The next 72 hours

Ross County are involved in a fight for sixth place with four other teams all within two points of each other. Hamilton Accies win last night pushed them to the top of this mini-league, but despite a run of form which has seen County without a win in over two months, a win over the Champions tonight would see the Highlanders climb into the top half of the table.

Their best chance of getting a result like this surely lies between the ears of the Celtic players. Over the last eight days Celtic have twice played to packed out crowds in Champions League and League Cup semi-final encounters. Victoria Park, Dingwall, will provide nothing like the same intensity. How Brendan Rodgers sharpens his players wits for what will be a cup final for the hosts, will be a significant challenge.

County are one of only three clubs in the league who have not beaten any of the table’s top half teams (bottom club, Dundee, and ‘The Rangers are coming’ ‘Going for 55’ ‘Narrowing the gap’ Newco are the other two). This type of statistic is often interpreted as a negative, but beating the teams at the bottom of the league is a critical objective of any team who want to survive.

Ross County are not having a great season, but they have achieved the most important things and can play with the pressure off tonight. It’s a result I’d not put money on.

While the Celtic engine rolls on, Aberdeen’s stalled at Hamilton last night, albeit to a soft-looking penalty. If we win our games in hand we’ll have an eight point advantage over Hearts and 10 over Aberdeen., which is a remarkable lead so early in the season, especially as we are the only team distracted by European competition.

One issue on team selection: 72 hours from now we’ll be underway at Pittodrie. While we need to pick a team to win tonight’s game, players are not machines. This should be a night for Griffiths, Armstrong, Roberts, McGregor, Izaguirre and Gamboa to start.

  5. The tale of the Royal guest house is not over… .I’m here, had one room swapped already for another after the door wouldnt lock although they said they had specially picked it for me with a combination of C67.

On entering I ignored the signs that said “no whistling in the snooker hall” and had an encounter with a guy dancing on a table, that turned out to be reception. The dancer was the managers son but asked me whether I liked the new stair carpet.

The manager then appeared and once he stopped picking his beard, he asked me to help him up the stairs because his sight wasnt great.

I am pleasantly surprised to find that the bed is clean and comfortable…and even more pleased that it is in my room.

I have been told that if I am leaving early than he will leave the breakfast door open ….presumably the combination lock doesn’t work on that one either…..and if I want to cook breakfast I can go ahead, “I like my eggs well done” he added

More undoubtedly will follow…probably after breakfast.

    Hail hail

  6. Cheers Almore, your help would be greatly appreciated re two tickets for the cup final on November 27. I’m from the Meath/Kildare border and two of us regularly go over to see the Hoops. If you could email me on eanan.lynch@alumni.nuim.ie that would be brilliant. HH.

  8. Keep them coming Matt, brilliant stuff. Alternative ‘live updates’ articles are the latest thing!

  9. I think that the room swap, albeit that the door didn’t lock, may have been even more of an upgrade than I thought.

The towels on my bed on the new room had on top of them, two wee golden wrappered chocolates…i think.

When I asked why my original room didnt have them…the manager of the beardy dinner and myopia said that I had a budget deal and that didn’t include complimentary chocolates….but on this occasion he would “turn a blind eye” and provide them free gratis.

Some of us are just born lucky. :)

    Hail hail

  11. Good evening CQN just in from a four hour stint in the mixed Roman-Irish baths in the Müller‘sches Volksbad in Munich. The last time I saw so many f@nnies they were wearing red, white and blue strips.

Hoping for a Goodwin tonight ;-) but any type of win will do. Going up to the local Irish Bar, Kennedy’s, to see if they are showing the game. I won’t hold my breath with the Mancs playing each other. Failing that it’ll be back to the hotel room and CTV on the iPad (can’t be arsed traversing Munich to watch it elsewhere).

Excerpt from jock Stein says ……programme notes

If I know Ally MacLeod, the Ayr manager will be concentrating on catching us on the hop and hoping that we have not recovered the form which let us beat rangers so convincingly. Since then we have been far from impressive against stranraer in the league cup, thoroughly well beaten by Dundee in the league, and almost embarrassed by the Norwegians , rosenborg ,in the European cup (for the second time).

I take no credit from any of these teams, especially Dundee, who played splendidly. Maybe everyone at Celtic park will now stop considering a match with rangers as the be-all and end-all.

The programme also has some great adverts…. have a guess …

  14. Will BR make changes to starting eleven tonight?

Doesn’t normally go for multiple changes, preferring to make fewer changes than some expect.

I predict one change from cup semi – Bitton dropped – Armstrong or McGregor in.

Personally, I dislike too many changes to starting team. Rarely does the team gel and we end up looking disjointed.

My thoughts? Strongest team to start, and make subs only if and when points look secure.
