Topping increasingly sounds like Blatter

964

Retiring SPFL chairman Ralf Topping addressed the issue of Rangers EBTs in the light of the recent Supreme Court ruling in an interview today with The Scotsman.  It is clear he is well-briefed on what is ‘in the post’ for the football authorities in Scotland from “fans groups”:

“There are a lot of wealthy people who support football clubs who will fund certain activities around challenges. The authorities just have to accept it and be measured in their response.”

Topping told The Scotsman, their solicitor, “the finest in the land”, made sure they were “ready for any challenges subsequently”.

The SPFL would save themselves and everyone else a lot of time and money if, instead of briefing friendly journalists who would refrain from asking the pertinent questions, they would address the matter in hand.

Why did the SPL (now the SPFL) set the parameters for what became the Lord Nimmo Smith (LNS) Commission to examine from 1998, then, when it became clear Rangers would admit guilt for offenses between 1998 and 2000, change that date to run from 2000?

Why did the SPL not lead evidence to the LNS Commission on the five players Rangers admitted guilt to the First Tier Tribunal, for offenses committed during the period in question (after 2000)?

Why did the SPL not reserve the right to appeal the LNS decision, which was predicated on EBTs being executed legally, pending the HMRS appeal?

Other questions, like who made the above decisions and why, can be addressed later.

If only the SPFL would “be measured in their response”, if only they would respond at all!  There has been no response to these questions, only prevarication, misdirection and evasion.

The more those at the top of Scottish football speak, the more they sound like Sepp Blatter, who for years set inquiries and boasted about his robust legal advice on the running of Fifa.

Frankly, Topping and his cronies are not in Blatter’s league.  They are not career criminals, but their briefing of selected journalists while studiously avoiding the question every fan would like to see answered, increasingly looks like a cover-up.

Celtic’s call for action will be ignored by the SPFL and SFA, but that must not be the end of it.  Just do the right thing, Ralph; answer the questions.

I think Rosenborg would give us a much tougher game than anything we face in Scotland. Still fancy us to get past them though. Of course it could be Dundalk……

Mr Mole has informed SA Quick News that negotiations between Stuart Armstrong’s agent and PL have reached an impasse.

The parties met at Toad Hall over the weekend to finalize terms and conditions.

The stumbling block concerns imaging rights, in particular Armstrong’s upcoming endorsement of John Frieda shampoos.

Celtic have a long standing agreement with Head and Shoulders and the board feel that this best reflects the image of Celtic standing head and shoulders above the SPFL.

Stuart’s agent disagrees as his client associates Head and Shoulders with dandruff and doesn’t want Stuart’s image to be tarred.

Both parties have agreed to mediation and have agreed to appoint Georgios Samaras as mediator.

Must be disappointing for MSM. …. When things were going well for Celtic previously we were still really needing to accept any decent offer on players. This allowed certain journos to float stories proportions interest in our better players to create a sense of destabilisation….

I see the Arsenal/ Liverpool/ any big team want Dembele getting rolled out over and over again. …but no sense of destabilising as Dembele, Tierney, Armstrong etc, while they all have a price ( who doesn’t?)… Acceptance of that price will be on Celtic’s terms.

Kind of undermines the ploy of the Scottish rags

  12. This sounds slightly odd, if you are thick that is.

We’ve been told that there are 1500 tickets sold to the ‘away’ fans for Wednesday. Linfield have now announced that the THREE buses carrying fans across the ferry/Cairnryan route will be heavily stewarded to ensure good behaviour.

1500 minus 3 bus loads = ????? Answer? A shed load of ‘local’ Linfield fans who are already honing up their plumbing skills!

Linfield? A pencil up each nostril underpants on the head and saying “Wibble” or in their case “Wabble”.

  14. BRT&H @ 9:06 AM,

Hope your having a fine day in Amsterdam…

Thanks for the clarification, coming from a layman’s point of view ghuys like yourself and Auldheid are invaluable in cutting through the BS.

    I’ve got a general question for you…

When I was looking at the LNS Commission and surrounding events there was for me, a real lack of “joined up thinking”.

Now (if we are talking about the same thing) you phrase this as “flawed logic”… leading to “legal nonsense”.

An example of what I mean, LNS Commission find a breach of the rules over the non-disclosure. They decide a sanction is in order, they decide as this did not afford a Sporting Advantage that this was an issue for the Company and not the Football Club, so they fine Oldco.

The SPL take the view that as Oldco is in liquidation and that the fine is a Footballing debt that Newco should pay.

Now you may say either or both decisions were wrong but there is a certain point to both outcomes.

But when you see it in the round the thing looks like absolute nonsense…

My question – does these events point to a lack of jurisprudence? Or would I be phrasing it wrongly.

  15. Morning peeps

A good piece in the Herald by Tam Mcmanus (ex Hibs player) absolving Leigh Griffiths of any blame for the objects being thrown at him whilst attempting to take a corner kick

The 5-1 gesture should in no way be used against him for causing the violent reaction from a section of the Linfield fans.

Totally agree with his views on this ….although he does go onto say that he should not be tying Celtic scarfs to goalposts at away grounds …..anybody else read this .

  16. Big Jimmy Re fire stick – I am advised that having a “loaded” fire stick is not in itself illegal, there are allegedly people who do this or so I have been told ;) Hope this helps

If this indeed was a reference to Celtic gubbing the Dead club last season, what has that to do with linfield ?

If linfield and the died club are on e and the same, why don’t linfield assist in paying any monies due to creditors by the died club ?

I know this will not be a (infrequent )post that will be well received but I would like to put on record my thanks to Linfield football club.

Quite a large group of us were at Windsor Park on Friday. We were in hospitality (operation Trojan Horse). After a while we declared ourselves and asked for political asylum in the Celtic end though I suspect they knew we were all Tims all along.

At all times we were treated with respect by stewards and officials ,all who were very helpful and courteous and ensured our safe passage to the Celtic end.

Their attitude was in stark contrast to the followers of the club, truly incredible shower stuck in the by gone days of yore
