Tonev and racism in Scottish football

1193

I’m not about to give you a character reference for Aleksandar Tonev, he may be prone to racist outburst, for all I know.  Society, and therefore football, still has a racism problem, just read how coolly Luis Suarez played addressing an opponent as “negro”.  The game has to react firmly when presented with racist banners, which regularly appear in Eastern Europe.

On the balance of probabilities, would a born-and-bred Scottish international be judged to have made a racist remark during a game against an opponent he doesn’t share a common tongue with?

If Kenny Miller was similarly accused and claimed to be misquoted, how would you feel?  Scottish footballers just don’t have a history of this kind of remark; I’d be inclined to believe Miller.  So, I expect, would Scottish football.

Tonev comes from one of those Eastern European countries.  Scottish football acknowledged it had no evidence to act on but found him guilty.

Based in just as little evidence, could you please decide if Scottish football is guilty of racist generalisation in its handling of this matter?  I know you don’t have enough evidence to come to a proper decision, but that’s the point.

Maybe if Aleks was at Ibrox on Tuesday making flute band gestures to TV cameras at halftime, the like of which Scottish Government minster Roseanna Cunningham once insisted was unacceptable and illegal, we’d all realise he didn’t mean any harm.  Or was it just the Sign of the Cross, Ms Cunningham?

But Tonev’s not “one of us”, so who cares?

The auction for two debenture hospitality seats, which started our bid to build a fourth school kitchen in Malawi for Mary’s Meals ended a few minutes ago.  Thanks to everyone who bid, the winner paid £295, a fantastic gesture.  Thanks also to Celtic sponsor, Magners, for pulling things together for us and making it happen.

We have a couple of slightly less-illustrious premium seats for tomorrow in the Jock Stein stand from Magners, which you can win by answering the following question:

Which team do Celtic play tomorrow?

This competition is only open for an hour, closes at 2:0, so those who enter have an excellent chance.  Keep an eye on your inbox this afteroon.  If you’d like to donate £1 to the kitchen fund in tandem with your entry, you can do so here.

Terms and Conditions apply.

You can get copies of Caesar & the Assassin, Billy McNeill and Davie Hay’s accounts of managing Celtic from Jock Stein’s departure until the appointment of Liam Brady, signed by both Billy and Davie here.

It’s a great read, you’ll enjoy it.

Big porcupine in the garden last night . A big boy -maybe 30 kilos.

Brock, my mad mental dachshund ,decided to wind it up. Big boy porcupine responded by forcibly stamping its feet , turning its arse towards Brock and raising its quills. Cue Brock departing the scene in real quick time.

Delaney’s, sorry for not replying sooner. I’ve just checked back.

Player with the attitude Marcus has, are missing from our current squad. We need a few players playing who would go through a brick wall for us and can play a bit.

I’m hoping the cruciate injury Marcus suffered will not hinder his career with us.

Yes I had a laugh at the Daily North Korean this morning, could they be any more anti celtic, lol, and I listened to JIm DialaHUN last night on the Clyde phone in, he must me sitting in there with his black cap on every time someone try’s to put him straight on the Tonev situation, he is just having none of it, no conversation what so ever, mind you the celtic fans who called in where not prepared enough to put up a good point and I’m sure the screeners know that, no disrespect to the tim callers, but they did fall at the first hurdle, DialaHUNt is cleaver in one way, and one way only, he controls the button, so you’ve no chance to be honest.

I read interesting interview with Capello. I think he might be back on route from Russia to Italy. He did not receive wages for five months and the atmosphere around him is heavy there.

As I said I did not talk about you. It was another poster who wrote few posts, searching for sensation with the Poles doing main role.

    On another topic.

I find pathetic those comments where people talk about evidences in Tonev case. As I understand, the SFA made verdict on balance of probability. Word from the English player against word from the Bulgarian player who does not speak English.

Go figure. There is only one evidence. Celtic heard the player and backed his appeal. Why don’t you do the same…Celtic supporters?

  21. For probability in mathematics, see Probability theory.

Probability is the measure of the likeliness that an event will occur.[1]

Probability is used to quantify an attitude of mind towards some proposition of whose truth we are not certain.[2] The proposition of interest is usually of the form “Will a specific event occur?” The attitude of mind is of the form “How certain are we that the event will occur?” The certainty we adopt can be described in terms of a numerical measure and this number, between 0 and 1 (where 0 indicates impossibility and 1 indicates certainty), we call probability.[3] Thus the higher the probability of an event, the more certain we are that the event will occur. A simple example would be the toss of a fair coin. Since the 2 outcomes are deemed equiprobable, the probability of “heads” equals the probability of “tails” and each probability is 1/2 or equivalently a 50% chance of either “heads” or “tails”.

These concepts have been given an axiomatic mathematical formalization in probability theory (see probability axioms), which is used widely in such areas of study as mathematics, statistics, finance, gambling, science (in particular physics), artificial intelligence/machine learning, computer science, and philosophy to, for example, draw inferences about the expected frequency of events. Probability theory is also used to describe the underlying mechanics and regularities of complex systems.[4]
