THREE CHEERS AT TANNADICE

1

CELTIC fans saw treble at Tannadice last night as Ange Postecoglou proudly led his players to a dramatic Premiership title triumph.

The Hoops got the point they required in the 1-1 draw with Dundee United to make absolutely certain the silverware was coming back to Paradise for the tenth time in 11 seasons after a one-year absence.

Remarkably, it’s the THIRD time the Hoops have enjoyed crowning glory on Tayside as they have conquered all before them in the race to be the nation’s No.1 team.

Billy McNeill’s side got the ball rolling in the 1980/81 campaign when they made certain of the flag with a thrilling 3-2 victory against United on their patch when Murdo MacLeod, Frank McGarvey and Tommy Burns fired in the goals.

FLAG-HAPPY…Reo Hatate enjoys his first Celtic title medal as the players celebrate at Tannadice.

Then, in season 2007/08, with Gordon Strachan in charge, it was Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink who settled the issue in the last league encounter of a nerve-shredding term when the giant Dutchman powered in a left-wing corner-kick from Paul Hartley for the game’s only goal in the 72nd minute.

Last night, it was the turn of Greek hitman Giorgos Giakoumakis to take centre stage with another thumping header, this time from a right-wing cross from Anthony Ralston. United levelled with a sublime effort from young Welshman Dylan Levitt, but the green and white ribbons have been on the trophy since the 4-1 rout of Hearts at Parkhead four days earlier.

However, it was good, old Tannadice that again hosted the title party as Postecoglou and Co stretched their unbeaten league sequence to an extraordinary THIRTY-ONE games.

Quite a transformation when the team lost three out of their first six Premiership outings.

Let’s have three cheers for the Tayside stadium…Hoop Hoop Hooray…Hoop Hoop Hooray…Hoop Hoop Hooray!

APRIL 22 1981…Billy McNeill and his assistant John Clark are lifted shoulder high by the delighted Celtic players after the 3-2 win at Tannadice.

MAY 22 2008…the Celtic players, with Aiden McGeady sporting some natty headgear, enjoy their title triumph at the home of Dundee United.

MAY 11 2022…Celtic players, with Ange Postecoglou in the background, enjoy their crowning glory after the 1-1 draw at Tannadice.
