The tens of millions Rangers denied SPL clubs

885

Last year we attempted to quantify the money other SPL clubs were denied by Rangers improperly registering football players – on the assumption that being found guilty of improperly registering football players was actually worthy of punishment.

Below is an excerpt of the article and figures:

Some of the losses were easier to calculate than others.  For example, it was easy to calculate that when Rangers won the title in 2009 with improperly registered players, earning automatic qualification to the Champions League group stage, they denied Celtic £15m European earnings, plus £340k SPL prize money. Other losses are less clear, specifically when a club was denied a place in a qualifying round for the Champions League or Uefa Cup, which they may or may not have progressed from.

We have established three figures for each club in the SPL during the season just finished, to cover the period from 2000 to 2012:

Minimum loss:
The absolute minimum each club was denied from European and SPL prize money as a result of Rangers finishing above them with ineligible players.

Weighted loss:
The figure based on Scottish clubs gaining entry to Champions League/Europa League (Uefa Cup) group stages from 20% of their qualifying campaigns (which is slightly less than trend).

Maximum loss:
The maximum a club could have achieved if it qualified for the European group stage it was denied entry to.

Out estimates take no account of the subsequent effect money has on future years.  For example, If Celtic earned an additional £15m from entering the Champions League group stage in 2009-10 their league challenge for that season would have been £15m stronger, and Rangers £15m weaker, potentially resulting in consequences in future years.

This multiplier effect would have benefited Celtic but it would be likely to have a greater effect on other clubs, some of whom would be denied the enormous percentage increase in budget automatic qualification to European group stages would have brought.

Hearts finished immediately behind Celtic and Rangers more often than any other club over the period and suffer the greatest potential losses, even more so than Celtic.  Hibernian, Aberdeen, Dundee United and Motherwell also suffered significant losses.

Several clubs got nowhere near European football over the period, and some of the 11 spent only a few years in the SPL but each club lost over £1m.

Figures for each club are:

Hearts
Maximum: £72.3m
Weighted: £16.3m
Minimum: £6.2m

Celtic
Maximum: £46.7m
Weighted: £21.9m
Minimum: £17.4m

Hibernian
Maximum: £34.8m
Weighted: £8.4m
Minimum: £3.6m

Aberdeen
Maximum: £21.1m
Weighted: £5.5m
Minimum: £2.7m

Dundee United
Maximum: £20.8m
Weighted: £5.2m
Minimum: £2.4m

Motherwell
Maximum: £16.7m
Weighted: £4.4m
Minimum: £2.1m

Kilmarnock
Maximum: £5.1m
Weighted: £1.9m
Minimum: £1.3m

Dunfermline
Maximum: £3.4m
Weighted: £1.8m
Minimum: £1.5m

Inverness
Maximum: £1.3m
Weighted: £1.3m
Minimum: £1.3m

St Johnstone
Maximum: £1.1m
Weighted: £1.1m
Minimum: £1.1m

St Mirren
Maximum: £1.1m
Weighted: £1.1m
Minimum: £1.1m

In the event Rangers fielded ineligible players during the period under consideration, which everyone apart from Neil Doncaster knows, and even he will be unable to deny next week, we know the following:

Rangers received a minimum of £40.9m which should have gone to the 11 other clubs, assuming each club lost all their European group stage qualifying campaigns.  This calculation does not include earnings from clubs now in the Scottish Football League, such as Hamilton Accies or [then]Dundee.

If Scottish clubs progressed to the group stages of European competition on only 20% of their qualifying campaigns the loss would be £69.0m.

The figure for total potential losses if clubs successfully progressed to every European group stage is, as the figure for 100% failure, more illustrative than likely, but the maximum cost to the 11 SPL clubs is £224.6m.

You can read our calculations here. European income figures were sources from Uefa data.

The people who really matter in this entire debacle are those who buy tickets for Celtic Park, Pittodrie, Easter Road, Tynecastle, Tannadice, Fir Park and elsewhere. It is patently clear that the game in Scotland is failing fans and clubs alike. It is time for fans of SPL clubs to unite and move beyond the busted grip of the SFA.

Only SPL fans, working together, can ensure each of clubs has a viable future.

If fans and/or shareholders could show prejudice of economic and other interests against them, then a complaint before the EC could be filed

  3. Looking forward to the game.hope the crowds feelings come across loud and clear. Buddies too.

Would be great if every fan at every game had a “cheats” or “shame” placard to hold up on say, 47 minutes.

