Time to revise some plans

474

Having watched previous generations of Celtic teams park the bus at Barcelona I’m not one to criticise Hamilton Accies when they do the same at Celtic Park. They put on an effective defensive performance but although the game got nervy as Celtic defended a one goal lead in the final minutes, Accies were never able to pass the ball well enough to make a genuine attempt at goal.

The only goal of the game came from a deep run by Moussa Dembele, who had dropped behind Tom Rogic, before sprinting forward to collect a pass from the Aussie. The Accies back line were concentrating on catching Leigh Griffiths offside but didn’t have the response necessary to match Dembele’s run.

It was great play from Rogic, Dembele and Griffiths, who remained in control to finish. That aside, the incredibly high standard of passing Celtic have achieved in recent weeks wasn’t matched. That’s football, it’s impossible for players, or anyone else for that matter, to perform with machine-like consistency, even John Lennon wrote the lyric, “I am a walrus”.

As well as experiencing varying levels of performance, we are now far enough into the season for teams to face Celtic with some revised plans. We play three at the back in possession, so Premiership teams push three men up when Craig Gordon has the ball, forcing the keeper to kick to the halfway line, where possession is often lost. This happened against Aberdeen, Motherwell and Accies in recent weeks.

Brendan Rodgers is miles ahead of his competition, but elements of games between now and the break will be more like chess matches than football. Not least our visit to Hamilton’s artificial surface on Christmas Eve. In the whole of 2016 only Motherwell beat Accies in consecutive games, and indication of an astonishing level of resilience by a club without the resources normally associated with senior football. Coo coo ca choo.

  1. Tonydonnelly67. Lisa Hague (Kris Common’s wife) campaigns tirelessly for SIMBA which is a charity dedicated to supporting families that have suffered the tragedy of a still born child. What exactly do you believe her “agenda,” to be that could be in any way be an issue to Celtic.

P.S Kris Commons did not come on against Rangers in the cup semi final. Try allowing him the courtesy of spelling his name correctly, even if you don’t have the facts to back up your position..

  2. I thought House of Cards was excellent and then Trump came along…. He has created an absurdity out of reality that no screenwriter could ever hope to match.

  3. Point taken lads, he never got off the bench, my appols.but he was the architect of disruptive behaviour in the camp, it it ran through the team like sheet through a goose, his wife? An attention seeker, IMO.

  4. Tontdonnelly67. I posted my follow up before I saw your response, Do you think she is wrong to seek attention for the SIMBA cause?

Ffs, I’m the only guy to make a spelling mistake on a Celtic players name? Get a a life ffs.

Tontdonnelly67. I posted my follow up before I saw your response, Do you think she is wrong to seek attention for the SIMBA cause?

What she does in charity as I said we all know, my opinion is she’s an attention seeker, your of a different mind, fine by me,.

  7. TONYDONNELLY67:

You are the only one who said he was playing shite when he wasn’t even on the field….

You then apologise and in mitigation you decide to put thhe boot into his charity inspired wife…. again.

And you want to be taken seriously.

  8. Not all players become better when they don’t play then?

Kris Commons put in the worst performance of his career from the sidelines in the semi final.

He was probably distracted by his attention seeking wife,

  9. Bada Bing – Not sure if it was, but if your point was addressed to me, I hear you. Normally I would let his nonsense go, but on this occasion he just got under my skin. I’m a huge admirer of the work Lisa Hague does, and to call it attention seeking or peddling an agenda is ignorant in the extreme.

Thanks for reminding me of the dangers of porcine wrestling though. :)

  10. I might be stupid but I thought a prerequisite of raising funds for charity was to attract attention.

Tony there are some days you ought to just pull the neck in a wee bit and extend credence to those who don’t talk but rather do.

  11. Hi Paul67,

Didn’t see yesterday’s game – kept abreast by the CQN updates… thx lhads – but thought the goal was interesting.

We had Dembele playing deep and Griff in “the upfront” position.

