The most secure club in Europe

868

Ronny Deila has been talking about a treble since early in the season, far too early for my liking.  History suggests that trebles are notoriously difficult to win, even for dominant teams.  The league is usually won by the best team but it’s hard to win every game in two cup competitions, no matter how good you are.

Despite this, I’ll not bet against Ronny getting his wish.  He needs to win four games cup games, three of which would be at neutral Hampden, with only one game, the Scottish Cup quarter final, possibly being played away from home.

The cynic among you will, therefore, expect an away draw, possibly in some far-flung end of the country, like Inverness.  My money is on a trip to Easter Road.  I’ll be happy to avoid Tannadice, scene of our last defeat and a place they’re understandably feeling sort over the loss of Stuart Armstrong and Gary Mackay-Steven.

People of Kirkcaldy: that whole 1994-Ibrox thing, forget about it, we’re OK.

Well done to Celtic for highlighting their position as the least likely football team to financially default, according the US rating agency, Standards & Poor’s.  Commercial and ticket income across Scottish football has fallen in recent years but that was only going to result in Armageddon if those in charge of clubs put an inflated sense of their own importance ahead of paying bills.

Of course we’ve been drawn away to the second best team left in the competition.

If I was paranoid I would say they are desperate to do what they can to try to stop the treble………………….lucky I’m not though………….

  2. Fantastic draw.Real cup tie.Why would we want to play at the Morgue that Celtic Park has become?.Away fans know how to support the team.

The photo has been talked about in enough sensible organs for it to exist. Although I can’t claim to have seen it.

As for the other stuff. In the wake of all we have seen in the last few years I wouldn’t count it out. Nor am I immediately convinced of a massive all encompassing cover up.

  4. Tough draw.

What we need as much as anything else for this tie, is to avoid a refereeing performance that marred our last day there.

    It was diabolical.

In fact the only thing standing in our way of a treble is the MIB. The club needs to put a marker down.

  5. Given that they’re the best team left, apart from us, the chances are we’d have had to play them at some point to lift the trophy. It would not have surprised me if some had been crying ‘fix’ had we met them in the final. ;)

Philvis @ 13:22 said: ‘Contrary to this image some folks have of Lord Snooty and pals guffawing at the poor while they themselves pay no tax, high earners and the rich contribute far, far more than their pro-rata share of tax. On income tax alone, the top 1% pay a staggering 25% of all tax. When you look at VAT, stamp duty, inheritance tax, taxes on capital gains and whatnot, you find a similar pattern. There’s just no lawful way to be rich in the UK without paying a lot more than the average man in taxation.’

Thanks for that: seems to sum up your position quite well: but it’s still bollocks, in that you’re making a value judgement [while referring to the law, even stating elsewhere stating that ‘people have an obligation to obey the law. No more than that.’]

So what if (with the stress being on that last word) the ‘top 1%’ [I presume you mean ‘top 15 of earners’, or maybe you do actually mean to imply something else] pay 25% of all tax?

Even if true, why the hell shouldn’t they? They can afford to …

Do they work significantly harder than their fellow countrymen who earn a mere fraction of what they earn? Harder than a stay-at-home Mum (or Dad) who runs a busy household, or Gran who looks after her weans weans? Or the night duty nurse who may one day need to exercise all her skill and years of experience in treating you (at no charge) in those last weeks of your life?

Or were they merely jammy by being born into privilege?

I’d go further to suggest that 99% of that top 1% enjoyed an immensely privileged upbringing, giving them access to resources and opportunities beyond the dreams of all but the most fortunate of their fellow citizens, thereby virtually assuring them of the feted life to which they have grown accustomed and which, by law, ought to be beyond the rest of us plebs.

I’d say the law works pretty well for that ‘top 1%’ …

  7. So between now and the end of March – a period that will define our season we have, let’s just say, an interesting array of fixtures.

    Inter Milan – Home & Away – 19 & 26 February

    Dundee Utd – Away/Hampden/Home – 8/15 & 21 March

    Thistle & St Johnstone – Away – 11 & 14 February

    Hamilton, Aberdeen & St Johnstone – Home – 22 February & 1 & 4 March.

That’s TEN vital matches in 40 days – a TALL order – but so good to look forward to!!!

  8. CQN today:

    We’ll get ICT away it’s a stick-on.

I know for sure it will be Inverness away.

It’s bound to be ICT away.

It will be a fix as usual. ICT away guaranteed.

    After the draw . . .

So it’s United away. So predictable.

    Hohum.

I don’t think being one of the most financially secure clubs is something to be shouting from the rafters when we are playing in front of half empty stadiums to be honest.

If anything, it probably re-affirms some of the decision making paths the half sitting at home have taken in the belief our club has been on a spiral of downsizing for years now.

I believe the product on the pitch is better than it was last season and has been but in contrast to most Celtic teams throughout our illustrious history – it is still very poor by comparison.

  11. We would had to play them at some stage.

Would rather have played them at home and would have fancied a good crowd.

Glad we have some fresh legs to come into the team for league games.

    Tin hat on….

I want the treble this year, and think we should do whatever is necessary to maximize our chances.

I said at the beginning of the year that the league was a foregone conclusion, and I still believe it is. As injuries to other smaller squads mount, our competition will drop more points in the second half than (i) we will, and (ii) they have in the first half of the season. Stay the same course, and we will win the league comfortably.

As far as Europe, my aim is really getting us ready for next season. As inconsistent as they are, I see little chance of beating Inter. I know we are improving week by week, but I think a Euro final is still a bit beyond the squad this season.

So, I would like us to focus on the two domestic cups…. we should have had more trebles than we have, and this is a brillant chance to add one …

For me, the league game against DU is the least important of the three … followed by the Inter ties …. but make sure we keep the treble alive. Rest/rotate players as needed to keep things fresh… or play our strongest 11 in the cup games against DU, and maybe refresh the squad for the other games.

I know some will not be happy as it means acknowledging that Inter (even though they are inconsistent at the moment) are too strong, but I want a treble for RD. Euro glory for RD can wait until next year. RD and I aren’t greedy.

PS… reading back about Eddie. Shocking, but not surprising. Eddie, If you are reading, and need anything (just feel like blowing off steam), feel free to get my email from P67.
