The Mahatma Gandhi question

902

It was curious that Peter Lawwell was quizzed on potentially having a conflict of interest in deciding if a recent multiple-convict would be regarded by the SFA as Fit and Proper to direct a football club.  The club in question are not even in our league; conflict exists only in the heads of those who persist in believing in a ‘Firm which expired on the liquidation of one party.

I’ve avoided the appropriateness of a recent convict directing a football club as the deciding matters appear overwhelmingly obvious.  There are no written rules on being Fit and Proper, largely due to the Mahatma Gandhi question posed by Neil Doncaster last year.  Gandhi was a convict, but one of impeccable character.  The contemporaneous character references are all important.  The SFA will also be chastened by recent experiences.

My guess is that in the unlikely event the Nomads acquiesce, Peter Lawwell’s views will be immaterial.  “Nobody likes us, we don’t care” has nothing to do with it, just find someone Fit and Proper!

Delighted that Aberdeen’s quest for silverware survived Fir Park last night.  This club have underachieved for around 20 years now but Derek McInnes stands a reasonable chance of delivering second place in the league, as well as the League Cup.

Not so delighted at Hibs capitulation.  Despite playing like Brazil in the 1970 World Cup for the first 15 minutes of their home tie against Hearts last night they were soon out-muscled, with more than a few players looking miles out of their depth.  There is no compensation for Scottish football in Hearts progressing to the semi-finals.  They are mid-crisis and will remain so, irrespective of how they perform in cup competitions, but the absence of Hibernian from the genuine challengers is a regret.

Morton went down to a late St Johnstone goal.  They have now lost five and drawn one of their six games since winning at Celtic Park, their only victory since August…..

With this in mind, I’ll refrain from referring to the potential advantage of having a Cup Final at ‘home’ until we have earned the right to be there.

Dreadful news of Fernando Ricksen.  I hope he finds strength from those close to him in the years ahead.

The new CQN Annual is looking great, really delighted with it. Thank you to everyone who has participated in the project. You can pre-order below:

shoulder2shoulder, I’ve ripped the pish out of the “east end” comment sufficiently I think. See my earlier posts.

You gave an opinion and there was a gross over reaction to your post. As I said, I’ve got no issue with what you posted, I’ve seen much worse…………………………ha ha, I’ve posted much worse.

All the bitchin aside, does anyone have any news on the fitness of Kris Commons?

It would comfort me to think he’ll take to the field in Amsterdam next week.

I say we unleash the Big Baby with wee Jimmy and Sammi either side.

That Big Baby has one incredible stride on him when he is sprinting without the ball.

Keep a tight 3 in midfield, if Kris is fit he plays the apex, if not I’m sure Neil will formulate something that will get us the 3 points. I am confident we can beat them there by at least 1 goal. Our game is geared to counter attacking football, on the CL stage and we are getting better and better as the seasons go on. Always remember it is very hard to get even a point away from home.

Delaneys Dunky, that sounds very familiar. In my days as a wee spratlett my mum would tell us to turn away when we drove past the shithole (I think it was maybe visible from the M8 in the old days), she told me and my brothers and sister that it would burn our eyes out………………FFS?

Petec, the reality of Celtic getting a point away from home is not lost on me. Bear in mind I’m at least two years older than you and have suffered our lack of away success for those additional two years.

I have a good feeling about the away game. Efe and Virgil are like a real top class CL CH pairing, IMO, and they’ve played less than 20 games together.

She died in the Southern General the day before we played the huns ( I think it was the Lubo 5-1, the sweetest thing game, although I’d need to confirm that with my wee bro) and her last words to me were “Celtic will win tomorrow”. We did and I cried.

MANY have tried and all have so far failed to make it pay, but Peter Lawwell flew out to China yesterday – his third visit this year – in an attempt to put in place the foundations for tapping into a vast commercial football market.

Trying to get a foothold in what he calls an “extraordinary developing country and powerhouse” is a long game, said the Celtic chief executive.

Lawwell took with him his commercial director, Adrian Filby, plus John Park, his chief scout. A representative from the SPFL will be in China also and so, too, will First Minister Alex Salmond.

“There is a team of us and it’s the third time we have been out this year,” said Lawwell. “Whenever these countries develop, football follows. They’re football crazy, mainly about the English Premier League and the Champions League. So, with our profile and exposure, people are now talking about Celtic.

“There is a lot of investment coming from China now into the UK, in terms of Manchester Airport. They are looking for a presence and they are looking to invest in a lot of western European companies and brands. Football follows, and we are going out there to find out what is going on.”

In recent years, Celtic have had two Chinese players on their books, neither of whom were successful. Zheng Zhi played less than 20 times for the club before being moved on, and Du Wei lasted just 45 minutes in a Scottish Cup defeat to Clyde before his time in Glasgow came to an embarrassing halt. Merely signing players from China is not a fast-track into this market.

Although it faces competition from the rise in popularity of the NBA of America, football remains the most watched spectator sport in China. The local leagues are poor, so the focus on Europe is huge.

A research company called Kantar estimated earlier in the year that Manchester United have as many as 108 million supporters in China. United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Barcelona have all played pre-season matches in the country over the last few years.

Celtic are very much playing a game of catch-up here. In 2011, Liverpool created a social media platform in China, launching themselves on Weibo, the Chinese Twitter. They now have more than 750,000 followers. The content from their website is translated from an office in Shanghai. Brendan Rodgers has recently done a Q&A just for Chinese fans.

Arsenal have made China their priority for international growth. Their website tailors its content accordingly.

