They’d all like to play for Real Madrid

754

Virgil van Dijk is a class defender, one of the best we’ve seen in recent decades, but there’s no revelation in the fact that he would consider moving to the right club at a more testing league; they all would.  The only pertinent fact about Virgil is that several clubs may put that to the test later this year.

The main thing to consider with Virgil is that he’s not likely to ‘Do a Kelvin’, and report as not in the right frame of mind to play, midway through Champions League qualifiers.  With Jason Denayer wanted back in Manchester, it’s important Celtic retain Virgil for the qualifiers, or are sufficiently compensated before then that they can confidently secure the early signatures of prime targets.

From what I hear, Virgil’s been more than professional in his dealings with the club.  He’s not running campaigns to leave and despite the plainly obvious that they would all like to play for Real Madrid, if the right move doesn’t materialise, he’ll get stuck in at Celtic for next season.  So it’s not time to reminisce on favourite VVD moments yet, like the time that wee boy bounced off him at Hampden.

Trophy Day at Celtic Park is coming up on Sunday, 24 May when we play Inverness, when the Foundation will be distributing badges before the game to raise funds for the enormous work they do for the local homeless, the world’s poor, those with autism, those with Downs, and many more people and families who need your care.

You can participate in our annual Trophy Day by volunteering to work with the Foundation before kick-off.  It is genuinely good fun and you get to step into the 127-year-old shoes those who have gone before you.

There are around 100 volunteers and we’re only looking for around 20 more, so get in soon by emailing cfcfoundation@celticfc.co.uk or calling 0141 551 4291.

“Mike Ashley goes to WAR with the Rangers board and demands: Give me my £5m loan back NOW

06:00, 13 May 2015 By Keith Jackson , Mark McGivern

NEWCASTLE owner also requests ANOTHER general meeting and asks for a full explanation into stock market delisting as he issues Ibrox chiefs with an ultimatum.

MIKE ASHLEY has turned his guns on the new Rangers regime by requisitioning a general meeting and asking for his £5m loan to be repaid in full.

Record Sport can reveal the Sports Direct tycoon made the highly aggressive move one week AFTER the Ibrox club’s interim chairman Paul Murray and director John Gilligan travelled south to open ‘peace talks’ at his Shirebrook HQ in Derbyshire – but five days BEFORE cops raided the premises as part of a probe into the commercial activities of former owners Craig Whyte and Charles Green.

In the letter, which is dated April 29, Ashley demands to know the ‘precise details’ surrounding the recent delisting of the club from the AIM Stock Exchange, a move which was triggered when Dave King teamed up with other high profile shareholders to successfully remove Derek Llambias and Derek Leach from the boardroom.

He also proposes resolutions which if voted through, would force the new regime to hand back a £5 million crisis loan which was agreed between Ashley, Llambias and Leach in January.

In exchange for the cash Ashley will hand back security over all the Rangers crests and badges, the club’s Murray Park training ground and Albion Street car park and the Edmiston House facility.

Record Sport can also reveal that Ashley had a negative security clause written into the deal struck with the previous board, which means Rangers cannot use security of Ibrox stadium in order to raise funds with any third parties.

The letter was sent two weeks ago, but Ashley has been complaining that he is still awaiting a response.

A source close to Ashley said last night: “This is a message to Dave King and his associates to put up or shut up. The board and the fans own more than half of the Rangers shares, so they have the power to vote this through – if they have the money.

“All they have to do is find the £5 million that he gave them in January and he will release security on the various brands, Murray Park, the car park and Edmiston House.

“It’s a very simple situation. If they really want to change the relationship with Sport Direct they will vote for a change.

“If they, in fact, are happy for Sports Direct to have security over the club’s assets they will vote down what Mike Ashley is proposing.”

It’s understood the club has 28 days period in which to respond to the request for a general meeting.

Last night a Rangers spokesman said: “The board have received the request and are considering it with our advisers.”

Ashley’s attempt to force a general meeting is the latest twist in wrangling between Rangers and the controversial Newcastle United owner, who holds a 8.92 per cent stake in the Ibrox club.