  5. Anyone who thinks that the SFA went to great lengths to save Rangers is totally missing the point.

The SFA went to great lengths to save……………the SFA

If this verdict went the way most people were expecting, what would have been the consequences for the SFA.

11 years of total incompetence at best.

    Maybe even a little corruption

Investigations into cosy relationships with certain clubs

Maybe even a smattering of sectarianism, who knows.

We might never get to know now.

Don’t ever forget the SFA’s standing in World football

or the unique position of the Home Nations.

Anyone looking for justice will not get it here no matter how many “Independent”

    inquiries there are.

We might find more friends with those who are unimpressed with the special privileges

that are afforded the Home Nations

    Juventus news ——-

    Napoli 1 —— Juve 1 .

Draw was a fair result . Juve 6 points clear of Napoli at the top of Serie A [ effectively 7 clear given the head to head ].

Chiellini played for 90 minutes . He scored a right good headed goal from a fab cross from the excellent Pirlo . Vucinic missed 2 sitters . Vucinic was jeered throughout the game by large sections of the Juve support…

Not the prettiest of goals —- a physical scrap.. One TV pundit said ——- ” I saw more rugby than football ”

There was violence before , during and after the game . Juve team bus was bricked by Napoli Ultras / windscreen shattered / fireworks launched at the bus after the windscreen was broken . Pitched battles between Napoli Ultras and Juve Ultras in the centre of Napoli . The Juve corteo found time to torch a car whilst en route to the stadium . Several policeman injured.

Why were Scottish cup results overturned? If registration is fine until revoked, then registration was fine during said cup games.

  15. Baku, You are totally correct, they are getting the crumbs that fall from The Master’s table. Chuck is never shy about mentioning amounts of money and loves to boast about their riches. Strange his sudden shyness on what the deals are worth. I’m still very annoyed at Dimmo’s nonsense (although within next 10 minutes I intend ditching my anger and get into match mode) but the reality is whilst past glories are well and fine its the future that is most important. They have a minimum of 2 more years in the wilderness by which time we will have 4 in a row, with any modicum of good management we should dominate them for years after they return, in whatever guize they return be it Zombies or Zombies mark2. Ten in a row is a realistic goal, providing we stay in the Scottish game. If we leave then we will never have to worry about discrimination again.

Nothing wrong with Skodas mate they are are good car. The point is C&C are looking at their market for potential loss of income from zombies not drinking Magners. Answer, hey presto, get Blackthorn to sponsor them. It’s a win- win situation for C&C, the point I am making is that essentially we are back to both teams Us and the zombies having the same sponsors, something the majority of Celtic fans, I know, did not want.

  17. Be good to get back to the football today but it will be interesting to hear the various lines of spin on their guilty verdict and sham punishment. I hope some of our so called journos keep or start shining a light on it.

However the biggest realisation for me this week was how insignificant they are in sporting terms just now; in my ‘heavily Celtic supporting’ workplace The Rangers drawing with lowly Stirling Albion barely got a mention…imagine that a couple of years ago.

Hope the Hoops turn up today, I’m sure they will.

Conte slapped down a TV pundit last night for suggesting that progress to the next round of the CL was guaranteed.. He said he expected a hard game and would field the strongest possible team . Pressure from the fans may result in Vucinic and Giovinco being rested [ the support have really turned on those 2 ]

There is no way this season will be diminished…….this the first season where one of the worst scandals in World Sport resulted in the perpetrators being removed from Scottish Football, where ‘sporting integrity’ prevailed, where corruption was laid bare, where our new young manager took on the best in Europe, and successfully led us to the last 16 ……in addition to that, with a very young squad, he has secured the SPL title and we are still challenging for the Scottish Cup……. It is also a season where hatred has been removed from SPL terracings forever (once sevco go bust also)…….. FANTASTIC SEASON

  21. 67 Heaven, It has been a great season in respect of Huns getting their come uppance and our European exploits. However from the Footballing side of things I believe a Scottish Cup/SPL double is essential to make it a great season. It was almost a given that we would win the SPL, we will get very little recognition for so doing.

Pogmathonyahun aka Laird of the Smiles,

Absolutely win/win for the sponsors, that’s the whole point of sponsorship. I think the biggest problem for the fans was the strips having the same sponsor name on the front of the shirt rather than where the money comes from. The perception of a shared identity to the outside world was the major problem (to me anyway, I can’t speak for everyone).

Very few people outside the fans of both teams will know about the parent company and are unlikely to research it.

Not perfect but a vast improvement in my view.