When the ball was played forward, we didn’t see an archetypal Griff run… i.e. getting himself in space and looking to receive the ball.

Instead Griff ran out left keeping himself onside but also stretching the defence giving Moussa space…

This is the sort of move we often see from Dembele and Sinclair.

We are seeing players develop and Brendan asking them to do different things.

This learning curve may mean we are a bit more disjointed and less fluid than we would like to see but for me very necessary… it is important we have a squad capable of implementing BR’s tactics flexibly, accurately and aggressively by next Seasons UCL qualifiers.

BTW… Prefer a day in the life mesel:)

    Hail Hail

  12. I learned long ago, never to wrestle with a pig. You get dirty, and besides, the pig likes it.

    For Bada :-)

Oh I do my bit, but not that it’s any of yours or anyone else’s business, I don’t need the attention, I’ll leave that to Commons and ez misses.

  14. Are we now officially back tracking from the great water rip off, and the great roof collapse, scenarios.

When does the OBAF take back stage to fake reporting?

You are entitled to your opinion, extend me the courtesy or mine own.

And I’m a tool? Will the real KITALBA stand up.

  16. Went into the Kerrydale for a coke after the game to let the traffic clear. Came out and the players were coming out. All of them walked at snails pace or stopped so they could take the time to let fans get the selfies, sign autographs and so on, not a single person left disappointed, including my wee yin who got photos with Broony, Liam Henderson and big Moussa.

I remember years ago folk keeping pace with players as they tried to get one of the autographs before the car park gates. Great ti see such a change in attitude, it means a lot to the kids.

Then we spotted wee Bertie and my 72 year old da went into selfie mode! Except he doesn’t have a smart phone or really know what a selfie is. He just knew we’d sort it. He walked over, said hello, Bertie gave him the warmest of handshakes and a huge smile and the two of them were posing like haddies before I could get the phone back out my pocket.

Anyway, over comes Bertie’s grandson and takes my phone, makes sure me and my daughter and my brother all get in the photo, turns us around to get the stadium as the backdrop. By this time Bertie’s got the specs off in anticipation and lo and behold a photo to treasure, 3 generations of us with Bertie, my dad’s idol.

    In the heat of Lisbon…….

    QUONNO:

re-reading your post again…. do you think players are just meat???

    Certainly not.

    As always I am consistent.

In the past I have posted here that if clubs regard things in a purely business fashion, the cannot complain when employees do the same.

Equally, players who quite rightly try to get the best deal for themselves, have no complaints when they are treated as employees.

  18. CHAIRBHOY

One of the things you get when implementing new systems to players is confusion.

The system last night was disjointed and often the decisive pass went wrong side of player.

A lot of our runs in last third were into crowded areas and our movement was late or nonexistent.

The back three did not look comfortable at times though in the first half Jozo looked like Cafu.

Not convinced that Dembele and Griff can form a partnership but time will tell.

Celtic V Rangers Hogmanay Game Switched to Celtic Park due to Leaking Roof

THE two Glasgow giants will now meet at Celtic Park due to a hole in the roof at Ibrox at the Celtic end.

THE switch was deemed necessary by SPFL chiefs after an inspection by the Ibrox building management team brought it to the SPFL´s attention

Billy Findlay Chief inspector stated, “This is only an issue when the away end has been sold out to capacity and while there is inclement weather,

this is not a safety issue but one of public health.”

SPFL Chief Neil Doncaster said “We have been in touch with the Met and they think that there is a very high statistical likelihood that it will be raining, so the logical thing was to talk to Celtic who have been very accommodating”

Celtic Chief Executive stated “We will do all that we can to make sure that this match is not spoiled for any of our supporters or TV viewers, and have agreed that the next three Derby games will take place at Ibrox, temporary toilets and Porta Loos will be set up in the concourse for our fans who will be located in the away fan section for this fixture”

All tickets for the Ibrox game will be valid for the Hogmanay game and supporters should check with their club website for seating information.