The first meeting between the new regime and Ashley’s camp took place on April 22. The talks saw Murray and Gilligan travel to Sports Direct’s base seeking a renegotiation of the terms of the club’s commercial contracts. Those initial discussions were described as ‘amicable’ even though Murray and Gilligan left without reaching an agreement on a fairer deal.

And the situation took another dramatic twist on May 4 when the Record revealed Ashley’s retail factory had been raided by Scottish cops, looking for paperwork relating to their investigations into Whyte and Green.

The Record has now obtained the letter Ashley sent days before the raid, in which he seeks to disengage from his involvement in Rangers – bar keeping a finger in the merchandise pie.

Ashley tightened his grip on the club’s retail division after agreeing his latest loan deal with the previous board in a deal which saw him up his stake to a whopping 75 per cent. If the cash is repaid Sports Direct’s share of the business will drop back down to 49 per cent.

Ashley also demands answers on how the club’s Nominated Adviser was no longer willing to be appointed and what steps were taken to find an alternative Nomad.

And he wants full details of the most recent emergency bail-out – a £1.5m loan from the Three Bears consortium of Douglas Park, George Letham and George Taylor.

He states that the club should take no more than 10 days of the passing of his £5 million pay-off resolution to put the cash into his bank account.

Douglas Park, George Taylor and George LethamDouglas Park, George Taylor and George Letham

Ashley is entitled to call for the meeting of shareholders because he owns more than five per cent of the club.

Last year MASH lent Rangers £3 million, which was subsequently paid off by a £5 million loan put up by Sports Direct – tying up the security of the club’s assets with the firm.

The deal that set up the current trauma involved a £10 million provision by Ashley in January, of which only half was drawn down on for working capital and repayment of the previous £3 million loan.

In return, Sports Direct grabbed control of another 26% of Rangers’ retail operation and will benefit from shirt sponsorship income. Security was provided in the form of virtually all of the club’s assets apart from Ibrox Stadium itself.”

Servants, domestic animals, wild animals, political animals and even the odd troll are most welcome!

  18. Looks like Mike Ashley doesn’t want the new Rangers regime spending all the ST monies to keep them afloat over the summer while they owe MASH the £5M.

It places Paul Murray in an awkward situation. Here is an opportunity for the new Rangers Board to get security over their property back and also their IP, and get a large monkey of their back.

If they don’t pay the £5M where does it leave them?

If the new Rangers are plunged into another crisis with Paul Murray in charge (as a consequence of a letter sent the day before the SFA pronounced1 Corinthians 13:11 PM a F&PP) where does this leave the promises PM undertook in response to the SFA’s enquiries into his F&P status.

The new Rangers Board and the SFA could be in an indefensible situation once again.

  19. Signed it, and posted it on my Facebook, my piss up in the Brazen got 1,300 hits two weeks ago, after winning the league, so if I get 10% of that then that’s good.

    Good man Tony.

  21. So big Mike has asked for his £5m loan back. Sevco clearly don’t have it.

Would big Mike simply call in his security over Murray Park and Rangers retail?

Would they be enough to satisfy his loan given that the whole Rangers shooting match was sold for £5.5m not 3 years ago?

If he takes ownership of them and claims he is still owed money would that force Sevco into administration?

If they have no retail income, have to pay rent to train at their training ground, face a huge repair bill for Ibrox and already run at a loss, how are they going to function?

And how annoyed are Livingston going to be given the battering they’ve taken from the SFA over their finances (they paid a £750k bond to the SFA to let them start the season!).

Happy with the news Big Michael is wanting his loan back but could someone answer a question for me?

BBC’s Chris McLaughlin is of the opinion that, along with branding and security over Murray Park, if RIFC pay back the 5 million, they also get the retail rights back.

Excuse my ignorance but I thought that the retail agreement was a completely separate thing?

Well that would be the ideal scenario for all those concerned.

Install Dave King into a position, where he can put his money where his mouth is.

However it has long been my contention that if Dave King had shown proof to the SFA that he was willing and able to put the promised money into new Rangers he would have passed the F&P criteria then and there.
