The sectarian crime stats they forgot to destroy

1261

I’ve just caught Joe O’Rourke’s article on the Association site about the long-awaited released of statistics on sectarian crime in Scotland.  Joe suggests that the data from 2003 – 2010 was has been destroyed by the Crown Office.  I also hear that the Scottish Government will release entirely irrelevant ‘information’ today, specifically, where offences took place, not which groups were responsible or which groups were targeted by the offenders.

It takes a lot of effort to make sure you destroy data these days, you need to ensure not only that prosecutors permanently delete backups (which I really doubt they do) but also that the police similarly comply.

Fortunately all is not lost.  While it’s just about believable that regional police forces across Scotland and the Crown Office have acted in symmetry on this issue, I could have helped the First Minister, Alex Salmond’s, search for clarity by pointing him in the direction of British Transport Police (BTP).  The Transport Police are a separate force who operate across Britain and are run by the Home Office in London.  They are also a lot less proficient at destroying data.

They previously gave me detailed statistics on all incidents they record in connection with Scottish football for season 2007-08.  One of the most pleasing aspects of the information is the complete eradication of sectarian offences from all but one Scottish club, so the First Minister will be delighted to learn he has a smaller problem on his hands than he perhaps knew.  According to BTP, 11 arrests were made for sectarian offences in total, 10 Rangers fans and one Northern Ireland fan.

You can see the detail figures for all recorded incidents here (the majority of which are for non-sectarian issues).  From a total of 99 incidents (not all of which resulted in arrest), there were six involving Celtic fans, six for Dundee United, seven for Motherwell, four for Hibernian and five each for Aberdeen and Hearts.  Rangers fans were involved in a total of 48 incidents.

The BPT figures also make it clear that most incidents occur when fans travel to away venues.  The Force also confirmed that incidents surrounding the 2008 Uefa Cup final in Manchester were not included in these statistics.

To further aid Mr Salmond in his search for clarity on this issue, he can contact British Transport Police with a Freedom of Information request here, where they will be able to provide him (or you) with up to date stats.

Been distracted with family related stuff for a while, but currently on vacation with Mrs RWE in Florida.

The suicide death of a family friend and the diagnosis of a terminal illness in one of my children kind of took the wind out of my sails for wee bit.

When did the Green Brigade become the entire away support ?

We’ll be lucky if we have 10/15 members there tomorrow, who will be sitting with their various csc’s etc.

Will you try and encourage everyone you know to ditch the SNP at the next election?

This is it, because if they just did the wrong thing you wouldn’t vote for them again.

But if you thought that they had targeted you and your kind in a devious and vindictive way then you will preach to others and do anything in your power to highlight on their errors.

I hate the fact that Scottish authorities are going to take away a fundamental human right to hold a belief and to vocalise it but I hate it more because its being used against Celtic.

I just hope the club are going to be willing to fight tooth n nail if it works out that we get attacked after giving up singing or chanting what the club asks us not to.

    re Michael Kelly

I get that he’s an articulate Celtic fan and he’s not the ogre I might once have thought of him as. However, that idea that he should ever represent Celtic in any formal capacity again still appals me. I was young at the time, so maybe the detail is wrong, but in my mind he was a man who put self-interest ahead of Celtic’s best interests and who stood obstinantly in the way of McCann for reasons that simply didn’t make sense.

I’m sure there is a new version of events that will be offered, but, I still get a chill when I hear his name.

    ……………

I worked part time at the Park back then. In my view they where men who loved Celtic but, didn’t have the financial might to invest or cover any investment in the club. Fans where desperate to get Michael Kelly on the board, but he soon got sucked into the general malaise at the club at the time. I think while they knew they had to do what was best for the club, they where aware that their families also had to have priority over the club. I don’t know if any of us would have done any different in their shoes.

Michael Kelly was IMO the brains of the Board and the rest where either guys who only got the gig because of their name (Chris White & Kevin Kelly), where there far to long and where far to comfortable (Farrell), there as a thank you (McGinn) or gof knows why (Smith).

But, apart from Smith, I know they where all fans.

  13. RWE CSC:

“In London and much of the Southeast, if these same stats were blacks or Asians would be the subject of parliamentary questions, Home Secretary responses and dominate the media headlines.”

New study finds seven times more black people per population are in prison – in the US number is just four times as many

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2010/oct/11/black-prison-population-increase-england

” During the ensuing furore, if it had emerged that the official records of the offences that demonstrated the trend of discrimination had been destroyed, the relevant politician and Civil servant would have been sacked.” Unquestionably.

To “You can’t handle the Truth”: I think we should be getting to the bottom of why the public might think football matches in Scotland are dangerous sectarian-fulled bloodbaths when in fact it seems the vast majority of offecnes are perpetrated by dangerous sectarian-fuelled bigots . What’s you non-qualified statstatastician’s take on the fact it is mostly away fans commiting offenses around Celtic Park?

    All these injuries.

It makes you wonder if the players who are soon to be out of contract and know they wont be getting a new one are not busting a gut to stand up and be counted, especially at the tougher venues.

A lesson to be learned here methinks

Good official comment from Celtic FC today as well, it’s been a long time coming.

Hopefully the gloves are coming off now.

It’s often said that that statistics can be manipulated to provide various viewpoints or conclusions.

However, when the statistics are destroyed, there can only be one conclusion!

Keep up the good work !!!

    =================================================================

I remember that wee nugget .funny though ,when the addresses of the convicted seemed to have holiday homes in the Glasgow area .

It should be of no surprise to anyone (struth)apart that Catholics are more likely to be victims than not .

I believe the stats were there at one point and as such it should come as no surprise that the MSM will ignore this in order to push their own agenda .

The fact that CELTIC FOOTBALL CLUB are the 1st and only Scottish team to be reported to the SFA/UEFA

for chanting at CELTIC PARK by the Police in this country should not go unnoticed IMO this has all the makings of a trap being set for our AWAY fans and this weekend is going to be the place to spring it .

What have we heard this week from the LL

    Celtics bogey team

Celtic lost the league at ICT last year

The timing of the laughable stats as revealed by the CSA

If you thought there were mics at the Falkirk game for the minutes silence then you ain’t seen nothing yet .

To all away bhoys tomorrow they ARE out to get you bhoys make no mistake about it and if big butch can get his team UP for the tie then all the better .

If their stats ploy gets scuppered by Paul .mort and other stats ,they will be even more desperate to boost their cause .

    BE AWARE BHOYS .

  20. As most will know I criticise and am sceptical of Celtic with regards how they treat the support when I feel it is necessary.

Which of late has been a lot.

When it is due I also applaud them wich is only correct.

Today I rapturously applaud them with regards their response to the stupid figures publish re. Sectarianism at football grounds.

I also haven’t done the calculations yet but my gut feeling is that:

If you are a Catholic or perceived to be a Catholic you are approx. 8 times more likely to be the victim of a sectarian offence than if you are a non-Catholic.

That is a rise in my book.

    Approx based on

    700,000(aprox no. Of Catholics in Scotland) / 400 = 1750

    4,500,00 (non Catholics) / 296 = 15,202

    15,202/1750 = 8.687

    re Michael Kelly

He’s still a Celt and it shows. Last time round he was excellent on TV and radio. He exposed Jabba as a particularly nasty, fat alien. Jabba responded by referring to Michael as ‘your kind’.

His recent STV appearance and his Scotsman article said it all. And great credit to him as a man who felt very bitter at the time of Fergus’s take-over.
