The tens of millions Rangers denied SPL clubs

885

Last year we attempted to quantify the money other SPL clubs were denied by Rangers improperly registering football players – on the assumption that being found guilty of improperly registering football players was actually worthy of punishment.

Below is an excerpt of the article and figures:

Some of the losses were easier to calculate than others.  For example, it was easy to calculate that when Rangers won the title in 2009 with improperly registered players, earning automatic qualification to the Champions League group stage, they denied Celtic £15m European earnings, plus £340k SPL prize money. Other losses are less clear, specifically when a club was denied a place in a qualifying round for the Champions League or Uefa Cup, which they may or may not have progressed from.

We have established three figures for each club in the SPL during the season just finished, to cover the period from 2000 to 2012:

Minimum loss:
The absolute minimum each club was denied from European and SPL prize money as a result of Rangers finishing above them with ineligible players.

Weighted loss:
The figure based on Scottish clubs gaining entry to Champions League/Europa League (Uefa Cup) group stages from 20% of their qualifying campaigns (which is slightly less than trend).

Maximum loss:
The maximum a club could have achieved if it qualified for the European group stage it was denied entry to.

Out estimates take no account of the subsequent effect money has on future years.  For example, If Celtic earned an additional £15m from entering the Champions League group stage in 2009-10 their league challenge for that season would have been £15m stronger, and Rangers £15m weaker, potentially resulting in consequences in future years.

This multiplier effect would have benefited Celtic but it would be likely to have a greater effect on other clubs, some of whom would be denied the enormous percentage increase in budget automatic qualification to European group stages would have brought.

Hearts finished immediately behind Celtic and Rangers more often than any other club over the period and suffer the greatest potential losses, even more so than Celtic.  Hibernian, Aberdeen, Dundee United and Motherwell also suffered significant losses.

Several clubs got nowhere near European football over the period, and some of the 11 spent only a few years in the SPL but each club lost over £1m.

Figures for each club are:

Hearts
Maximum: £72.3m
Weighted: £16.3m
Minimum: £6.2m

Celtic
Maximum: £46.7m
Weighted: £21.9m
Minimum: £17.4m

Hibernian
Maximum: £34.8m
Weighted: £8.4m
Minimum: £3.6m

Aberdeen
Maximum: £21.1m
Weighted: £5.5m
Minimum: £2.7m

Dundee United
Maximum: £20.8m
Weighted: £5.2m
Minimum: £2.4m

Motherwell
Maximum: £16.7m
Weighted: £4.4m
Minimum: £2.1m

Kilmarnock
Maximum: £5.1m
Weighted: £1.9m
Minimum: £1.3m

Dunfermline
Maximum: £3.4m
Weighted: £1.8m
Minimum: £1.5m

Inverness
Maximum: £1.3m
Weighted: £1.3m
Minimum: £1.3m

St Johnstone
Maximum: £1.1m
Weighted: £1.1m
Minimum: £1.1m

St Mirren
Maximum: £1.1m
Weighted: £1.1m
Minimum: £1.1m

In the event Rangers fielded ineligible players during the period under consideration, which everyone apart from Neil Doncaster knows, and even he will be unable to deny next week, we know the following:

Rangers received a minimum of £40.9m which should have gone to the 11 other clubs, assuming each club lost all their European group stage qualifying campaigns.  This calculation does not include earnings from clubs now in the Scottish Football League, such as Hamilton Accies or [then]Dundee.

If Scottish clubs progressed to the group stages of European competition on only 20% of their qualifying campaigns the loss would be £69.0m.

The figure for total potential losses if clubs successfully progressed to every European group stage is, as the figure for 100% failure, more illustrative than likely, but the maximum cost to the 11 SPL clubs is £224.6m.

You can read our calculations here. European income figures were sources from Uefa data.

