The tens of millions Rangers denied SPL clubs

885

Last year we attempted to quantify the money other SPL clubs were denied by Rangers improperly registering football players – on the assumption that being found guilty of improperly registering football players was actually worthy of punishment.

Below is an excerpt of the article and figures:

Some of the losses were easier to calculate than others.  For example, it was easy to calculate that when Rangers won the title in 2009 with improperly registered players, earning automatic qualification to the Champions League group stage, they denied Celtic £15m European earnings, plus £340k SPL prize money. Other losses are less clear, specifically when a club was denied a place in a qualifying round for the Champions League or Uefa Cup, which they may or may not have progressed from.

We have established three figures for each club in the SPL during the season just finished, to cover the period from 2000 to 2012:

Minimum loss:
The absolute minimum each club was denied from European and SPL prize money as a result of Rangers finishing above them with ineligible players.

Weighted loss:
The figure based on Scottish clubs gaining entry to Champions League/Europa League (Uefa Cup) group stages from 20% of their qualifying campaigns (which is slightly less than trend).

Maximum loss:
The maximum a club could have achieved if it qualified for the European group stage it was denied entry to.

Out estimates take no account of the subsequent effect money has on future years.  For example, If Celtic earned an additional £15m from entering the Champions League group stage in 2009-10 their league challenge for that season would have been £15m stronger, and Rangers £15m weaker, potentially resulting in consequences in future years.

This multiplier effect would have benefited Celtic but it would be likely to have a greater effect on other clubs, some of whom would be denied the enormous percentage increase in budget automatic qualification to European group stages would have brought.

Hearts finished immediately behind Celtic and Rangers more often than any other club over the period and suffer the greatest potential losses, even more so than Celtic.  Hibernian, Aberdeen, Dundee United and Motherwell also suffered significant losses.

Several clubs got nowhere near European football over the period, and some of the 11 spent only a few years in the SPL but each club lost over £1m.

Figures for each club are:

Hearts
Maximum: £72.3m
Weighted: £16.3m
Minimum: £6.2m

Celtic
Maximum: £46.7m
Weighted: £21.9m
Minimum: £17.4m

Hibernian
Maximum: £34.8m
Weighted: £8.4m
Minimum: £3.6m

Aberdeen
Maximum: £21.1m
Weighted: £5.5m
Minimum: £2.7m

Dundee United
Maximum: £20.8m
Weighted: £5.2m
Minimum: £2.4m

Motherwell
Maximum: £16.7m
Weighted: £4.4m
Minimum: £2.1m

Kilmarnock
Maximum: £5.1m
Weighted: £1.9m
Minimum: £1.3m

Dunfermline
Maximum: £3.4m
Weighted: £1.8m
Minimum: £1.5m

Inverness
Maximum: £1.3m
Weighted: £1.3m
Minimum: £1.3m

St Johnstone
Maximum: £1.1m
Weighted: £1.1m
Minimum: £1.1m

St Mirren
Maximum: £1.1m
Weighted: £1.1m
Minimum: £1.1m

In the event Rangers fielded ineligible players during the period under consideration, which everyone apart from Neil Doncaster knows, and even he will be unable to deny next week, we know the following:

Rangers received a minimum of £40.9m which should have gone to the 11 other clubs, assuming each club lost all their European group stage qualifying campaigns.  This calculation does not include earnings from clubs now in the Scottish Football League, such as Hamilton Accies or [then]Dundee.

If Scottish clubs progressed to the group stages of European competition on only 20% of their qualifying campaigns the loss would be £69.0m.

The figure for total potential losses if clubs successfully progressed to every European group stage is, as the figure for 100% failure, more illustrative than likely, but the maximum cost to the 11 SPL clubs is £224.6m.

You can read our calculations here. European income figures were sources from Uefa data.

The people who really matter in this entire debacle are those who buy tickets for Celtic Park, Pittodrie, Easter Road, Tynecastle, Tannadice, Fir Park and elsewhere. It is patently clear that the game in Scotland is failing fans and clubs alike. It is time for fans of SPL clubs to unite and move beyond the busted grip of the SFA.

