Time for Celtic to box clever

806

Salzburg got back to winning ways on Sunday after losing 4-1 away to third-placed Rheindorf Altach immediately before the international break.  The stats from that game are interesting.  Salzburg enjoyed 60% possession but Rheindorf forced 66% more chances by playing on the break, scoring twice in the closing 10 minutes as Salzburg pushed for an equaliser.

A point on Thursday would be an acceptable result for Salzburg so they could be caught between trying to defend and playing their normal game.  Either way it’s likely they will hold possession for long periods.

No team is completely dependent on one player but this truism is probably tested more by Salzburg and their talismanic striker, Jonathan Soriano, who has scored 26 times in 27 outings this season.  Consider for a moment if we had such a prodigious striker………..

Salzburg coach Adolf Hutter must decide how far tp change his usual game plan.  Salzburg’s entire strategy is to attack.  They have scored 50 league goals already this season, twice as many as any other team, while their goals against record is within a handful of the majority of teams in the league.

My preference would be to tempt them out, have them fall between the two stools of playing their natural offensive game and the more cautious approach they may be tempted to play away in Europe.  One note of caution, the Ajax team who beat Celtic comfortably in Amsterdam last season were shredded 0-3 by a counter-attacking Salzburg in the same venue a few months later.

Ajax failed to box clever, we can be smarter.  Stop Soriano, closed-down space at the back and play on the counter.

  2. I could well be committing celtic heresy here but I don’t miss the CL one bit. The sky sports uberhype and playing against a desperate minor force somewhere from the continent have left me numb for years. Thursday feels far more like battle to me, one team against another, football rather than moolah will win us the match and we’ve got CP.

  3. With the amount of formations, and different teams being put forward on here,if RD does not get a result on Thursday,he is going to cop it big time from around 70% of posters.

  7. I would not be overly confident that Zagreb can get all three points in Romania neither Salzburg or Celtic have found it easy there. I think Salzburg only won by a goal so I expect Astra to make things difficult for Zagreb in this Eastern European derby match.

Salzburg from what I saw of them against Celtic are suspect in defence and we had chances to win the game in Austria, granted they do have dangerous forwards and our defenders will have to keep high levels of concentration. Hopefully Denayer and Lustig are fit, Mikel is a top man when it comes to these European games. Great to have James Forrest back and he could well be our secret weapon against Salzburg. Agree with Paul, play it tight and hit them on the break.

  8. Turkeybhoy,

I think Ronny has only used 15 or 16 players in the entire group stage campaign, in pretty much the same formation.

Imo he’ll go with exactly the same line up as either of the last 2 euro games with wee Jamesy in for Callum mac and the enforced change at rb.

Eight English Premier League clubs are monitoring Rangers’ starlet Lewis Macleod with the idea of trying to lure the talented youngster away from Ibrox, according to reports.

The 20-year old has been in sparkling form this campaign, scoring eight times in 19 appearances, and his play has drawn interest from Everton and Burnley amongst other, who are looking to sign the player during the January transfer window

With James McArthur and Steven Naismith in his squad it’s apparent Everton boss Roberto Martinez values Scottish talent, while Sean Dyche’s struggling Burley side are desperately looking for attacking inspiration as they aim to avoid an immediate return to the English Championship. Crystal Palace are also looking to increase their burgeoning Scottish contingent.

Ally McCoist has already spoken about his desire to hold onto Macleod – who is contracted until 2017 – though he conceded any final decision would be out of his hands as Rangers’ financial woes rumble on in the background.

“Lewis is playing every week, enjoying his football and he is clearly developing and it goes without saying we want that to continue,” McCoist told the media earlier this month.

“I will be dictated to by the board and people who make decisions but certainly from a footballing point he is doing absolutely smashing and he is a key member of our squad and now the national squad.

“Time will tell if he can command a larger transfer fee than Alan Hutton. In the darker days of the last couple of years when the fans have been looking for something to grab hold of, Lewis Macleod is a shining star that we have all grabbed hold of.”

McCoist’s decision to replace Macleod with Kris Boyd 10 minutes from the end of Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Hearts drew the ire of the away support.

Macleod made his Rangers debut in a 4-0 League Cup win over East Fife in August 2012 and has never looked back.

With the exception of missing the final four months of last season through illness, he’s been an almost permanent fixture of the Rangers first team squad since that first appearance, and was recently rewarded for his stellar play with a call-up to the Scotland squad for the Republic of Ireland and England double-header.

For all parties, another such move which could work would be for Arsenal to send Yaya Sanogo out on loan.

The French youth international is a player in who Arsene Wenger has great faith. Fans may argue too much, having started him ahead of Olivier Giroud in the Champions League against Bayern Munich last season; and his confidence has taken a dip with him still to score a competitive goal for the Gunners.

He is however clearly a talent. He scored four goals in one pre-season game against Benfica in pre-season, and netted twice for France’s under-21s to help them beat England 3-2 last week.

SFA chief Stewart Regan admits to ‘slight concerns’ over Rangers financial position and that they are seeking clarity over Mike Ashley’s influence on the club

Governing body have their say on the financial plight of the Ibrox side and look for answers to some pressing questions

Scottish FA chief executive Stewart Regan has admitted he is worried about Rangers’ financial position.

Regan also revealed that the SFA are seeking to hold talks with Mike Ashley over his growing influence on the Ibrox club.

In an interview on the STV website Regan described how the financial situation is “concerning for the Scottish Football Association” and that he has been in contact with Ashley’s lawyers to seek clarity over ‘some slight concerns we have got’.

The Ibrox club have recently taken £3m in secured loans from Mike Ashley for short-term working capital and admitted they may not have enough cash to meet costs between now and the end of the year.

“Well obviously it is concerning for the Scottish Football Association,” Regan said.

“We would all like to see Rangers back to their winning ways as quickly as possible and to improve their financial position in order to bring more money to the game of football in Scotland.

“Rangers have got a strong economic impact, not just for Glasgow but for Scotland generally and the Scottish Football Association in particular.

“In that regard I know the fans and the association are desperate to see success again. We are desperate for stability.

“We’ve had a number of years of ups and downs now and I think we are hopeful they we will get some certainty and stability for the future.”

Rangers made clear their dire financial situation in a recent statement to the Stock Exchange earlier this month which read:

“During the autumn, the club has suffered from lower than expected match attendance which has exacerbated the financial condition of the business.

“The directors have begun a cost cutting exercise, but further working capital in addition to the facility will be needed before the end of the year.”

Regan also explained how the SFA have written to the Newcastle United owner recently seeking clarity over the extent of his involvement at Ibrox.

Ashley, has provided secured loans to the value of £3m within the last month to meet working capital needs and has increased his shareholding to nine per cent in the club.

“We’ve been in regular dialogue with Mike’s lawyers through MASH Holdings. It’s still ongoing at the moment, we are still chatting about things.

“The next stage is to meet with Mike and his advisers and obviously get some clarification around some of the concerns we all have.

“We have a situation in our articles which prevents dual interests in football clubs. We gave Mike Ashley the ability to have up to 10 per cent shareholding in the club.

“As part of that, there was an understanding that there would be no management or influence at Rangers Football Club.

“Clearly we want to have a better understanding of his position in that regard.”

“If Mike wants to manage Rangers he needs to have his coaching badges and preferably from Largs, that is what we have told his lawyers” Regan said.
