They’d all like to play for Real Madrid

754

Virgil van Dijk is a class defender, one of the best we’ve seen in recent decades, but there’s no revelation in the fact that he would consider moving to the right club at a more testing league; they all would.  The only pertinent fact about Virgil is that several clubs may put that to the test later this year.

The main thing to consider with Virgil is that he’s not likely to ‘Do a Kelvin’, and report as not in the right frame of mind to play, midway through Champions League qualifiers.  With Jason Denayer wanted back in Manchester, it’s important Celtic retain Virgil for the qualifiers, or are sufficiently compensated before then that they can confidently secure the early signatures of prime targets.

From what I hear, Virgil’s been more than professional in his dealings with the club.  He’s not running campaigns to leave and despite the plainly obvious that they would all like to play for Real Madrid, if the right move doesn’t materialise, he’ll get stuck in at Celtic for next season.  So it’s not time to reminisce on favourite VVD moments yet, like the time that wee boy bounced off him at Hampden.

Trophy Day at Celtic Park is coming up on Sunday, 24 May when we play Inverness, when the Foundation will be distributing badges before the game to raise funds for the enormous work they do for the local homeless, the world’s poor, those with autism, those with Downs, and many more people and families who need your care.

You can participate in our annual Trophy Day by volunteering to work with the Foundation before kick-off.  It is genuinely good fun and you get to step into the 127-year-old shoes those who have gone before you.

There are around 100 volunteers and we’re only looking for around 20 more, so get in soon by emailing cfcfoundation@celticfc.co.uk or calling 0141 551 4291.

Hooper should have stayed another season. Ledley should have stayed another season. Victor should have stayed another season.

Big Kelvin Wilson who I always thought looked a bit terrified even for his size should have worked something out to see his children and stayed at least another season because he was finally coming onto a game and started to look a really good defender but wanted back near his children. Honourable and we made good money off him but England is a big draw. These guys can double and sometimes treble their wages. This is the modern footballer. Not many will sit tight and hope for a bigger club. History and agents tell them that they will not get a top 6 team move unless they move south and prove themselves.

£10m+ bid and Celtic will take it.

£30k+ a week wages and players will jump at it.

That is the facts of the modern game and the modern footballer. They stay 2 years up here play in a wonderful atmosphere and play huge European games and win a handful of medals and go South and make the money that will see them comfortable the rest of their lives. Remember Alan Shearer won 1 medal his whole career but won’t regret a thing because he never has to work again with the millions he made down south. They have a confusion down there that money is a mark of success. This is the sad fact of the modern footballer and Sky, agents, pundits and the media will even support that view. It’s fairly sad that players choose money over success but this is the way of the modern world and the players will jump at it and I expect Virgil will be off to the first English team that meet his agents valuation.

If he decides to stay on, even signs a wee extension I will be delighted bit surprised. We know how this plays out.

We’ll need a full strength team versus ICT, if they bring their full strength MIBs again…

    ;o)

  3. Celtic probably don’t have a say if an offer comes in at a certain level. Most contracts have clauses when a certain price is bid then the player makes the decision to go or not por cierto

I have developed a strong dislike for “Barca” these past few years…

Anybody like to remind me of their current debt level ?

  5. We’ll take care of ICT on the last day…. I reckon 4-0…

I mean, after all it’s only 11 players versus 13..

    4th official too ruggyman

At least no one behind the goal this time as barca score

  7. 1-1 magnificent ball from Messi through to Suarez who puts it on a plate for Neymar.

  8. ruggyman,

I’m hoping for at least 10and a couple of them ordered and/or crocked so that they don’t play in the final. 2 of them shouldn’t be anyway.

  9. If ICT’s heaviest ever defeat in professional football is 6-1 , then I hope we are equal to 6-1 until the 95th minute…. Then karma awards us the softest ever penalty….

Craig Gordon steps up, and the 7-1 hammering is complete.

  10. Thought Neymar was offside at original pass, all this second phase carry on makes it impossible for defenders

Harvard Graduate – just proves that there are a lot of educated idiots about :o)

Of course the aforementioned Priory of Sion does exist – but only as a document allegedly “discovered” in the bibliotheque by the same New Age morons who actually placed it there 20 yeas before.

Knights Templar – yep they existed (maybe still do ooooooooer)

Opus Dei – yep it existed and actually still does

    Louvre – Yep still there

Roslyn Chapel – Yep still there

    Vatican – yep still there

No chambers under Roslyn or secret tunnels in the Louvre, but this work of fiction must be true. It’s worse than saying it’s true because I read it in the DR or I heard Hugh Keevins say it.

Joel and Ethan Coen put some text up on the screen telling the audience that their movie “Fargo” was based on true events. It wasn’t, they knew this and just thought it was a good gag to use to add to the fascination factor for their cult movie.

Some poor lassie from Japan, believing it to be true and clearly unbalanced by other life events, flew to Minnesota and tried to find out where Steve Buscemi (I think) hid the money in the snow.

A player is only a man. Don’t like to tempt fate but VVD can get injured like any other man. Press are actually doing a decent job for us. More they talk about £10m rated VVD more the managers down south will believe it. If he played in England it would be £20m but we both know you are buying potential with Virgil right now. He needs the right coaching and right partner. If Man City are smart they will buy VVD and loan both him and Denayer back to us for another year and then play both in their team the following year. That’s how highly rated that pair are. Denayer is a proper defender and VVD is your ball playing centre back. They could be a partnership for ten years or more barring injury for a £10m outlay. Frightening prospect if the new manager of Man City sees the vision. That is nothing in the modern game for a partnership that has the potential to be genuinely world class.

  19. Good Evening Celts

Scorchio here in Santa Ponsa, slightly different from Edinburgh this morning. I’ve looked up Celtic Bars, which show about a dozen “Irish” establishments. I think someone mentioned a good option to catch the Celts on Friday – grateful for a recommendation. Many thanks and HH.