The people who really matter in this entire debacle are those who buy tickets for Celtic Park, Pittodrie, Easter Road, Tynecastle, Tannadice, Fir Park and elsewhere. It is patently clear that the game in Scotland is failing fans and clubs alike. It is time for fans of SPL clubs to unite and move beyond the busted grip of the SFA.

Only SPL fans, working together, can ensure each of clubs has a viable future.

  1. If the MSM demanded the truth this would come to a head.

I know it will never happen, not in this Country.

Internet bampottery is a slow process.

  2. By the way, has anyone seen a statement from Puma?

Not so fast to make the big announcement, were they?

It’s a local deal, no big deal, not worth making a fuss over. Puma is not a bad company. Local reps, looking for a bit of growth, have swallowed the Charles Green putting-on-the-Ritz fantasies and thought they had little to lose.

It will be interesting to see if they make anything of this in the weeks ahead, or ever.

  3. Brilliant evening at CP tonight with the Lisbon Lions.

Bertie Auld can tell a story!!!

Archie MacPherson came over very well. Some good stories from him.

Paul67, hope you and your family enjoyed it as well.

[87] Mr McKenzie explained to us that SPL Rule D1.13 had hitherto been understood to mean that if, at the time of registration, a document was not lodged as required, the consequence was that a condition of registration was broken and the player automatically became ineligible to play in terms of SPL Rule D1.11.

How on earth could any sensible person understand anything else on this point!?

If I lied on my CV about having a degree to get a job, then got the degree by studying in my own time while doing that job. Would I be sacked?

    Aye.

  5. Lord Nimmo Smith did not have to accept the evidence of Bryson or anyone else.

Heads of tribunals can and often do, anything they think fit. They can say that black is white if that is what they want it to be. They are bound by guidelines of law but their judgement in a case like this is just that, theirs.

LNS chose to believe the unbelievable.

For those who see our judges as superior beings with the wisdom of Solomon and the virtue of Mother Theresa I suggest that you get out more.

Try going into one of our courts and watch a bully judge/sheriff in action one day and it may disabuse you of these fine notions.

Judges are lawyers and like plumbers, labourers, priests, or whores there are good, bad and indifferent ones.

I think you would have a wee chance of keeping your job if it was at the SFA, and if you followed the right rigmarole with your trouser leg.

Inter sevco are lurching to their next, inevitable crisis. Chuckles must be so relieved that the latest circus has allowed him to slip the shirt deal ( selling the jerseys ) into the public domain as a precursor to the renaming of the midden. Chuckles will get his money, issue another ‘him or me’ ultimatum and then p1ss off.

Delahunt said tonight that the thought had occurred to him that as these were loans, DM could increase his wealth significantly by calling them in, cue embarrassed stuttering.

The loans were made, not by minty, but by independent trustees who independently administered the trusts without any influence from either SDM or anyone directly connected with his 100 companies.

Minty feels vindicated by both the FTT and LNS, he knew there wasn’t a problem…which makes his decision to sell a company (valued at £5.5M by D & P without a league to play in) for £1 to the swivel-eyed business genius CW smell like a skunk’s underpants.

  11. Absolutely brilliant night at Paradise tonight. The Lions as usual were hilarious , emotional and inspiritational.

    These lads truly are immortal.

Erchie McPherson was very respectful as well, went way up in my estimation .

Full marks to the guy at the Q&s who asked the Lions if dual contracts were kicking about on their day?

Wee Bobby said naw but we knew the refs didnae like us !!!!!

As I said last night, Nimmo Smith, and the SPL, couldn’t believe their luck when Bryson (the SFA) gave them a get-out.

  14. From TSFM

Celtic have said all that they can in public, that does not mean they have accepted this bizarre ruling.

However the decision is to go before the SPL Board but no date given

    http://www.scotprem.com/content/default.asp?page=s2&newsid=12131&back=home

    “SPL Statement – Independent Commission

The SPL Board appointed the Independent Commission to consider all aspects of the above matter and at no point provided any direction to the Commission on any aspect of the case.

