Tonev and racism in Scottish football

1193

I’m not about to give you a character reference for Aleksandar Tonev, he may be prone to racist outburst, for all I know.  Society, and therefore football, still has a racism problem, just read how coolly Luis Suarez played addressing an opponent as “negro”.  The game has to react firmly when presented with racist banners, which regularly appear in Eastern Europe.

On the balance of probabilities, would a born-and-bred Scottish international be judged to have made a racist remark during a game against an opponent he doesn’t share a common tongue with?

If Kenny Miller was similarly accused and claimed to be misquoted, how would you feel?  Scottish footballers just don’t have a history of this kind of remark; I’d be inclined to believe Miller.  So, I expect, would Scottish football.

Tonev comes from one of those Eastern European countries.  Scottish football acknowledged it had no evidence to act on but found him guilty.

Based in just as little evidence, could you please decide if Scottish football is guilty of racist generalisation in its handling of this matter?  I know you don’t have enough evidence to come to a proper decision, but that’s the point.

Maybe if Aleks was at Ibrox on Tuesday making flute band gestures to TV cameras at halftime, the like of which Scottish Government minster Roseanna Cunningham once insisted was unacceptable and illegal, we’d all realise he didn’t mean any harm.  Or was it just the Sign of the Cross, Ms Cunningham?

But Tonev’s not “one of us”, so who cares?

The auction for two debenture hospitality seats, which started our bid to build a fourth school kitchen in Malawi for Mary’s Meals ended a few minutes ago.  Thanks to everyone who bid, the winner paid £295, a fantastic gesture.  Thanks also to Celtic sponsor, Magners, for pulling things together for us and making it happen.

We have a couple of slightly less-illustrious premium seats for tomorrow in the Jock Stein stand from Magners, which you can win by answering the following question:

Which team do Celtic play tomorrow?

This competition is only open for an hour, closes at 2:0, so those who enter have an excellent chance.  Keep an eye on your inbox this afteroon.  If you’d like to donate £1 to the kitchen fund in tandem with your entry, you can do so here.

Terms and Conditions apply.

You can get copies of Caesar & the Assassin, Billy McNeill and Davie Hay’s accounts of managing Celtic from Jock Stein’s departure until the appointment of Liam Brady, signed by both Billy and Davie here.

It’s a great read, you’ll enjoy it.

One of my oldest mates passed seven years ago. He was a died in the wool Rangers man. Never missed a home game and he was one of the 2000 v Thistle at Ibrox in 79. Ten minutes after the Lisbon game he ran up and congratulated me and was in total praise of Celtic’s performance.

I often think of Michael and what his take would be on his beloved club’s demise. One thing I know for sure he’d have no part in the ‘new club’ lie, just as he’d be slaughtering the likes of Derek Johnstone for peddling rubbish.

They are few and far between but those who do admit the truth are out there.

Too much talk about the draw this evening – I believe we may be getting softened up for the unthinkable – I will not give one penny that will help keep that mob alive – in fact my personal opinion is that no self respecting Celtic fan should

    NatKnow,

When was the post put up? I will have a look.

If it comes across as being a view upheld by Kevj or if he didn’t jump in to clear things up, then I agree with you.

Had I known that the post was still up on the board, and if I knew where to find it, I would have read it first and made up my own mind.

p.s The Ivory Tower CSC was not aimed at you. I didn’t take your posts into consideration when I wrote it.

People will come on here and take pot shots at KevJ without knowing the facts or without reading his post. Also other people will come on here and take pot shots at him whilst holding similar views about woman or disabled people or whoever they want to target. The supporters club is for them NatKnow. Was a few pages back mate – sorry I’m on a phone and it’s difficult to scroll back through. Ivory Tower – no offence taken – was just making a wee joke myself. As you can imagine a PC guy like myself condemns the ivory trade and anything to do with it. I wouldn’t even touch a piano. :-) Racism however is prehistoric attitude that should be challenged….

  8. Findlay knows the game is up. They have lost forever Sevco trading as Rangers. He is setting the agenda for the selling of Third Rangers to the Bears. The one that will pay rent to Ashley.

See your ‘ego massaging’ comment from earlier who was it referring to?

  10. The big lie has continued, because our club and others allowed it too. Make mo mistake they will be back next season. Along with the honest mistakes. Same with the laptop loyal, celtic should have hunted the whole lot of them years ago too, so no use us complaining about them, when the club who are being degraded just accept things. If the lot running our club at the moment had been in office during the flag affair, the tricolour wouldn’t be flying.over celtic park. Farry would have continued in office. This constant rebuke of celtic f c happens because it’s allowed to happen because of the cowards who run our club, this latest chapter is not about tonev, it’s another attack on celtic, and u can take that to the bank.

    Mornin all,

Not been on for a while. Looking forward to going to Paradise this after winning my bhoys. Great weather for the game.

LIKE EC67 n CK I will not be attending any game against Sevco until a full and frank apology appears for all of Scottish football from an acceptable rep of their club.

My thoughts on ticket purchase, cancel my cup ticket scheme and give my money to the Wayside n Mary’s Meals. In the event it’s difficult to cancel , accept I have paid my money to Celtic FC plc and leave my seat empty.

Some years ago at a game against a team formerly known as Rangers I wished they would just disappear, funnily it happened , spooky, do I really have that power !!!

The clubs are betting that loyalty to them will overcome any resistance or resentment regarding the damage that the “rescue” action has done to the game and supporters will turn up regardless that no matter what happens all decisions will favour TRFC if they need them.

The only way to counter that and In amazed at the lack of leadership from SFA or SPFL is to make sure TRFC are run under the same financial constraints as other clubs and do not need “rescuing”.

That puts sectarian leanings back at the top of the reasons for honest mistakes and changes to the referring provision should be part of a reform package for that reason.

Remove the motivation and means to cheat and we could have an honest game again.

Perhaps if there is a movement for New gers a start could be made by admitting RFC DID cheat and that old club should have its trophies withdrawn.

If majority of TRFC fans accept being a new club is in their best interests then the outcry at losing titles etc would be less vocal especially of evidence of cheating was made more available to the public.

If the report in to-day’s Times is the truth and not a Halloween joke (i.e. the deadline for an appeal for Tonev was close of business yesterday) our club should hit the S.F.A. with books from U.E.F.A., F.I.F.A. , A.C.A.S. and any other organisation interested in justice. This is the end!.
