The sectarian crime stats they forgot to destroy

1261

I’ve just caught Joe O’Rourke’s article on the Association site about the long-awaited released of statistics on sectarian crime in Scotland.  Joe suggests that the data from 2003 – 2010 was has been destroyed by the Crown Office.  I also hear that the Scottish Government will release entirely irrelevant ‘information’ today, specifically, where offences took place, not which groups were responsible or which groups were targeted by the offenders.

It takes a lot of effort to make sure you destroy data these days, you need to ensure not only that prosecutors permanently delete backups (which I really doubt they do) but also that the police similarly comply.

Fortunately all is not lost.  While it’s just about believable that regional police forces across Scotland and the Crown Office have acted in symmetry on this issue, I could have helped the First Minister, Alex Salmond’s, search for clarity by pointing him in the direction of British Transport Police (BTP).  The Transport Police are a separate force who operate across Britain and are run by the Home Office in London.  They are also a lot less proficient at destroying data.

They previously gave me detailed statistics on all incidents they record in connection with Scottish football for season 2007-08.  One of the most pleasing aspects of the information is the complete eradication of sectarian offences from all but one Scottish club, so the First Minister will be delighted to learn he has a smaller problem on his hands than he perhaps knew.  According to BTP, 11 arrests were made for sectarian offences in total, 10 Rangers fans and one Northern Ireland fan.

You can see the detail figures for all recorded incidents here (the majority of which are for non-sectarian issues).  From a total of 99 incidents (not all of which resulted in arrest), there were six involving Celtic fans, six for Dundee United, seven for Motherwell, four for Hibernian and five each for Aberdeen and Hearts.  Rangers fans were involved in a total of 48 incidents.

The BPT figures also make it clear that most incidents occur when fans travel to away venues.  The Force also confirmed that incidents surrounding the 2008 Uefa Cup final in Manchester were not included in these statistics.

To further aid Mr Salmond in his search for clarity on this issue, he can contact British Transport Police with a Freedom of Information request here, where they will be able to provide him (or you) with up to date stats.

It’s fair comment, I imagine many of us would have acted in a similar fashion. I suppose it was a grim few years and as the figurehead Michael Kelly was the bad guy in my eyes. I was youngish at the time, and things were more black and white.

Agree he has spoken well though, and we have needed that.

You are perfectly entitled to your views.

However I cannot see how you can reconcile support for the SNP with being a Celtic supporter or indeed a catholic. Its is clear to a blind man that the SNP’s tendancies have not gone away. They have indulged in lies, smears and deciept and are clearly on a campaign to outlaw Irishness and to initimidate Celtic supporters.

There is no other explanation to their behaviour. If it was about sectarianism then they already have laws in place – they just didnt enforce those laws.

The have lied about missing statistics and boy oh boy they must be mightely embarressed by today’s stats.

They are a disgrace and they will lead us into the dark ages.

The Hub Rises, for now, to defend our wonderful support.

The site as most of you will know has been down for a while as I search for a new editor and chief to take over. I have had enough and the final straw was the the threats to my life through a social media site. I took the actual threat with a pinch of salt however with a baby on the way this was all getting too much for me.

I have been sitting back and watching over the past couple of weeks and as my anger has risen so has my will to put finger to keyboard and assist in the defence of our wonderful support.

There is no doubt my fellow bhoys and ghirls that we as a support and a club are under attack from all quarters. There has always been a need for the media, the police and others to paint is with the same brush as the odious and sectarian supporters who occupy the blue half of the city.

They are just as bad as each other. That is the cry.

    The crime? Singing political songs.

These songs are now deemed as ‘offensive’ but this is nothing new to us. Everything we are about, everything we stand for is offensive to this country. Our proud Irish heritage and our all inclusive policy is offensive. The very appearance of our hooped top is offensive to this country. WE are offensive to this country, this all according to a population steeped in anti Irish and anti Catholic bigotry.

Dont be naive to think that when the section of our support that sings the ‘offensive’ add-ons cease to do so that this campaign will stop. This is just the beginning.

The next in line will be let the people sing and Fields of Athenrye. Any display of our ‘offensive’ Irish heritage will be challenged. This is a campaign aimed at the very heart of our great club.

The relationship between the police and Celtic fans has dropped to a worrying level. Our very own GB are treated and hounded like criminals. A 17 years old boy arrested and detained for allegedly singing an add on to a song. A song which I may add can be purchased on cd in HMV and on ITunes. We are being attacked for singing songs that are no different in context than our very own national anthem.

These songs are played in bars all over the world, there are radio stations in the US dedicated to these songs where they discuss and praise their significance in keeping the spirits up of those who were oppressed.

