The tens of millions Rangers denied SPL clubs

885

Last year we attempted to quantify the money other SPL clubs were denied by Rangers improperly registering football players – on the assumption that being found guilty of improperly registering football players was actually worthy of punishment.

Below is an excerpt of the article and figures:

Some of the losses were easier to calculate than others.  For example, it was easy to calculate that when Rangers won the title in 2009 with improperly registered players, earning automatic qualification to the Champions League group stage, they denied Celtic £15m European earnings, plus £340k SPL prize money. Other losses are less clear, specifically when a club was denied a place in a qualifying round for the Champions League or Uefa Cup, which they may or may not have progressed from.

We have established three figures for each club in the SPL during the season just finished, to cover the period from 2000 to 2012:

Minimum loss:
The absolute minimum each club was denied from European and SPL prize money as a result of Rangers finishing above them with ineligible players.

Weighted loss:
The figure based on Scottish clubs gaining entry to Champions League/Europa League (Uefa Cup) group stages from 20% of their qualifying campaigns (which is slightly less than trend).

Maximum loss:
The maximum a club could have achieved if it qualified for the European group stage it was denied entry to.

Out estimates take no account of the subsequent effect money has on future years.  For example, If Celtic earned an additional £15m from entering the Champions League group stage in 2009-10 their league challenge for that season would have been £15m stronger, and Rangers £15m weaker, potentially resulting in consequences in future years.

This multiplier effect would have benefited Celtic but it would be likely to have a greater effect on other clubs, some of whom would be denied the enormous percentage increase in budget automatic qualification to European group stages would have brought.

Hearts finished immediately behind Celtic and Rangers more often than any other club over the period and suffer the greatest potential losses, even more so than Celtic.  Hibernian, Aberdeen, Dundee United and Motherwell also suffered significant losses.

Several clubs got nowhere near European football over the period, and some of the 11 spent only a few years in the SPL but each club lost over £1m.

Figures for each club are:

Hearts
Maximum: £72.3m
Weighted: £16.3m
Minimum: £6.2m

Celtic
Maximum: £46.7m
Weighted: £21.9m
Minimum: £17.4m

Hibernian
Maximum: £34.8m
Weighted: £8.4m
Minimum: £3.6m

Aberdeen
Maximum: £21.1m
Weighted: £5.5m
Minimum: £2.7m

Dundee United
Maximum: £20.8m
Weighted: £5.2m
Minimum: £2.4m

Motherwell
Maximum: £16.7m
Weighted: £4.4m
Minimum: £2.1m

Kilmarnock
Maximum: £5.1m
Weighted: £1.9m
Minimum: £1.3m

Dunfermline
Maximum: £3.4m
Weighted: £1.8m
Minimum: £1.5m

Inverness
Maximum: £1.3m
Weighted: £1.3m
Minimum: £1.3m

St Johnstone
Maximum: £1.1m
Weighted: £1.1m
Minimum: £1.1m

St Mirren
Maximum: £1.1m
Weighted: £1.1m
Minimum: £1.1m

In the event Rangers fielded ineligible players during the period under consideration, which everyone apart from Neil Doncaster knows, and even he will be unable to deny next week, we know the following:

Rangers received a minimum of £40.9m which should have gone to the 11 other clubs, assuming each club lost all their European group stage qualifying campaigns.  This calculation does not include earnings from clubs now in the Scottish Football League, such as Hamilton Accies or [then]Dundee.

If Scottish clubs progressed to the group stages of European competition on only 20% of their qualifying campaigns the loss would be £69.0m.

The figure for total potential losses if clubs successfully progressed to every European group stage is, as the figure for 100% failure, more illustrative than likely, but the maximum cost to the 11 SPL clubs is £224.6m.

You can read our calculations here. European income figures were sources from Uefa data.

The people who really matter in this entire debacle are those who buy tickets for Celtic Park, Pittodrie, Easter Road, Tynecastle, Tannadice, Fir Park and elsewhere. It is patently clear that the game in Scotland is failing fans and clubs alike. It is time for fans of SPL clubs to unite and move beyond the busted grip of the SFA.

Only SPL fans, working together, can ensure each of clubs has a viable future.

We are all Tims but you’ve still gotta call it as you see it. Trying to smear them with the right wing bogey man mantra of commi is a little infantile.

    Got to go.

    C’mon the Celts

  2. Don’t you just love the suggestion from Sevco that it’s now time to draw a line and move on.

After all the threats about how they could never accept ‘title stripping’. Gives you the boak so it does.

    Can`t disagree with that.

Big Nan @23:23 “Lord Nimmo Smith did not have to accept the evidence of Bryson or anyone else.”

You’ve said that before Big Nan but say it again.

    ………………………………………………………………………..

Just for you NtassoollaI will say it again, with a different twist.

