoid if you have any sense! My record at the bookies is like McCourt at Greggs. just keep handing over money.

They run Sevco stories on a daily basis. They broadcast their matches every other week.

No other club in British football gets more coverage. It’s not just Celtic supporters who have noted this either.

It’s little wonder people are switching off. That level of coverage for a Scottish fourth-tier club can’t possibly be justified.

    Juventus v Udinese —– 7.45 [uk ] tonight.

Tough game for Juve . Udinese began the season badly but this season’s. new signings/prospects have hit a vein of form..

Lazio play Palermo [ away ] in tonight’s early kick off . If Lazio win they will be on equal points with Juve . That would up the pressure on Juve to beat Udinese .

The more pressure there is on Juve the more they will be forced to play a tired looking Pirlo. They like to rest him before big European games .

They are not alone either. That Zombie Lamont at the BBC said: “Lennon spent most of this morning talking to Hooper’s representatives but doesn’t know if player will still be at club by end of January.”

Neil Lennon said nothing in the press conference that could be construed that way. Not even close to it.

Unless you are a hurting Zombie – a Lamont obviously is.

    Enjoy the game.