The SPL Board notes that the Commission has upheld a number of complaints against Rangers OldCo and that Rangers OldCo has been found to have breached SPL and Scottish FA Rules over an 11-year period in relation to the non-disclosure of financial arrangements involving many of its Players.

The SPL Board are assured by the integrity of the process followed and thank The Rt Hon Lord Nimmo Smith and his colleagues, Nicholas Stewart QC and Charles Flint QC, for their time and effort.

The Board wishes to GIVE THE DETAIL OF THE DECISION FURTHER CONSIDERATION at its next meeting.”

Celtic are but one voice there and need other clubs to have their say. the SPL Board consists of Ralph Topping (SPL Chairman), Neil Doncaster (SPL Chief Executive), Eric Riley (Celtic FC), Stephen Thompson (Dundee United FC), Duncan Fraser (Aberdeen FC) and Michael Johnston (Kilmarnock FC).

It is unclear if only they will consider whether to accept LNS or not but supporters of Celtic, Hibs,Dundee Utd, Aberdeen and Kilmarnock at least but preferably all SPL club supporters should contact their club and say that this bizarre judgement flies in the face of what fans demand of football’s governing bodies and they will expect the SPL Board to seek clarification of a judgement that on the face of it flies in the face of the sporting integrity the registration process was desiged to protect. The damage to Scottish Football as a result of not clarifying where the SPL stand on this key issue of sporting integrity will be incalculable.

  15. 19LisbonBhoy67 on

Is the punishment suggested by LNS merely a recommended punishment? And not necessarily a punishment that the SPL Board have to follow through with?

Can the SPL Board look at the findings and strip titles if they think this recommended punishment doesnt fit the crime?

Should the SFA restrospectively strip Scottish & League Cups (no laughing!!) due to the improperly registered players as they have expelled clubs etc from these competitions for minor ‘administration errors’?

If anyone can clear these questions up for me then it’d be greatly appreciated….

  16. Tomorrows another game.

Are we clinging on in the hope of justice coming from the SPL?

I think not, that was there get out card, the whole Rangers debacle has been orchestrated to ensure the minimum of fuss, the only reason they are not in the SPL is down to supporters saying….”aye that’ll be right….feck off”. Prepare for more of the same I’m afraid…

    Your pal

  18. A lot of comment along the lines of What did we expect, same as it ever was, we just need to make sure we demolish them on the park etc.

Going by that reckoning the Old Firm is clearly alive and well. So the whole farce will fade into the distance along with Farrygate and Dougie Dougie as another couple of chapters in the Paranoid Celtic books and lists of travesties that have gone on for the last 125 years.

Just another outrage and on we go….

Am struggling to get my head round that. Rangers died, but we carry on and continue the never ending battle against them anyway, in a rigged and totally ridiculed game? That’s a hard one to take, but that is exactly what will happen over the next few years if we go with that line of thinking.

And then there is the other side, why should, or more to the point, how could you give up on being a part of the experience of being a Celtic man/woman?

You cant, it is a condition, a state of mind, a celebration or a way of life, call it what you like.

How do you square the two?

This farce won’t take away from what Celtic is all about as an institution but we are demeaned for ever by competing, therefore validating the current set up.

  19. Big Nan @23:23 “Lord Nimmo Smith did not have to accept the evidence of Bryson or anyone else.”

What choice do we have but to keep supporting the club, we can’t walk away, we can’t turn our backs, it’s in our DNA.

It’s only been the past few years that the support are getting better informed, the internet will prevail, it will take time, but it will be sorted, in spite of the msm, the bampots will win at the end of the day.

Unfortunatly it won’t be in my lifetime, but I never thought I would see the huns grubbing about in the bottom tier, no disrespect to the clubs who inhabit the bottom tier.

Aye, they have their problems, and long may they continue to haunt them.
