Time on the bench gave Hooper space

1040

This season, Gary Hooper has looked well below form of last term; his touch, movement and goals record don’t match up, but he came off the bench on Thursday to score a truly excellent goal.  Controlling a difficult ball in the centre circle, with defenders in close attendance, he picked out Giorgios Samaras before sprinting past his markers and finishing.

The winner against Motherwell was less spectacular but required sharp movement and spatial awareness.

Footballers cannot always play through bad form, sometimes they need a break, even for an hour on the bench, to get a different perspective on how they and the team play.

Despite his return to form I would retain the same 4-2-3-1 formation against Inverness next time out.

Issue 4 of CQN Magazine is out next week, let me know if you would like to advertise, celticquicknews@gmail.com.

    2010 Never Again

Would everyone agree to a referendum of Celtic season ticket holders deciding what path we should take if the huns decide to enter administration?

A simple yes…no…..vote on supporting their phoenix back in to the SPL or not

    ———————————————————————————————————

I don’t think we need to hold any sort of poll to answer that question. No Tim in a state of sense or sobriety would support their reinstatement.

The question is what do we as a support do about it if, and it’s a big if, Celtic FC support it.

  2. tomtheleedstim – It does no harm at all. In fact it should be reiterated to them the consequences. Far from causing harm it is a good thing!

The last 30mins however should be a stark warning to the board. A quick look on Twitter and various other sites shows just how readily everyone jumped on the “Board will save Rangers” bandwagon. A tiny percentage only stopped and thought “Wait a minute”.

The board have some serious PR to do among the support as their actions have led to a perception among the fans they will readily act in opposition to the best interests of the club.

    Worrying position to be in.

  3. Imatim,

do you really think that would mean anything at all?

Are there any Celtic supporters out there who would for a nano-second countenance the “pheonix” rising in the SPL?

If so, they need their haw maws rattled with a pair of steelies!

I am with RL and JF when thinking that even our Board are not stupid enough to give any sort of approval (tacit or otherwise) to the re-born huns being allowed straight back into the SPL.

They know (surely???) that would have the Car Park at Kerrydale St bursting at the seams.

Unfortunaley I’d say there is a higher than 2% chance. Remember the Boston Tea Party that our board tried to organise with their South side chums?!

I can add my list to the name of people not renewing their season tickets if it were to be true.

If my club is involved in saving a sectarian institution and believes that their existence is dependant on a sectarian organisation then I want no further part. It would break my heart but the club would be dead in my eyes and I would simply have to take up another hobby.

This action would be so far removed from the principles of Brother Walfrid that I think the spirit of the club would be gone forever.

  5. Rogueleader – I’m with you on this. The board have had far too much warning of the outcome of such a move to take the risk. Even if only half of those that have suggested they’ll can it actually do so the club would still be hit harder financially than by going 3 years without Rangers.

Let’s get all Machiavellian for a moment. Let’s say there’s been some secret phone calls. The result of which is that Celtic can vote against but the move get carried by the rest. Our hands are tied we come off clean. The 10 points is deducted, their team is trimmed dramatically in January and we win the league. Do you think that the same number will give up, on the basis that they’ve seen through what happened? I don’t.

  6. Re: Phil Mac’s latest offering:

    What a nightmare scenario.

I don’t suppose there is any way this could be a Machiavellian manoeuvre by Celtic to try to keep CW at the Ibrokes helm … ?

    Nah. Didn’t think so.

    There’s no place like home.

  7. Big well done to the under 19,s last night, anybody think Stevie Friel could do a job alongside our first team coaches for the remaining games this season

  8. the long wait is over on

I hope Phil’s article is nothing more than either he or , more worryingly , the board flying a kite to gauge fans’ reaction.

    Here’s mine –

Whatever part of Celtic is dependent on Rangers I would be prepared to let go, to paraphrase Paul.

    Totally unacceptable to assist them.

Does anyone think they would do the same for us? Not a chance.

  9. James Forrest is Lennon on

    Moonbeams:

Aaaaw I went down in your opinion today?

    WELL BOO-FECKING-HOO.

The day I am not allowed to state an opinion on this blog without crap like that is the day I’m off.

No, I don’t recall ever blaming league positions on referees. I don’t believe, that over the course of a 38 game season, that they can decide the destination of league titles. If they did, Rangers would have won 10 in a row and I question that we would ever have been allowed to win 9.

We have conspired, in years past, to shoot ourselves in the foot on the park. Last season’s title was in our hands. It was, in fact, in the hands of Georgios Samaras, at Ibrox, with minutes to go. Had he scored, we would have won the league. No-one would have taken it away from us, and I firmly believe that.

I am big enough and ugly enough to know Rangers’ form last year was exceptional. I hate to admit it, but it was. Their form this year has also been exceptional, at least in terms of the league, and we only have ourselves to blame for the appalling position we are in.

If that doesn’t fit with the CQN Orthodoxy, if it makes you “think less of me” then I’ll have to live with that pain, that torment, that agony, that heartache.

  10. I would suggest to Phil that maybe he might check some of his facts.

Now maybe some ‘shady deal’ is being done but he is massively wrong when he writes

Instead the Scottish Football authorities are about to rubber stamp the prolificacy of the tax free Tore Andre Flo period.

No one could keep up with a club that could splash £12 million on a single player

Celtic not only kept up with them, we took the benchmark and made it into a submerged plumbline.

During Flo’s tour of duty, Celtic won both titles.

It sort of detracts from the rest of his research!

