Toast and chips, if you’re lucky

397

So you have money left at the end of the month?  Enough for a holiday, for Christmas?  Chances are if you are a season ticket holder at a UK football club you do.  Even if this is the case, and if you have a full time wage coming into the house, you’ll have noticed the cost of living a normal, socially-connected, life in the UK is not cheap.

Housing, travel, energy are all expensive.  If you want to get or keep a job, a mobile phone is increasingly necessary.  If the only wage coming into the house is low, or if you are bringing up a family, or if you are unwaged, or on your own with kids, you’re struggling.  The heating will be rationed, Christmas is an annual worry you save for 11 months of the year, holidays are something other families talk about.

Life is miserable for many families, demeaningly so.

I heard a politician last week suggest food banks have burgeoned in recent years due to them being better advertised.  I respectfully disagree.  Food poverty exists across the UK, alongside heating and housing poverty.  People eat toast, a tin of beans or a plate of chips as their main daily meal.  Sometimes this is not even an option.

If you’re on a limited wage or keeping a family together on benefits your money will be gone before the next payment is in the bank, pretty much every week or month.  You put the heating up during the cold spell last month and have now paid the bill.  There’s will be no money for several days and there’s no food in the house.  What do you do?

Fortunately food banks exist, not because they are a well marketed business success story, because hundreds of thousands of people in towns and cities across the country have no food before the next tranche of money arrives.

The Penny Dinners Brother Walfrid provided to kids in the east end of Glasgow, which Celtic were started to fund, resonate today.  This is why today, on the 100th anniversary of Walfrid’s death, you are asked to bring a bag of provisions along to Celtic Park.  That food is your way of paying into the social fund that gave you Celtic.  There is a possibility that collectively, you will achieve something magnificent for some of the poorest families in Scotland.

While you’re in a listening mood, CQN’er Tommy Melly, an integral part of TeamOscar, is running the Great Edinburgh Run on Sunday for Neuroblastoma Children’s Cancer Alliance.  He’s also doing the Glasgow 10k in June and the Great Scottish Run in October, all for NCCA.  You can do your bit in memory of Oscar, and for those kids who fight on, here.

Have a great day at the football, I hear the banners on the stadium at the top of Celtic Way will be worth photographing.

  1. Theoretical communism will never, ever work in practice. It goes directly against human instinct whereby we seek to rise to the top of the group.

If and when we ever get beyond that it, it will probably represent an evolutionary step akin to what Iain M Banks wrote about in his Culture novels. Certainly it will be at some point in the future when there is no real requirement to work for any other reason than enjoyment.

Also, seem to remember no dog/cat food mentioned but I am involved (not directly but in a way ) in a foodbank and they say a lot of these people have cats/dogs so will probably pitch up with some stuff for them.

  12. How long do you think scottish food banks could exist on contributions of a months salary from the top 30 earners at Celtic Park ?????? I bet a lot more than a collection of foodstuffs arranged for a less than than glamarous midweek fixture in April

I am sure that if they invested their money wisely they could probably exist on the remaining 11 months salary

It might even be an idea to contribute the money generated from the sale of your picture with the club mascot to those in more need of it

    Totalitarianism.

That’s why the Commie leaders were all ruthless dictators. They had to subjugate the people through terror.

“So only four Saturday 3pm games all season.

In the original fixture schedule we had 17 weekend and 2 midweek home game fixtures.

Of the 17 weekend games we’ve had:

6 moved for Europa games (Aberdeen on 1st March might have got moved for TV anyway but we knew about Europa game before TV change)

4 moved for TV (including the 2 post split games – although last game of the season is scheduled for the Sunday)

1 game at the start of the season moved because either we were looking to play a glamour friendly that didn’t happen or our ground wasn’t ready due to the CW games

1 game in January moved so we could do a bit of warm weather training

1 game moved due to our participation in the league cup semi final

4 games left at 3pm on a Saturday”

Correct. “Free” is a word used by politicians to con us that they are giving us something for nothing. All “free” stuff is funded from tax. Maybe once they start talking in terms of how they’re spending our money rather than what they are giving away “free” then they will gain some credibility. In the meantime, I’ll ignore their rhetoric.

Even if there wasn’t a Rangers factor our costs have still been rising in the last three years. We’re not a non-profit. Profits are what allow us to replace players that have gone out of contract or been sold at a loss.

At some point a cost increase was inevitable. Even if they’d been consigned to the dustbin of history.

If the club thought the price increase would result in a lower overall revenue they wouldn’t do it. I suspect they’ve included a bit of Ronny factor, and I wouldn’t be surprised if ST numbers go up. I’m buying an additional one this year.

The cost for me to have a ST is lower than it was. It’s an irrefutable fact.

The cost for me to have a ST is higher than it was. It’s an irrefutable fact.

How you choose to view that is up to you. I choose to acknowledge that I’m still paying less than I was 3 years ago. At the time I did not think I should be paying less because Rangers were gone. If you do not think the discount should be reduced just because a Rangers entity is back, you therefore think the discount should not have been given in the first place.

Unless you think the discount was for some other reason and not Rangers related at all.

Alan Mulvanny and Frank Connor are the assistant referees (AR) for the cup semifinal.

Dallas is listed as a AAR. Don’t know if that means he will be there in case one of the above two gets injured and he is in reserve, or if they have those two officials behind the goals and he is one of them.

My guess would be the former , but don’t know.

If I was Hibs or QOS then I would be telling SPFL that I want permission to play at same time as Sevco.

Of course, the problem has arisen because it turns out the league has turned out to be more competitive but not in the way that they thought.