Only SPL fans, working together, can ensure each of clubs has a viable future.

I haven’t posted anything since Thursday due to feeling irritated and annoyed by the LNS result. I have not had the soundest of sleeps since as I have woke early with a nagging sense of injustice.

Rangers cheated. The only way to get closure on this is to take things further legally.

What are our options. Other fans from other clubs feel the same as Paul67 has suggested.

LNS effectively stated that Rangers were guilty of cheating the tax man, didn’t want to disclose the side payments as they would have aroused the tax man and then we have the SFA saying that the players were properly registered because they didn’t withdraw the registrations. Have I got that correct in summary?

So we could wait until the result of the UTT and see if the SFA have any appetite to do anything. Before you laugh, should there not be retrospective action if they are found to have cheated the tax man?

This whole thing stinks to high heaven. Others have suggested that we should accept the LNS enquiry findings, that LNS is a fine up standing gentleman etc. Barcabhoy even suggested we should apologise to Rangers… I take it now the result is out Barcabhoy has made some sort of qualification of that offer?

Will the SFA now make a statement on the findings that one of their member clubs deliberately decieved the governing body in order to operate a dubious tax avoidance scheme. (yet to be proven that it was evasion). Will they make any satatement regarding their employees?

For that matter will the Scottish Government make any statement on their involvement in this affair? Will they seek to clarify that the employment of John McClelland at various points was justified even though he took part in a tax avoidance (possibly evasion) scheme? How much was McClelland paid for the report on Procurement and then IT? How could someone with so much concern for the public purse be so reckless in his tax affairs and those of his club?

Do the Scottish Government need to clarify that they are not heavily conflicted in any way in relation to David Murray? What exactly did Salmond say to the Prime Minister and HMRC or the SFA for that matter?

So many questions and none being asked.

67 – Why did i not think of that before! lol StatingTheObviousCSC. :)

  4. Mullet and Co on

Bryce Curdy, excellent point. Ultimately Rangers did not declare these payments as They saw them as possibly taxable!

But to extend that point into another dimension… why would Duff and Phelps appointed by the Court, an independant administrator… have reason to delay providing evidence on these side letters? WHY? The police also had problems with them. Who were they working for?

  5. I’m reposting this from last night for those who think that we have a different shirt sponsor from the zombies. C&C are playing everybody here. I like to know how much the zombies are getting in relation to us? It was originally highlighted by BMCUW that both Magners and Blackthorn were owned by C&C. There’s an interesting news area in the right of the add detailing the sponsorships of both clubs. Big business playing the paying customers as fools again.

  6. Two parts of this farce that I have not heard since Thursday are ‘the wee tax case’ which I believe was about payments made to Klos and R DeBoer, and the 5 players from ‘the big tax case’ with whom Rangers accepted tax was due.

When LNS claimed no sporting advantage am I right to assume he was purely referring to registration?

  7. The club statement is good enough as a holding statement.

Yes, it draws attention to the crime committed and to the lack of punishment but it then goes on to say that we will continue to attend to our own business and leave the rest to the football authorities.

These are the football authorities which have contrived to corrupt our game in the interests of one club and one section of society.

It is a start but there has to more, surely?

still unhappy about how the spl out of 18 sanction availible came to a fine for a club in liquidation……a WTF decision …..only a fool could come to

the only uplifting outcome was how neil dealt with the msm ( scum)

at a press confrence at parkhead with a cup game against st mirren

all the msm wanted to talk about was RANGERS………mmmm

was pmsl as neil continued to show them for what they are

this rangers the media are all wanting to talk about at a CELTIC press confrence

is that the RFC (il) owing million of pounds to creditors and tax payers along with unpaid fines to the sfa and spl

oh what it would be like to have a sir robert kelly or wee fegus at the helm

the club statement was more or less saying we are watching but sitting on our hands as the theives and chancers run the game into the ground

the statement about the club playing a blinder by their silence ?

we may soon know by the next spl board meeting if any challenge is made or a vote of no confidence against the spl /sfa

all the main members of the sfa and the spl are still in place after the vote on newco getting into div 3

The hordes will no doubt be spouting their bile in “triumph”in theDiv 3 clash with those giants East Stirling. No doubt tv mikes will be turned down.