  11. Paul

Good to see an article in support of Hooper. He’s taken a lot of stick this year, but I still have a high regard for him and his potential.

Much like Kayal, he seems to be rushed back too soon after injuries and this isn’t doing him any favours. Indeed when you consider the ‘strength’ we’re supposed to have in our squad I feel too many players are risked – Brown certainly suffered from a high risk decision to play at Ibrox. Circumstances have forced us to look elsewhere and as it turns out Stokes can do a job without Hooper and Wanyama can fill in for missing first picks, so there is strength in the squad after all…

  12. tomtheleedstim on

Am I right in thinking that “they” cannot be granted a UEFA licence for something like three years as a new entity regardless of what happens with the SFA/SPL?

Sure I read something on here or KDS about that.

  13. weeminger – you are right. Our board voting Yes to them finishes them. They are done. All of them, to a man. People suggesting they do not realise this is just not based in reality at all. Of course they know this.

Turkeys do not vote for Christmas.

As you point out, and as I said earlier, our vote is of no consequence unless somebody votes No aswell.

There would be no benefit at all. None whatsoever for us to vote yes.

We vote No, somebody joins us in that, they are done in. Win for Celtic.

We vote No, are the only dissenters, and it is passed we stood up against them. Fans (customers) happy. Glorious, self sustaining defeat allowing PL or IB a platform for a rousing speech on the self interests of the wee teams and the cheating of Der Hun.

    We vote Yes. Armageddon.

    Why would they vote yes?

    Use some common sense people.

I should have been clearer. I was meaning to force this on the Board should it be necessary. I also stayed away from adding shareholders to the equation even though I am one….for obvious reasons.

  15. FourGreenFields on

Just received my latest email from my MSP regarding new bill and missing data on sectarian attacks , he is trying to arrange a meeting with Fans Against Criminalisation and is sending me and others an email regarding the missing data .

  16. I previously enquired in any of the board ‘happy clappers’ are willing to stick their heids above the parapet now! Go on try and support your arguments now -” they are doing what is best for the club in the long run”. Please explain why we have had to watch the quality of our team decline so dramatically in a few seasons (Chris Sutton to Kris Killen?) The cheap option managers anon, go on justify their actions if this is true

I fervently pray that Phil has got this one wrong

  17. There is a very good book waiting to be written, by any ole clever clogs with the time and motivation to do so.

The title, with due deference to messrs Kuper and Syzmanski, is ‘Why Celtic lose, and other curious Phenomena Explained’.

    It’s a guaranteed best-seller.

Do you ever feel like a bit of a tube after your posts directed at me? I’ve got a few views that are different, and I’m generally happy to defend them. I’ve taken some abuse from lesser CQNers and I’ve been challenged by the greater CQNers, but no-body has done so with as little wit or originality as you have – for example, you do realise you’re basically using Aw Naw’s preferred mode of attack?

Best I can tell you believe in conspiracy, visit FF and spend a lot of time online… being obnoxious… I’m just saying, that’s how it seems.

  19. If Phil is right, I am finished! 25yrs season ticket holder. Will defo get in touch wit Celtic tonite via e mail advising Celtic of this. I urge u all to do the same.

Councillors in Glasgow when voting for school closures had a wee understanding.

They were allowed to vote against any closure in their own constituency as long as they voted in favour for the rest of the closures. “My hands are clean,” s/he would say to their voters.

Totally agree, we need to win all our games between now and the New Year no matter what. 4-2-3-1 for me especially if we can get Commons back to his best and Forrest maintains his form.

I am looking for help to find a web link to the history of Celtic scarfs ( I have tried scarves or scarfs searches without much success ). I have a Italian football friend, who supports Lazio ( I have taken him to Celtic Park) and he helps and runs a Lazio web / radio and is a fan of all football in general.

Here is his question ” ”

“Next Saturday we will do a meeting about old scarves in our Pub. Can you

find an article about scarves that I can translate and put on our site” ?

I think anything along the lines of the very first Celtic scarfs, material, knitted, wool, silk etc…then when we first had joint team scarves in Europe, May be even Ghirls designed introduction of scarfs

    appreciate any help. Thanks.

  28. James Forrest is Lennon on

As to the “phoning round other clubs” scenario ….

I don’t believe we’ve done that either. Too risky on the part of the board. What happens if, say, you call St Johnstone, to guage their reaction, and they tell you in no uncertain terms they are burying Craig Whyte’s manky deal?

    What then?

The real question is, what our club does if the vote goes against us. Let’s not get carried away lynching our board for something they’ve not done yet – yes, today, on a day when I am accused of being angry and emotional just because I don’t support the Great Refereeing Conspiracy Theory, I am backing the board – we ought to be considering how best to react, how we want Celtic to react, if the vote goes that way regardless of our opposition.

    For the record:

I believe you will be able to guage our board’s view on the matter in a simple way. If Rangers win we did not do everything we could to prevent it, because I believe – no, I know – that if we are wholly opposed any grubby deal is dead.

I am fairly sure our lawyers are better than theirs. And those of the SFA too. I also know the commercial benefits of keeping Rangers in the league could be easily offset by our club withdrawing co-operation in any number of areas, including the two cup competitions.

We should be finding ways of making it clear that if our board’s opposition is total we will support them in every way.

  29. Phil had an article recently which didn’t quite pan out as reported. I’ll wait and see on this one too. In the meantime, let’s keep supporting Celtic and let the huns situation take care of itself.
