The most secure club in Europe

868

Ronny Deila has been talking about a treble since early in the season, far too early for my liking.  History suggests that trebles are notoriously difficult to win, even for dominant teams.  The league is usually won by the best team but it’s hard to win every game in two cup competitions, no matter how good you are.

Despite this, I’ll not bet against Ronny getting his wish.  He needs to win four games cup games, three of which would be at neutral Hampden, with only one game, the Scottish Cup quarter final, possibly being played away from home.

The cynic among you will, therefore, expect an away draw, possibly in some far-flung end of the country, like Inverness.  My money is on a trip to Easter Road.  I’ll be happy to avoid Tannadice, scene of our last defeat and a place they’re understandably feeling sort over the loss of Stuart Armstrong and Gary Mackay-Steven.

People of Kirkcaldy: that whole 1994-Ibrox thing, forget about it, we’re OK.

Well done to Celtic for highlighting their position as the least likely football team to financially default, according the US rating agency, Standards & Poor’s.  Commercial and ticket income across Scottish football has fallen in recent years but that was only going to result in Armageddon if those in charge of clubs put an inflated sense of their own importance ahead of paying bills.

    Good Evening.

About an hour ago I parked my car and noticed that my phone was showing that I had missed a call. When I listened to the voice message that had been left by the caller, a former girlfriend, I knew immediately why she had called and what her message was going to be when I called her back.

She was calling to say that he mother had passed away at the tender age of 86.

Cast your mind back to your late teens and early twenties. Those heady days when love, protest, politics, beliefs, hopes and the whole wide world stood in front of you waiting to be conquered and where each and every day really was a learning day ….. even if you didn’t know it at the time.

In my late teens and early twenties I more or less vacated my native west end of Glasgow and became an honorary “Buddie”.

More importantly, I became and honorary Lynch.

My girlfriend of the time was the youngest daughter in the Lynch household and for the next 4 years and more I would stroll through Barshaw Park and enter the house at Balgair Drive where I was greeted and treated as a member of a fantastic close knit family.

It was in Paisley that I really began to understand the joy of the local pub (Harvey’s Bar) where every Celtic victory or loss was dissected with all the precision and the detail of a surgeon’s knife.

I felt at home there, would sing a song or two given half a chance, and shared more than a few laughs that brought a tear to the eye and an ache in the sides.

And at the head of the lynch household were Jim and Kathleen Lynch. Both were teachers, and both became sort of surrogate parents to yours truly.

I remember the time Kathleen gave her husband a roasting for calling me “A tube!” and ” A font of completely useless knowledge” and the poor man was made to apologise to me though I never thought for a minute that he had anything to apologise for.

Jim died a good few years ago now, and tonight I learn that Kathleen has gone to join him in that better place.

As you go through life, people leave an impression upon you — or at least they do for me — and I can honestly say that the Lynch family left a huge impression on me. I got a real sense of family, community, fun, ridiculousness, loyalty, and a togetherness that would see you through thick and thin. It was a lesson never to be forgotten.

So it is with deep regret and the shedding of a tear or two that I learn of the passing of Kathleen Lynch, wife to Jim, Mother to her fantastic weans Terry, Roisin, Tom, Katie, Maura and Joe, gandmother to a host of sensational grandchildren and great grandchildren, Sister in law to the late Matt Lynch, Aunt to Davie Hay, Mother In Law to another group of wonderful folk, friend to oh so many people — and friend and sort of surrogate mum to me for some of the most important years in my wee life.

God bless you Kate, it was and still is a privilege and honour to have known you — and no, I never did like peas and yes I am still eating my carrots.

If you are a believer in anything or in any God, then spare a prayer for Kathleen Lynch — she was a right good yin.

    BRTH,

Without giving too much away, see previous posts. I went to school with Terry (a member of your own profession) and my sister still lives down the road. Condolences to Terry and the rest of the Lynch family. I must give my sister a phone tomorrow to see about a Mass card.

  21. Just thot I would let you know about one of the huns new loanees, Streete I think he is called, well as far as I understand, the hun is the third, that would be 3 rd club he has played for this season, now, that is a no, no, as far as the rules tell me, but huns and rules……

I posted about this the other night without a single reply, rule breaking, 2 nd nature so it is to thems

Apparently, FIFA are not responding, cos the SFA never contacted them re this player.

let’s respond then, bombard FIFA, bombard the sfa, ask them WHY the hun can register a player that has already played for two clubs ina season without any questions.

This is a feckin disgrace, yet the rest of scottish footy let’s it go, no wonder the game is in the crapper

    lovely eulogy, RIP Kathleen Lynch.

I liked the thought of casting your mind back to young, loving and brave days.

I had a shock last May when I found out that my girlfriend from back then had passed away(inverse of your story). I still haven’t had the bottle to write to her elderly mother to find out the details and where she is buried. Not sure what to as my heart was broken for the second time but is still irrelevant on comparison to the mother’s loss.

I am back in her home town for a wedding at the end of the month and I think your post has given me the spur I need to make contact and do the right thing

sorry for this folks, just burst out.

Yeah it is my Birthday today.

    Quiet one to be honest.

Saturday was pretty good at the party I must say. Having another one on Friday and then it’s game over for a while as regards the bevy.

He’s played for Port Vale and Newco. Newcastle U21’s don’t count as competitive fixtures under SFA rules. No case to answer.