They may think they have got off with things through two tawdry decisions from the courts re the big tax case and the LNS enquiry.

Deep down though they know they are guilty as sin.

Anyway, let’s hope for a spanking win later today.

  16. the long wait is over on

There is some debate about who said it first and what they actually said but Bill Shankly is famously and frequently misquoted as saying , when asked about the offside rule , “if a player isn’t interfering with play he shouldn’t be on the pitch”

What he actually said , apparently , was this:-

“If a player is not interfering with play or seeking to gain an advantage, then he should be.”

Everything a football club does is intended to gain an advantage over its rivals , even if , on the face of it an action appears to be purely for financial gain. More money means more sporting advantage.

The two are as intertwined as Siamese twins. To conclude otherwise is perverse.

A financial advantage was gained by breaching the rules and so ,inevitably, was a sporting advantage. There can be no other conclusion.

again, mainly because of the front three. It may look lightweight down the wings, but Izzy is hardly defensive, and Sammi is cleverer with his distribution. Mcgeouch is a player on form, and played brilliantly in that role v Dundee.

Today we have bright sunshine and my spirits feel raised because of it, despite of what is happening back in Alba. A nice 5-0 win today against St Mirren would raise my spirits even higher. I cancelled my ESPN subscription last month I’m glad to say, especially when I see that they are on TV about the same time as us. What is that all about?

It is also something which needs to happen within Scottish Football if we are to save the game from corruption and bad governance.

On Monday 4th March 2013, SPL Fans United will become active. These are new website, facebook, twitter and G+ accounts, which need Fans of EVERY club to get involved and to contribute, in order to change Scottish Football for the better. You can find these at:

The idea is to get SPL fans working together in order to pressure Clubs, the SPL and the SFA for much needed change.

The recent findings of Lord Nimmo Smith shocked supporters and clubs alike, and confirmed to many what we already knew. That our game is riddled with greed, corruption, self preservation and self interest.

As individual fan groups, we can do little or nothing to change the status quo, however, as a collective group of fans standing shoulder to shoulder in solidarity, we can act as a catalyst and bring about change.

Q – Why should you get involved?

A – SPL clubs have been robbed of Millions of pounds in revenue.

You purchased season tickets and spent money travelling to and from games, all to watch a sport that was rigged. Here is the minimum amount of cash that has been withheld from your club from 2000 – 2012:

    Aberdeen – Minimum: £2.7m

    Celtic – Minimum: £17.4m

    Dundee United – Minimum: £2.4m

    Dunfirmline – Minimum: £1.5m

    Hearts – Minimum: £6.2m

    Hibs – Minimum: £3.6m

    Inverness – Minimum: £1.3m

    Kilmarnock – Minimum: £1.3m

    Motherwell – Minimum: £2.1m

    St Johnstone – Minimum: £1.1m

    St Mirren – Minimum: £1.1m

The true figures are likely to be much higher. This research was carried out by Celtic Quick News and a link to the article can be found at:

    http://www.celticquicknews.co.uk/?p=11735

The administrators of Scottish Football are not fit for purpose and need to be removed from their cosy positions of power, before they inflict any more damage to a game thats already on its knees.

Doncaster, Regan, Bryson, Ogilvie, et al – The games up. It’s time to go!

To Fans of Aberdeen, Celtic, Dundee, Dundee United, Hearts, Hibs, InvernessCT, Kilmarnock, Motherwell, Ross Co, St Johnstone, St Mirren.

We will win the SPL and get no plaudits for so doing and realistically will exit Europe this week and whilst we will forever remember days like the Barca win, the season will be much diminished if we fail to win the Scottish Cup
