They’d all like to play for Real Madrid

754

Virgil van Dijk is a class defender, one of the best we’ve seen in recent decades, but there’s no revelation in the fact that he would consider moving to the right club at a more testing league; they all would.  The only pertinent fact about Virgil is that several clubs may put that to the test later this year.

The main thing to consider with Virgil is that he’s not likely to ‘Do a Kelvin’, and report as not in the right frame of mind to play, midway through Champions League qualifiers.  With Jason Denayer wanted back in Manchester, it’s important Celtic retain Virgil for the qualifiers, or are sufficiently compensated before then that they can confidently secure the early signatures of prime targets.

From what I hear, Virgil’s been more than professional in his dealings with the club.  He’s not running campaigns to leave and despite the plainly obvious that they would all like to play for Real Madrid, if the right move doesn’t materialise, he’ll get stuck in at Celtic for next season.  So it’s not time to reminisce on favourite VVD moments yet, like the time that wee boy bounced off him at Hampden.

Trophy Day at Celtic Park is coming up on Sunday, 24 May when we play Inverness, when the Foundation will be distributing badges before the game to raise funds for the enormous work they do for the local homeless, the world’s poor, those with autism, those with Downs, and many more people and families who need your care.

You can participate in our annual Trophy Day by volunteering to work with the Foundation before kick-off.  It is genuinely good fun and you get to step into the 127-year-old shoes those who have gone before you.

There are around 100 volunteers and we’re only looking for around 20 more, so get in soon by emailing cfcfoundation@celticfc.co.uk or calling 0141 551 4291.

I would prefer them to be Tims. Maybe in time they will be. Who knows. Certainly think Broony will be both speak in glowing terms about Celtic. That will do for me.

  2. Is there a anyone on here who if the telly people said “there you go – best hotels, first class air fare, best views in the house, big wedge of dosh and all you have to do is chat with your pals for a couple of minutes” -is there anyone who would knock that back?

    Thought not!

Would rather see the likes of Keane or Scholes than all the old ex-Huns on TV and radio up here !

  3. 3-2 Muller. Another great finish.

    Only the three needed now!

    Just over 15 minutes left.

Xavi on to keep the ball, no doubt.

    Right Tom.

Blow for time up. A long 15 minutes to come.

Hope the scoreline stays the same for you.

Fans like to hear from their players. Just a point I was making earlier. Don’t grudge them the dough. It’s there to be taken. They are taking it BUT imagine Henrik refusing to be interviewed and then popping up on your telly every week talking fitba. It’s no quite right is it? Just my view anyway. Fans must be treated with respect and the players and managers must talk to their paying public.

That combination would give you a decent chance in the CL group games!

Would never want to fall out with a fellow Celt

    ;o)

I watched the frist leg with my boys, enjoyed the game, but for me it was game over at 3-0.

I was invited to Barca supporting family to watch the game tonight but declined.

    My boys don’t understand me…

Anyways, although I can appreciate the level these guys are playing at, the never seen before skills, etc etc it leaves me not cold – but distant.

Not just Barca in particular – there’s debt leaden Real, ManU, Sevco, etc and Chelsea, PSG etc for other reasons.

How many times have my lads seen me hundled over my PC watching Celts v Hamilton when there’s PSG v Marseilles on the box?

    Ha ha

    What was the score anyway?

    Agreed;-)

Just my view mate. Don’t expect anyone else to agree. Just find it a bit unethical. Thought Scholes didn’t do TV interviews because he didn’t like them now he is happy to do it. Make yer mind up son!

    Time to get personal !

Saw some comments on what type of striker we need / want .

In last 10 years, we have only had two strikers who could consistently score big goals on big occasions Hooper and McDonald.

Griffiths may be able to reach that level.

Stokes , JVoH and Samaras were / are either too inconsistent, not capable , or on treatment table

In addition we have had a catalogue full of impairment strikers who have failed ( if you are not familiar with the word impairment see our annual accounts)

What strikes me, is the guys who have worked, have been known to the management and playing squad – we observed both McDonald and Griffiths score against us, whilst Lenny had seen Hooper up close

By comparison, the failures were purchased / borrowed on the basis of statistics in a catalogue – Balde, Puuki, Scepovic, Bangura , Guidetti, Browczek, Rasmussen etc.

With most of these guys, i suspect they were signed

on statistics, a video and at best two or less live games in front of a scout

( Note Murphy is an anomaly in all of this , Lenny saw him up close, he flopped at Celtic, but has done ok since)

    Thoughts?

As we look forward to CL group stages, my big ask is that we dump the catalogues, and spend time looking at players up close.

If we were to lose on Friday and a week on Sunday, because Stevie Frail is running the team, whilst RD, JC and JK are out scouting, i’ll take it.

  13. Anyone else notice the striking facial resemblance between Lewandowski and Ces Fabregas.

Are they twins. I think we should be told.

Aw dae ye? Must have missed the memo ;-)

I like the different views and opinions on here. It’s a boring auld world if we all think the same. Don’t think I have ever called anyone a Hun on here and never will. Wide spectrum of Tims. We once had a Tory member on our bus and the Bhoy is Celtic daft. You either get all politics with him or let him be. We took the latter approach. He didn’t complain about anyone else’s politics or the rebel music. Large lesson in life early doors for me regarding Celtic. People support the club from all backgrounds and angles and it’s what makes the club different. The views people put out on here are interesting and invoke thought and debate. We can argue from time to time and we can even fall out. Some are more stubborn than others and stick to their guns when they should live and let live. We can’t change that attitude tho and that should also be admired. I’m more easy going. If people have a point make it and then time will prove whether they are right or wrong.

  16. Not really, Tom.

After losing the final at home to Chelsea.

They seem to have come to the conclusion that it can add more pressure if it’s ‘local’.

So they say in the pubs anyway.

I know the difference between an interview and a pundit. Money over fans? Modern footballer. My opinion is it doesn’t sit well with me. Wonder what the Man Utd fans think? I don’t think Celtic fans would be chuffed. Just my view of course.