Many of the other major clubs in Europe do the same. Real Madrid’s website carried a video of Cristiano Ronaldo wishing Chinese fans a happy Chinese New Year, with Iker Casillas repeating the message in Mandarin.

Most of these clubs have their own online merchandise stores targeted at Chinese supporters.

Lawwell concedes that it will be a fiendishly difficult market to break into, but the potential rewards for success would be significant. “We are going to sign an agreement with a Chinese company who are going to represent us. It’s not investment into the club. It’s sponsorship, commercial and maybe some social projects. We’ll go to Beijing as we have contacts there and it’s all about getting the Celtic name out there. Whether it is through social or grassroots projects, whether it is academies here or sponsorship.

“For a Champions League club, that is the proposition. The difficulty we have in any international sponsorship is the competition, which is mainly the English Premier League. That is the challenge. How do we, playing in Scotland with little exposure, attract sponsorship? Champions League is one. For Chinese companies looking to establish themselves in Europe, they get a bit of profile. For Chinese businesses who are buying brands to take back, it gives profile.

“In terms of our proposition, like we have in India, we have social projects.

“There are a lot of dislocated communities there and football brings people together. The reason we were formed was to give our community an identity, so that’s a way of getting our brand out there. Champions League. Football. Community. That’s our proposition. Hopefully, they like us and our values and want to be part of it.

“John is going to meet a few people, see who is there and maybe take in a game or two. The SPFL have sold their internet rights and that’s happening. That’s a start and, if the job is done properly, they can take things on to the TV.“

Lawwell will be in China until early next week and will direct to Amsterdam for Celtic’s Champions League game with Ajax on Wednesday night

A Celtic trade mission begins in China this morning as the club seeks to expand its presence in the Asian powerhouse economy – and also explore a possible source of new talent on the field. Peter Lawwell, the Parkhead chief executive and Celtic’s chief scout, John Park, flew out on Thursday accompanied by a high-powered delegation as part of a series of exploratory missions.

It’s an extraordinary developing country and powerhouse. Whenever these countries develop, football follows,” said Lawwell. “They are football crazy, mainly about the English Premier League and the Champions League, so with our profile and exposure, people are now talking about Celtic.

“A lot of outward investment coming from China now comes into the UK and they are looking to invest in a lot of Western European companies and brands. We are going to sign an agreement with a Chinese company who are going to represent us.

“It’s not investment into the club. We’ll go to Beijing as we have contacts there and it’s all about getting the Celtic name out there, whether through social grassroots projects, academies here or sponsorship. For a Champions League club, that is the proposition.”

Closer to home, Celtic have taken an interest in the recent comments by the Galatasary president, Unal Aysal, who said that 20 top clubs were actively planning the formation of a European Super League. Lawwell said: “I don’t think there’s any structure at the moment behind it, but who knows? The dynamic is that the strong get stronger and the weak get weaker.

“Ultimately, UEFA are beginning to realise that and their possible solution is this regional league concept. It creates bigger markets and bigger media rights for the smaller nations to be able to compete. I don’t see any major breakaway in the next few years anyway.

“When we travel, we benchmark and we compare and we match up very, very well, so the opportunity to show ourselves (in the Champions League) and get that profile and exposure and bring people here and see what Celtic is – not just on the park or the support but what we do off the field – enhances that reputation.

“We’re keeping in touch with our contacts in the European Club Association in terms of the bigger picture and therefore we’d like to think that if there is change then we would be involved in the discussion.”

Celtic face Ajax in Amsterdam in the Champions League next Wednesday and fears of crowd trouble have been expressed following an outbreak of hooliganism amongst the Dutch fans at Parkhead last week. “Our fans travel really well and there’s a lot going – more than who have tickets – so we have taken all the precautions, because the relationship is so good with Ajax, to make sure that it goes smoothly.

“No matter where you go, it’s always in the back of your mind that you want your fans to be safe, but the precautions we’re taking will hopefully make sure that happens there as well.”

  18. Good luck Broony

Celtic captain Scott Brown’s attempt to reduce his three-match ban will be heard by Uefa’s Appeals Body in Switzerland this morning.

The Scotland midfielder is expected to make a personal plea for a lesser punishment over the petulant kick that he aimed at the grounded Neymar during the 1 October Champions League defeat to Barcelona.

Brown’s automatic one-game ban was extended to three matches by the European body’s Control and Disciplinary Committee, a penalty Celtic manager Neil Lennon regards as ‘excessive’.

Lennon is hopeful that at least one match will be overturned and has cited England pair Wayne Rooney and John Terry’s success in having three-match suspensions for violent conduct reduced after making personal appearances at Uefa’s headquarters in Nyon.

The player is set to be accompanied by the club’s lawyer and secretary.

Brown has already sat out the recent crucial 2-1 home win over Ajax and will miss next Wednesday’s return leg in Amsterdam and the 26 November visit of AC Milan unless the committee look favourably on the midfielder.

The Appeals Body is comprised of chairman Pedro Tomas Marques of Spain and 11 members.

Brown was shown a straight red card by French referee Stephan Lannoy in the 59th minute after he felled Neymar and then aimed a kick at the Brazilian.

The 28-year-old admitted to making a mistake but maintained that the decision was harsh.

  19. I take issue with a poster on TSFM.

He stated that no-one, not one single person, associated with RFC/Sevco has told the truth.

    How wrong can you be?

Craig Mather spoke the truth. OK, admittedly only once but that counts for something.

As I recall he accused the SFA of having ‘one rule for one club and another for the rest’.

Never was a truer word spoken.

Mind you, I don’t think the true meaning of the above statement is quite what Craig meant….
