The sectarian crime stats they forgot to destroy

1261

I’ve just caught Joe O’Rourke’s article on the Association site about the long-awaited released of statistics on sectarian crime in Scotland.  Joe suggests that the data from 2003 – 2010 was has been destroyed by the Crown Office.  I also hear that the Scottish Government will release entirely irrelevant ‘information’ today, specifically, where offences took place, not which groups were responsible or which groups were targeted by the offenders.

It takes a lot of effort to make sure you destroy data these days, you need to ensure not only that prosecutors permanently delete backups (which I really doubt they do) but also that the police similarly comply.

Fortunately all is not lost.  While it’s just about believable that regional police forces across Scotland and the Crown Office have acted in symmetry on this issue, I could have helped the First Minister, Alex Salmond’s, search for clarity by pointing him in the direction of British Transport Police (BTP).  The Transport Police are a separate force who operate across Britain and are run by the Home Office in London.  They are also a lot less proficient at destroying data.

They previously gave me detailed statistics on all incidents they record in connection with Scottish football for season 2007-08.  One of the most pleasing aspects of the information is the complete eradication of sectarian offences from all but one Scottish club, so the First Minister will be delighted to learn he has a smaller problem on his hands than he perhaps knew.  According to BTP, 11 arrests were made for sectarian offences in total, 10 Rangers fans and one Northern Ireland fan.

You can see the detail figures for all recorded incidents here (the majority of which are for non-sectarian issues).  From a total of 99 incidents (not all of which resulted in arrest), there were six involving Celtic fans, six for Dundee United, seven for Motherwell, four for Hibernian and five each for Aberdeen and Hearts.  Rangers fans were involved in a total of 48 incidents.

The BPT figures also make it clear that most incidents occur when fans travel to away venues.  The Force also confirmed that incidents surrounding the 2008 Uefa Cup final in Manchester were not included in these statistics.

To further aid Mr Salmond in his search for clarity on this issue, he can contact British Transport Police with a Freedom of Information request here, where they will be able to provide him (or you) with up to date stats.

The Hun can deal with our Irishness.

He cannot deal with our Jacobite contribution.

Let the Green Brigade hit them with what they cannot deal with.

Celtic Trust Statement – Campbell Corrigan

    ——————————————————————————–

    Correcton of press coverage

Recent press coverage of a meeting between Mr Corrigan and the Celtic supporters’ organisations has been very misleading and we felt it necessary to present a correct version for our members and for the Celtic support.

Following the Hibs game and the behaviour of the police on that day, the Celtic Trust and the Celtic Supporters’ Association both separately asked for a meeting with Celtic to discuss this issue. We met together with Celtic on the Wednesday after the game (2/11/11) and expressed our views. We agreed to request, through Celtic, a meeting with the Match Commander, Mr Eddie Smith. We were originally given the impression that this meeting would take place on the Friday and, when this proved impossible, early the following week. However, we were then told that Mr Smith, who we have met with a number of times, was now refusing to meet with Celtic supporters’ organisations. The CSA and CT wrote to his Divisional Commander Wayne Mawson and asked if he would meet to consider our complaints and the fact that Mr Smith was refusing to meet us. He effectively refused to meet us by saying he would only discuss matters other than the ones that had been raised. A second letter was sent asking who, of an equivalent rank or higher, was willing to meet us to discuss our concerns. On Tuesday of this week (15/11/11) we were advised that ACC Corrigan wished to have a meeting with all the supporters’ organisations (CSA, CT, Green Brigade, ARCSC and AICSC). With the exception of the GB, we agreed to the meeting. On Wednesday we were extremely disturbed to find that there was inflammatory and misleading coverage in the Daily Record of the proposed meeting. It gave the impression that we were being summonsed to discuss bad behaviour by Celtic supporters, it attacked our colleagues, the Green Brigade and it appeared to focus on singing. This is not what the meeting was intended to be about and it is not possible to have a constructive dialogue under these circumstances. Therefore we will not be attending the meeting with Mr Corrigan scheduled for Friday (17/11/11).

