They’d all like to play for Real Madrid

754

Virgil van Dijk is a class defender, one of the best we’ve seen in recent decades, but there’s no revelation in the fact that he would consider moving to the right club at a more testing league; they all would.  The only pertinent fact about Virgil is that several clubs may put that to the test later this year.

The main thing to consider with Virgil is that he’s not likely to ‘Do a Kelvin’, and report as not in the right frame of mind to play, midway through Champions League qualifiers.  With Jason Denayer wanted back in Manchester, it’s important Celtic retain Virgil for the qualifiers, or are sufficiently compensated before then that they can confidently secure the early signatures of prime targets.

From what I hear, Virgil’s been more than professional in his dealings with the club.  He’s not running campaigns to leave and despite the plainly obvious that they would all like to play for Real Madrid, if the right move doesn’t materialise, he’ll get stuck in at Celtic for next season.  So it’s not time to reminisce on favourite VVD moments yet, like the time that wee boy bounced off him at Hampden.

Trophy Day at Celtic Park is coming up on Sunday, 24 May when we play Inverness, when the Foundation will be distributing badges before the game to raise funds for the enormous work they do for the local homeless, the world’s poor, those with autism, those with Downs, and many more people and families who need your care.

You can participate in our annual Trophy Day by volunteering to work with the Foundation before kick-off.  It is genuinely good fun and you get to step into the 127-year-old shoes those who have gone before you.

There are around 100 volunteers and we’re only looking for around 20 more, so get in soon by emailing cfcfoundation@celticfc.co.uk or calling 0141 551 4291.

Gearoid, Fabregas is a wee s***e.

His behaviour when we played Arsenal in the qualifier could have been better. Great player but a wee keich.

Livibhoy, maybe Mrs Scholes was fed up with Paul being in the house as he would have been away from the house so often during his playing career.

  4. First final for Barca since they cuffed Manure at Wemburlee back in 2011.

    Livibhoy,

Interviews after games are a big pile of pants. Stock questions with clichéd answers.

Nothing like offering opinions on games.

Not attending the occasional supporters function is entirely different though.

  8. They’re a hard team to like, Bayern, for anyone reading British (English) press, which is a little unfair.

Anyone, who can look a bit further than the fact they are German (Doh!) can easily see they have been really consistent in the champions league the past few years, and undoubtedly are due more credit than they have received.

I talk to their fans a lot. Pretty decent bunch.

  9. LOL @ Tom McL – great bet but I reckoned you were sweating it when Neymar had that sitter/bad pass at the death.

    Nice result tho.

I have always liked Bayern. I lived in Southern Germany for about 6 months in the mid 90s and got to know a few of their supporters. Always like to see them do well.

Agreed. Which makes your comment about them ‘never likely to dine at the top table’ quite baffling.

I used to have a season ticket in 411 and there were 2 young lads who had the seats beside me,they were characters, always drunk and imbibing the aul wacky backy, always late for games. One lad was a rastafarian and one day he was later than usual for the game.I asked his pal where he was and was told he was at his grandads funeral but would be here before half time.He duly arrived and he was wearing a suit and one of those little jewish yarmulke caps on top of his dreadlocks.I asked him about it and he told that his grandad was an orthodox jew.

Fabregas is a wee sh##e but I was commenting on the penchant for the wearing of masks. Know a few huns that would benefit from the full face version.

    Keep the faith

  19. Sorriy Geordie.

I only meant they will never spend Chelsea type money or some mad transfer fee.

PSG Chelsea Man City type teams are not what Bayern aspire too.

There’s a different approach. Not that they are short of a bob or 2.

We all have our views but I like to hear from the players. Just a personal thing. Most are as boring as dish water. You must let the fans hear your views. Agree 100% on supporters functions. Having organised such events in the past it is hugely frustrating when a player lets you down. You sell tickets on the strength of one coming and sometimes a particular player. I think the ex players association wee Joe Miller is involved in could be brought into the fold with the club to ensure you get at least a couple of former legends and a current player if possible. The late great Tommy Burns took Simon Donnelly from the Scotland Under 21 team hotel to out poty dance in Bathgate years ago to collect the award and took him back after Tommy gave us a song of course. I was in tears that night. Tommy should have a statue simply entitled Mr Celtic at Paradise. What a great man.

There is a wonderful interview with Derek Ferguson talking about his first derby match at Ibrox. His dad picked him up after the game and he expected the usual analysis but was asked how he felt he played. He said your no going to believe this but one of the old heads talked me through it. His dad asked what he had said. Just keep it simple son. Keep the head. Your doing fine. Don’t do anything silly. Etc.

His dad clearly delighted his son was being looked after during such a high profile and potentially volatile match where one mistake can be punished and reputations left in tatters asked him who the player was. Derek said your no going to believe this dad it was Tommy Burns. That is one of my favourites about Tommy. An incredible gentleman of football. His interview after winning the centenary double telling the wee Bhoy in hospital he will be up to visit him on Monday was incredible and always overlooked when he says the famous line to Jim Whyte that the fans are there and they are always there Jim. There are not enough words to sum up Tommy Burns. He will never be forgotten. Away to have a greet noo.
