Timely boost as Mackay-Steven signs pre-contract

1749

Delighted we have made the pre-contract signing of Gary Mackay-Steven.  Gary signed for Dundee United from Airdrie in 2011 as a 20-year-old and soon became a popular figure for United fans.  He has been one of several members of Jackie McNamara’s squad who has attracted attention this season and will be a loss to the former Celtic defender.

It’s all about the system

Gary is left-footed but can play on either side of the 3-behind-the-striker Ronny Deila likes to deploy.  He is industrious and has a bag of tricks that makes for a good highlights video on YouTube.

I watched him turn it on against Dundee on New Years’ Day, and fondly recall a virtuoso Scottish Cup performance at Ibrox, but I’m always reluctant to offer a recommendation on a player we’ve only seen against Celtic, or in the odd TV game.  The most encouraging part of this deal is that Celtic will have watched the player literally dozens of times – we want to get our first choice players, and we don’t want to be dependent on the recommendation of a foreign-based acquaintance.

United may consider cashing-in on the player this month, but I’m sure it won’t be for the £80k Sheffield United offered earlier this week.

This will be a timely boost ahead of tomorrow’s important game against Hamilton Accies, who I’ve watched a fair bit of this season.  They are a far better team than we thought they were went they left Celtic Park with a win in October, while their pitch provides a different challenge.

It’s as game I expect us to win but I’ll be happy when the result is in the bag.

Many thanks to everyone who booked tickets for the CQN11 St Patrick’s Night on Friday 13 March at the Kerrydale suite.  You can book at the bottom of this page, or email me if you’d like to hold a ticket, celticquicknews@gmail.com .

The event has been live for less than 24 hours and we are already well on the way to funding the school kitchen in Malawi for Mary’s Meals.

Im a Derry man but i think it was a generational thing

My brothers hero was Paul McStay

    Mines was John Collins

but Peter Grant…in todays terms… was like Neil Lennon

Noticed police Scotland’s pathetic attempts to huckle the guy. A wee grapple then retreat inside….yup Scotland’s polis know their place when it comes to sevco.

How many vans turned up for the “kettling” incident?

  3. Bhoylo/Gerryfraethebrig,

I always liked Peter. Felt he was very harshly treated by an element of the Celtic support esp in the early to mid 90s.

As you say, he gave his all, knowing all the while that he was limited in his ability. never stopped him though.

He lived the reality, the rest of us can only dream of.

    HAIL! HAIL!

  4. I met Peter Grant in a club in Glasgow years ago he said to me..” i know im not the best player ever..but every game i give 100%”….a true Celtic man…love him to bits…really is one of us…..

  5. If true !!!!! a pitch invasion was planned for the 54th minute and didn’t materialise…..then who is to say it wont be carried through come the semi final at hampden……..they crave for publicity good or bad…….Ronny and Johny will have witnessed their behaviour tonite…..put fans and players at risk ……is it worth the hassle for a tuppence hapenny trophy.??????????????…..na me neither……jist hope Doncaster comes out of his slumber

  7. Please don’t tell me your not going to the semi cause your scared of the hun. Celtic wouldn’t be here if we were easily cowed. Everyone who has access to a ticket must go and laugh at them. It’s what they deserve.

I am sure Peter Grant went to St Pats in Coatbridge and was actually head and shoulders above anybody in the Lanarkshire Select, in his early days at Celtic he was actually quite impressive but in a midfield 3 of Collins & McStay obviously he wasn’t in the top 2, I loved him because he did live the dream, I remember back in the day he had just got married to Lorraine and her gran bought them a flat in our scheme, after a couple of weeks his good lady got talking to ma wee burd (Rangers fan) at that time i was going home and away to games but was struggling for tickets at Pittodrie (old beech end) couldn’t believe it that the girlfriend handed me two tickets “I got them off Peter” I was delighted but still annoyed that I didn’t get them and she did……..he might not have been the best but defintely wasn’t the worst, plus scoring at the Broomloan Road is better than a lottery win

  11. Big games coming up in the league.

A Scottish cup game away to Dundee.

A massive European game against Inter

    and a pantomime at Hampden.

    Let’s keep some perspective folks.

Great to see you on here!

My son born 1980 and my daughter born 1983; so I can empathise with where you are at. Saw the Lions win the Big Cup in ’67 on the black and white TV and was also present at the hot day in Seville. It is great to be a Celt!

Peter did play for St Pats Coatbridge. I played against him for my school St Tams. The most annoying guy I ever played against. His will to win at 14/15 was incredible though.

The Maestro was the best I have seen, Peter was ok but couldn’t lace wee Lennys boots, my best 3 midfielders ever would be McStay, Burns & Lennon (for the older punters it’s just 80s onwards)

Not just for ability but for Celticness !!!!!

  16. Southside 23.51……..Police didnae have enough vans to do the kettling thingy……Approach roads to ibrox were treacherous……they had to use the helipad….