However, we are a responsible supporters’ organisation and we are always willing to enter into constructive dialogue with any organisation or individual in order to advance the interests of our members, of the Celtic supporters generally and of Celtic. For that reason we do not rule out future meetings with Strathclyde Police but these will have to be on the basis of mutual respect and an agreed and published agenda.

  5. Today we can see fully what Michael Kelly was up against in terms of outside influence except it was a 100 times worse and more sleekit. When you think how differently the banks treated him compared to Murray.

Michael Kelly is an honest articulate Celt and proven it time and again. He is as sharp as a tack and we could be doing with his services. He should be given a role at Celtic.

  9. AWE NAW

Can’t agree. Michael Kelly was duplicitous in a regime that led Celtic to the edge of the abyss. I will never forget his lies and deceit

However, having witnessed some of his recent media performances I do believe that he has a role to play. He is clearly both intelligent and articulate, this should be utilised against the dark forces. But imo that should not be in an official capacity. He’s much more use in his current position.

  10. Just catching up, excellent stuff again Paul67 and well done Celtic for finally standing up for the club and telling some home truths this week; if some still doubted the SNP and police were hell bent on blackening the good name of celtic, there can be no doubt now given the misleading way they released their dubious stats today.

you are right ,looks to me like skoosh has set himself up for a move ,his agent may have advised him that due to his contribution at Celtic it would be in his best interest to run his contract down till he was a free agent .

Can’t say I disagree with him as his contribution so far would not have led to many 5m plus bids from anywhere IMO .

So my advice to PL is don’t throw good money after bad let some other EPL club throw their not so hard earned at skoosh and his agent

    Sir Kojo.

The issue of the payment demanded by Brown’s agent being THE stumbling block in the completion of a new contract is not new.

It was mentioned at least two months ago,and it appears that absolutely no progress has been made.

Brown wears a smiling carapace, while he takes our money.

He is paid to be a footballer..not an acrobat or gymnast.

It was noticeable that he has been injured since his idiotic attempt to leap onto, and straddle Kris Commons shoulders..not the most sensible behaviour for someone supposedly struggling with long-term injury.

Good riddance to bad rubbish !

As for Darren O’Dea,I believe that he is on a season-long loan with Leeds, with his contact expiring in June. I don’t know whether he has a release clause in his contract, allowing him to be recalled to Parkhead.

Unfortunately,I have further bad news to impart….he has debased himself by acquiring a collection of unsightly tattoos on his forearms.

What would his fellow alumnus ,Phylvis, have to say about that….certainly NOT Awesome..!

Well done to Celtic FC for their succinct comments and analysis on the figures announced by the Scottish Govt and the police. It makes for clear reading and highlights the SNP governments lack of experience and sense.

The information from the BTP also highlights the lack of understanding that persists in coming out of this SNP crowd.

Re Michael, I agree. I’d guess the media first revisited Mr Kelly in the hope of unearthing another spiteful, bitter former Celtic man but his performances to date have confounded them ( and me), thankfully.

How much longer his opinion is sought we’ll see, but imo he is better used as an external force. He hasn’t put a foot wrong recently.

If he were ever to attain another official position at the Club I’m afraid he would be demonised and undermined by our partial media.

    I agree with you.

Notwithstanding Kelly’s previous, it is now that is important.

On two occasions, he has risen to the challenge on dehalf of Celtic and, I believe, his stance carries more weight from being from outside of the Boardroom; i.e., not espousing the official club line.

  21. BBC Scotland news do a piece about sectarian offences without mentioning that RCs are the victims in 60% of the incidents!!! Wtf

  22. EDM 17:52,

When I first read that yesterday I thought that the BBC website had been ‘Aw-Naw’d’. Even the prosecutors name had me belly-laughin. On reflection though, this guy is obviously ill and should “be more pitied than scorned” as my old gran used to say.

What intrigued me about the story was the court being told how he had been warned already by the polis to stop (as he stood on a chair with a red hand flag on his back shouting sectarian abuse) I.e. at which point was the offence committed.

I was hoping they were keeping their powder dry till some formal comment was made following the SPL and UEFA reviews.

I am now convinced that this is the case. The government produced stats the way the wanted them presented and the club issued a pretty stiff, and supportive, rebuttal within two hours.