Should we be surprised though? Scotland is the only city in the world that violence ensues when a St Patricks day parade marches through the city. Countries all over the world hold marches in celebration with the backing of the people. Not Scotland

Instead Scotland allows dozens of sectarian marches to rampage through our streets. Marches who’s organisers are allowed to antagonise by taking their band of merry arseho*es through catholic areas and by as many chapels as possible.

Many Celtic fans have lost their lifes for the heinous crime of wearing their Celtic top in the wrong place at the wrong time. You don’t hear this happening the other way around. WE ARE NOT THE ONES WITH THE PROBLEM.

With all the talk recently about deleted stats showing the true nature of sectarian attacks against Catholics in this country and the newly released and highly debatable stats I am glad to say thanks to the excellent work of two of our sites recently we can highlight the ridiculousness of Strathclydes finest and their focus on our fans.

CQN posted today links to stats from the British Transport Police that show who exactly has the problem.

detail figures for all recorded incidents here

These stats which are similar every year show that only one club in Scotland has a problem with sectarianism. 99 arrests of which Rangers fans make up half. This is no surprise I have been on the subway with these cretins and it truly is a sight to behold.

Another article highlighted and of course missed by the media was from the Scotsman website. This showed a league table of banning orders handed out to supporters and yes you guessed it. Rangers fans top the league by a mile.

    http://www.scotsman.com/scotland-on-sunday/politics/probe_into_celtic_fans_as_rangers_top_ban_league_1_1963278

Through all these attacks on the Celtic support the very heart and soul of this ‘initiative’ has been forgotten. The SNP have promised to tackle sectarianism in this country. They have promised to tackle it at the grass roots.

Well if the events of the last few weeks ago are anything to go by they are now another enemy to add to our long list.

Now to Paul McBride the media friendly lawyer who called for the GB to be banned from Celtic park. The man has no sway or power over the Celtic support and his words do not carry any weight. We have no time for him and if the GB goes then so do I and many others. Get back in your box Mr McBride.

I have never known such lack of football talk on Celtic blogs and its good to point out that we have a massive game tomorrow. We owe the highlanders a doing but we are also one more bad performance away from throwing away the title.

I believe the team has turned the corner. A win tomorrow and some momentum gained along with Rangers ever growing injury list may see us win the league yet.

I will leave you with a song to warm the cockles.

Proud of our Irish heritage. Let the people sing. For those who are oppressed.

    Celtic Football Club Statement

By: Newsroom Staff on 18 Nov, 2011 13:58

FOLLOWING the release today of figures by the Scottish Government relating to charges under Section 74 of the Criminal Justice Scotland Act 2003 for the year 2010-2011, Celtic Football Club have released the following statement.

“Celtic Football Club welcomes the Crime and Justice report issued today. However, for clarity it is important to explain these figures and place these in context.

”It is noted that Celtic Park is mentioned as being the location for 47 charges. Fourteen of these offences relate to Celtic supporters, with 33 relating to supporters of visiting teams. (figs. provided by the Information Sharing Protocol with Strathclyde Police).

”To again put this in context, during that period approximately one million Celtic supporters visited the stadium, and approximately 35,000 supporters of away teams have attended Celtic Park.

”It is important also to stress that the 14 Celtic supporters involved have all been banned from Celtic Park.

“The vast majority of religiously-aggravated crime does not take place in or around football stadia, with 90 offences reported at stadia out of a total of 693 offences.

”The claim that 231 offences are ‘football-related’ also needs further analysis. The majority of ´football-related´ offences take place away from football stadia .

”In addition, more than 60 per cent of the total number of offences are alcohol-related. It is clear, therefore, that this also re-enforces Celtic´s long-held view that sectarianism and religious prejudice are societal issues and cannot be laid predominantly at the door of football.

”Clearly, as a club open to all since its formation in 1888, Celtic will continue to work strenuously against all forms of bigotry and religious prejudice.

“While the vast majority of offences at Celtic Park have been committed by visiting supporters, it is important that our own support understands that any form of sectarian behaviour is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

“Celtic´s traditions of tolerance, diversity and openness are something we hold very dear and are fundamental to the Club´s ethos.”

THE number of football banning orders (FBOs) issued in Scotland has soared, with new figures revealing a steep rise over the past six months.

Fifty orders were made between April and October this year – a period including football’s summer break – five more than in all of last year.

The figures also show that since the orders were introduced in September 2006 the bulk were granted by sheriffs in the Strathclyde region.

Rangers supporters top the league of shame (77), with twice as many bans as Celtic fans (36) in second. However, the appointment of football liaison prosecutors in the east and north of Scotland, following a pilot in the west, is expected to trigger a rise there.

Most orders in the past six months were for sectarian or violent offences, although there have also been the first related to internet use and six related to racial offences.

The increase in cases has raised questions about the need for new law on offensive behaviour at matches proposed by the Scottish Government.