In 1992 Derek Donaldson a well-known con man made a telephone call to William Austin Nimmo Smith at his home posing as a reporter for the Daily Telegraph.

Donaldson asked Nimmo if he could visit him to discuss the Nimmo Smith Freil Report which was to be presented to the PM at Westminster the following day. Nimmo Smith agreed to meet Donaldson at his [Nimmo Smith’s] home.

Donaldson then spent £3.0 on having business cards printed in the name of Alan MacDonald (the name he had used when phoning Nimmo) and went round to the Nimmo Smith mansion in Edinburgh’s New Town.

He showed Nimmo Smith his business card, which had the Daily Telegraph’s address on it and say for hours listening to the details of the highly confidential report being given to him. Donaldson also taped the entire conversation.

The business card was reproduced in a front, and two-page centre spread, article the following day by the Sun entitled: “How I mugged the man from the crown office”:

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/scottishlawreporter/5782657530/meta/

Now maybe Nimmo Smith shouldn’t have told Donaldson/MacDonald the details of his enquiry before he told the Prime Minister and Parliament, but he had to believe that Donaldson/MacDonald was a bona fide journalist for the Daily Telegraph………….. because he (the con man) told him so.

Well at least that is the logic that says Nimmo Smith had no option to accept Alexander (Sandy) Bryson’s explanation of the SFA’s registration procedures!

For the sake of argument let’s accept that simplistic logic.

It still leaves a nagging doubt in my mind; how did Nimmo Smith & Co come to the conclusion that Rangers never got a competitive advantage by paying players undisclosed, tax-avoidance-payments totalling £47 million over 11 years?

    I have it!

Rangers shareholder Campbell Ogilvie told Nimmo Smith that his old club never got an edge over their competitors!

Nimmo Smith would have to believe Ogilvie because he is an upstanding bloke and the “finest administrator in the game”.

    Everybody knows that.

  5. Macjay1 agree on the field matters most. however we have not improved dramatically. We have had a great run in Europe this season. However we have allowed too many trophies to slip away under Lennys control. There have too many weak performances starting with Ross County in the cup, the league loss at ICT that cost us a title right through to the most recent cup exit to St Mirren. In my view Celtic should have had back to back trebles. We have underachieved in tems of resources we have versus the competition. The domestic fare this year has been shocking and many fans will not renew STs next season ; Tuesday being another example of a poorly motivated Celtic team.

Off the field the oldco has died. The newco has bought most of the oldco , however it had no rights over the player assets. With that clown MCCoist in charge there is no danger of the newco registering any success; although a Ramsden cup should not be beyond him.

All the EBTs, Title Stripping is irrelevant for me. Rangers died and a new club is in place. Was Winding up some newco supporters yesterday on a flight back to Scotland about this; they want to change the discussion. The clever ones ( and there are not so many ) know they are a newco and the are easy pickings.

One thing that does irk me is Campbell Ogilivie. He has cheated throughout this affair from day 1. He probably leant on Bryson. As some whom know me I am not a fan of John Fleming the refs supervisor. I am informed he had tic leanings when he was at BT. Although a Dallas appointee he has succumbed to RC Ogilvie ( ” I am the only RC at Ibrox” ) during Ogilvies regular chats to discuss refereeing appointments. Ogilvie is a lot smarter than Peat and will leaven stone unturned in helping the Ibrox club.

At the heart of oldcos demise was desire to equal the Lisbon Lions and beat 9 in a row. This they failed to do and put their club on the mortuary slab. At the heart of this achievements was King Billy. It’s surely time the club stepped up and this a special event for Caesr ( some well meaning Celtic fans have discussed but I don’t hear of any progress).

I hope we beat St Mirren today ; but not sure if the team will be motivated. Anyways I have joined my good lady in London for the weekend , thought I was going to escape.

A double is mandatory this season or it’s another football failure in the trophy collection KPI.

BRTH made a very good point yesterday re Bryson’s evidence

The SFA were the appellate body …if LNS rejected his evidence …then the matter would have been appeal,ed to the SFA who would have overturned the verdict

IMO it’s an SFA stitch up …LNS …is not a witness in the proceedings and can only consider the evidence in front of him

Also …two independent QC s sat on this tribunal

I agree that it is unsatisfactory but believe that Ogilvie and the other members of the SFA cabal have sacrificed the reputation of a Scottish football for a liquidated club ….Ogilvie will go soon …his work is done

  20. swally infered that LNS was experienced and knows his job , he is hardly qualified in his trade to comment on another persons actions in doing their job, and why do them not understand that they were found guilty, its just the punishment that upsets me, though i think most of us in timland expected the sham that it is, i just hope now that the sfa and spl are made accountable for more destruction to the game and its supporters

  21. Time to get back to winning ways. It’s been a season of highs and lows but for it to end memorably we need to advance in the cup today.
